Voting Question: Seen UK top 5 broadband rip-offs? & how best to deal with 'em? What do you think is the best deal? How 2 beat?

I put this in Politics as Govt promise to roll out superfast broadband Is there a corrupt angle? UK's top broadband rip-offs, together with a few ideas on how you can combat them. 1) Super-fast broadband You might think super-fast broadband sounds amazing. Lightning-fast deals via next-generation fibre technology allow you to surf the net at more than 5 times the usual speed (50Mb). Unfortunately, however, super-fast broadband generally comes with a much higher price tag than packages with standard connection speeds. And I think, at £40 a month, providers are ripping us off - especially when you take into account a 8Mb package with a 10GB usage limit can cost less than £6 a month. The fact is, unless you need faster speeds for things like watching internet TV or downloading HD movies regularly, these packages probably have far greater capability than you really need. If you're not a heavy user, paying the higher monthly cost is a waste of money, frankly. 2) Restrictions on download limits Many broadband providers boast of unlimited download limits, only to accompany these bold statements with a little asterisk which, on closer inspection directs you to a fair use policy that restricts the amount you can actually download. Fair use policies are often a get out of jail free card for providers which advertise unlimited download limits, only to impose penalties or other restrictions if you exceed a certain threshold. And, to make things even more complicated, finding out about your own download habits can sometimes feel like trying to break into Fort Knox. For example, when I called my own provider to ask them about my usage, I was only told that I ‘need not worry'. This ambiguous phrasing may make little difference in my case, but in some circumstances you'll only realise you've exceeded your fair usage limit when you get a warning from your provider – or worse, when a hefty bill lands on your doormat. If you want to gauge your surfing habits, this data usage calculator from Virgin is a nifty tool which will give you an idea of your own monthly usage, which you can then use to get the best plan for you. Alternatively, providers Be and O2 offer super-fast broadband with truly unlimited download limits. 3) Broadband without a landline. If you move into a property without a BT landline in place, it will cost you £124.99 to connect yourself to the outside world, plus £10.50 a month in line rental, unless you commit to an 18-month contract. If you don't fancy forking out all this just to get connected, one alternative is Virgin media which, providing you live in a cabled area, will connect you without the need for a BT line (£30 connection fee applies). In addition, some providers such as Tiscali make use of local loop unbundling (LLU) to bypass BT and offer inclusive line rental. LLU enables ‘local loops' (or put simply, the cable through which you receive your broadband) to be freed up so other providers can design their own broadband packages to provide alternative, and often cheaper services. The third way you can get connected to the internet without the need for a BT landline is via a dongle . Dongles provide a convenient way of getting online, though from experience provide much slower download speeds than conventional broadband. Check out my latest article on dongles . 4) Tag on the line This is one of the sneakiest ways broadband providers can stop you from switching easily. They put what's known as a 'tag' on your line, which is difficult to remove. When you run into trouble, they often point the finger at your landline provider, who then points the finger back at the broadband provider, and so on. What many people don't realise is that you have to talk to the provider you want to switch to and ask them to remove it. Luckily, Broadband Choices offers a handy list of numbers on its website to contact with regards to having a tag on your line. 5) Long contract terms Last but not least, contract lengths for broadband, and indeed your mobile phone are slowly creeping up, and these days you'll often have to sign an 18 and sometimes a 24 month contract in order to secure the best deals. However, there is light at the end of the broadband tunnel, and if you don't want to be tied into a lengthy contract, you could always opt for a provider which doesn't impose one. For example, you can now get one-month only contracts from providers like Plusnet and Zen, which enable you to switch at any time. Obviously, your broadband service is unlikely to be 100% perfect, 100% of the time, but hopefully these small tips will help you on your way to a smoother surfing experience. Voting Question: Can anyone recommend the best free dating site other than Gumtree for a specific type of unusual request ?

I'm a 37 year old male in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Two weeks ago I went to a swinging club, Chameleons in Darlaston ( search for it on Google if you want to know more), down in the Midlands just outside Birmingham, as a purely one off with a married female friend. I wasn't an active participant this first time, but found it fascinating ( believe me, if you've never been then go, just for the surreal experience of it all !). I don't want to go on the nights when they allow single males in and would like to hook up with a female to go along again on the Saturday couples-only nights, maybe every five or six weeks. With a view to this, I was intending to perhaps advertise online accordingly. I tried Gumtree, but have found it full to the brim of complete timewasters and can't seem to get beyond idiots wanting to have me call premium rate phone numbers or buy dodgy videos. Any thoughts ? Is there a good inexpensive medium for advertising in this way that basically screens out the timewasters before adverts are placed and replies sent, leaving me with a core of sensible people who are actually for real ? I'd be very grateful for your input. more

Using a web designer can be expensive, but they have a better knowledge of what works on the web and build a more effective and more safety websites using the latest techniques. A website can break down geographical barriers and create new ways of communication. The Internet gives smaller businesses a relatively low cost strategy for competing on the same online terms as much larger competitors. Resolved Question: I'm 16 and planning on starting my own business. Advice needed?

Hey everyone. I'm currently 16 and when i am older i want to run my own business. So recently i decided i might as well start now! Only a small thing though. Just to try and make some more money to put towards university or something i may need. I have Taken Media, ICT, Maths and Business studies. And i have the attitude needed to keep a business open. Although, because i am only young and still in school 4 days a week i was planning on starting small working on Ebay and Amazon. (All done with help of family members) Heres my idea. Due to the increase in size of people. Generally i mean. People need bigger clothes. And some people find it difficult to afford large clothes (XL+) As they are usually expensive. Which is where i see a gap in the market and would like to buy clothes (Males shirts XL up. Trousers 34" up) and then resale using online techniques. Like Ebay... So i need you, to give me links, names and just any company (Based in england) So that i can buy large clothes and sell. So someplace like a warehouse or holesaler. The whole idea of merchenting comes into to play here. This is simply to make a small business on Ebay (selling items) and my own website (As i can make the website myself and also advertise.) Which who knows. In the future my idea may become very successfull. You may find it hard to beleive i am 16 :) I currently have 1300pounds to work with. I been saving up. To summerise.... I need warehouses or holesalers who will sell clothes cheap, so i can resale them on the internet. So if you know of any then please. Do tell me. Any of the popular supliers who make clothe, if you just so happen to have the website for where i can buy large items of clothing for resale.. (E.g Denim jeans, Easy clothing. Ect Ect.) If anymore information is needed feel free to ask and i shall give you it in as much detail as i can. I'm mainly looking for advice. Where i can buy clothes. Where to start ect ect. Thanks for reading and no silly comments please. I am quite serious about my idea and i hope it will be a big success. Many thanks to people who reply. more

Resolved Question: Unsold ad inventory - what gives?

Whats the deal with online remnant advertising and last-minute ad discounts? (Remnant advertising is the term used for ad space that didn't sell at the regular price. It can usually be sold for a significant discount to smaller advertisers who can afford it. ) Will it ever be made freely available to buyers online in the future? I've been personally invetigating the issue but the only info Ive been able to find thus far about online remnant advertising is a blog - www.lastminuteadclub.org and some articles here and there. Are there are any sites out there that offer this? What exactly happens to this remnant inventory? Any ideas?? I'm interested in learning about remnant inventory and potential last-minute discount sales across all media, radio, TV, print, you name it! more
