Resolved Question: How do I write an honest resumé that actually sounds good and convincing?

I'm 25 years old, in my third year of college (graduating next year), and am looking for a job in a PR/advertising media consultancy as a copywriter, account executive, and market researcher. This is my fifth attempt at college and I'm doing well this time at 3.61 GPA score, but I barely have any proper work experience. I normally only include three of my studies in my resume: Performing Arts Communication (current), Communication Management & Advertising Design (2004-2005) and Marketing/Management (2002). The ones I left out were European Studies (2003, strange situation) and Philosophy (2006, didn't seriously want it, and have administrative problems so the school probably won't release my transcript anyway). However, I did learn from each and every one of my studies, no matter how bad I did. I've been trying to avoid discussions about my past in job interviews, but when my interviewer sees that I have so many studies under my wing, it just seems that they couldn't help but ask. The reason why I failed four times in college before was NOT because I was dumb or had a lousy work ethic. I left my first college because the circumstances there didn't enable me to pursue my life goals, and as soon as I arrived at my second college I made the innocent mistake of hanging with the wrong crowd, thus costing me the next three studies. If it weren't for the misfortune that was beyond my control, I really did study hard and would have succeeded in my earlier attempts for college. I hate this bit right here, because it makes me sound as though I wasn't responsible; whereas in reality I worked really hard to learn from my mistakes and press on to my goals despite the delay. I did work between ages 19-24, but not the kind that my prospective employers would want to hear. Very briefly in an apparel retailer (age 19). I did 2 years of multilevel marketing (ages 19-21) because it was the only place I felt safe and accepted during the period that I was trying to get out of a devastatingly abusive relationship a continent away from my family home. I took various freelance translating and interpreting jobs between the ages 19-24, which I can do very well across three languages, but I have never been able to repeat business as regular as I had wished. When I was 23, at the pressure of some friends, I attempted to start my own business: a performing arts event organizer and training center. However, since last year this organization went into hiatus in order to first properly learn about the trade, gain resources, and get connected to the right people. I haven't worked since because my studies started demanding the better of my time. Writing resumés makes me nervous because my history really hasn't been filled with a lot of success, and I guess the only good thing I have left to offer is hope and positive self-belief (despite the fact that I haven't been able to prove anything over the past couple of years). I really think I'm not a bad person or a loser, I just had been unlucky. But other than that, I'm really good at writing, speaking, making people buy into my ideas, researching, foreign languages, and helping others fulfill greater potential by gaining self-awareness. Based on these facts, I really do believe that I deserve a career and that there are jobs I can be successful in out there. Having said that, which studies and work experiences do I put in my CV, and which ones do I leave out? Since the problem had nothing to do with the professional, how do I answer to my interviewer when asked why I couldn't seem to commit to anything long term, without revealing any personal problems I went through? Interviewers have told me that although I know what I want, I don't have what it takes to achieve them; how do I prove them wrong? How can I make my resumé and interview get me the job I want?I'm also stuck when I'm obligated to state how much I made in the jobs. I was paid commissions in MLM, so it was irregular, and I didn't make much. I tend to disguise this job as "account executive for FMCG distribution company". What I made on translation also depended on the length and difficulty of the job; I never really depended on the money I made from it to live on month to month. What do I write in the CV and what do I tell my interviewer without exposing myself, and how do I make sure that my answers lead to a fair negotiation? more

Voting Question: Climbing the corporate ladder, how hard is it really?

I want to study Marketing in College but I often dream big, it's something I've done my whole life. I put goals ahead of me and do everything possible to attain them. So, it got me wondering how far could I really get in the Business world? How hard is it? Don't just say very hard, I'm aware of that. Also, I just want to point out, I'm not talking about reaching a CEO position, that's something I honestly don't want. That would require me to be a complete workaholic and I'd like to have a life, thank you. But growing up in a family where the resources were close to nothing, I've always dreamed of not only living comfortable but being able to spend a little money on things I want. So, I guess the correct question would be, how hard is it to get to a point where I'm earning GOOD money? (I don't wanna say where I'm rich...it sounds so superficial) What sort of effort and time and education would it require to get to six figures? Also, this is off-topic but I've always wanted to be able to do marketing for anything media related (Specially Fashion, TV, Advertising, Video Games). That way I believe in what I'm selling and I'll do a good job, is it easy to get a job in one of those? Or are you even able to choose what sort of business you'll be working for? Thank you if you read and thank you if you choose to answer something worth my time ;) Have a good day! more

Resolved Question: Amendment to limit corporate political speech?

How would you word an amendment to prevent corporations from using advertising and front organizations from influencing politics without limiting the free speech of media and other public interest entities? (This is only about "corporate speech" not about contributions which is another topic.) The reason for this is that money available to corporations is limitless compared to that of public service organizations and individuals. Thus corporations can inundate the voter with their point of view to affect legislation and elections. Few voters have the resources to investigate their claims and even less have the desire to. Thus, the one with the loudest megaphone gets the message across. My example: No entity deriving funding for the sale of a product or service, sale or exchange of stock may engage in activities that support or oppose: a candidate, office holder, political party or current legislation.Sure, we could add unions but how would this be worded so as not to conflict with the first amendment. However, I present the comparison of unions to corporations in that unions get 100% of their funding from it's members who from a labor/business point of view are more homogenous then the stock holders of a corporations. The buy of congress is not new, in fact a book about it was written in 1998 and the problem is just getting worse. The latest supreme court decision is just one more nail in the coffin of democracy. more

Resolved Question: Would you help me to correct my ENGLISH essay?

Would you help me to correct my ENGLISH essay in the respects of grammar, the accuracy of vocabulary, coherence, logistic and so on? The topic is: The media, especially advertisements, show too much information about snacks and toys to children and should be banned. What do you think of this view? You should finish the essay within 45 minutes and no less than 250 words. My essay is: As the widespread of advertisements for snacks and toys, children in current society are unavoidably affected by the over-loaded information showed by TV or other types of media towards children. However, in terms of banning the advertising of children’s products, it would be kind of unreasonable. Advertisements can afford parents an approach to acquire sufficient information about new types of snacks and toys. In contemporary society, thanks to the development of science and technology, there are a vast number of innovations in the filed of children’s goods, which can promote snacks being attractive combined with nutritious, and make for toys being aids to tap offspring’s intellectual resources. Viewing this situation, broadcasting of these products via TV, the Internet advertising or posters, could be the most effective way to help parents learn and understand those new kinds of commodity. From this respect, advertising of snacks and toys is justified. Furthermore, advertisements can bring about benefits not only to customers but also to manufacturers. It is a universal that the greater publicity, the higher sales. Better yet, apparently, if producers make significant profits, huge funding support would be allocated in the investigation of new skills which could contribute to enhance the level of security, function and quality of snacks and toys. This could eventually lead to a win-win status for both parents and sellers. Admittedly, it is the truth that the prevalent advertisements may mislead the youths to over-consume, because youngsters usually lack the capacity of controlling their consuming desire. On the other hand, fortunately, common situation is guardians, rather than adolescents themselves, could make the decision whether or when a product should be purchased. So, forbidding publicizing children’s goods for this reason is pointless. In conclusion, although there are some drawbacks brought by advertising snacks and toys, in view of the remarkable advantages of it, banning to show advertisements via media would be the last measurements adopted by authorities. more

Local managers' pay includes a salary and a large bonus, 50 % of which is based on the office's current profitability, and the other 50 % based on overall company profitability. The Quality Inn chain has just approached the Kumamoto office with a request for a bid on an advertising contract estimated to require over 6,000 hours per year for 3 years. Quality has made it clear that the billing rate for the winning bid will not exceed $120 per hour, although the industry standard for this type of contract is $140 per hour. The bidding is expected to be intense with at least six other agencies willing to prepare bids. Nathan estimates the minimum cost of a credible bid will be $200,000. Moreover, given the current heavy workload, Nathan will have difficulty finding individuals with time to prepare the bid. As the Vice President in charge of the Kumamoto office, Nathan is reluctant to attempt the bid. ______________________________________... The combined companies will focus on providing a better, more comprehensive experience for users interested in downloading, watching and sharing content, and will offer new opportunities for professional content owners to distribute their work to reach a vast new audience. “The The Pirate Bay team has built an exciting and powerful media platform that complements Warner Bros’s mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” said Jim Kjeyzer, Chief Executive Officer of Warner Bros. “Our companies share similar values; we both always put our users first and are committed to innovating to improve their experience. Together, we are natural partners to offer a compelling media entertainment service to users, content owners and advertisers.” “Our community has played a vital role in changing the way that people consume media, creating a new hip culture. By joining forces with Warner Bros, we can benefit from its global reach and technology leadership to deliver a more comprehensive entertainment experience for our users and to create new opportunities for our partners,” said Anakata, CEO and Co-Founder of The Pirate Bay. “I’m confident that with this partnership we’ll have the flexibility and resources needed to pursue our goal of building the next-generation platform for serving media worldwide.” When the acquisition is complete, The Pirate Bay will retain its distinct brand identity, strengthening and complementing Warner Bros’s own fast-growing video business. The Pirate Bay will continue to be based in Stockholm, Sweden, and all The Pirate Bay employees will remain with the company. With Warner Bros’s technology, advertiser relationships and global reach, The Pirate Bay will continue to build on its success as one of the world’s most popular services for online entertainment. Both companies have approved the transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2009. Resolved Question: Does your state have any good adoption related statutes?

For reform efforts, it's always good to be able to present existing legislation to be used as a model. My state has two specific statutes I think are pretty good compared to other states, though we need much more work done in this area. Any of you reformers have decent laws on your books we can use when lobbying our state legislators about adoption ethics and issues? Here's mine Code of Alabama :Section 26-10A-36 It shall be unlawful for any person or persons, organizations, corporation, partnership, hospital, association, or any agency to advertise verbally, through print, electronic media, or otherwise that they will: (1) Adopt children or assist in the adoption of children in violation of this chapter; In other states I have seen adoption agency billboards and TV commercials as well as classified ads from couples looking to adopt. That's all illegal here. Section 26-10A-31 gives access to limited adoption records (g) Notwithstanding subsection (f) of this section, the State Department of Human Resources or the licensed investigating agency appointed by the court pursuant to Section 26-10A-19(b) and (c), shall furnish, upon request, to the petitioners, natural parents or an adoptee 19 years of age or older, nonidentifying information which shall be limited to the following: (1) Health and medical histories of the adoptee's natural parents; (2) The health and medical history of the adoptee; (3) The adoptee's general family background, including ancestral information, without name references or geographical designations; (4) Physical descriptions; (5) The length of time the adoptee was in the care and custody of one other than the petitioner; and (6) Circumstances under which the child comes to be placed for adoption. (h) Notwithstanding subsection (f), if either the natural mother or the natural or presumed father have given consent in writing under oath to disclosure of identifying information as defined in subsection (d) and which is not otherwise provided in this section and in subsection (c) of Section 22-9A-12, the State Department of Human Resources or a licensed child placing agency shall release such identifying information.Great Andraya! What state is that so I can view their statutes? I am trying to help DS's first mom in her efforts in her state (my son's state of birth with totally closed records :( luckily she kept everything for him, even his OBC) as well as working in my state more

Resolved Question: Does the fact that McCain more more money for political ads in the final two weeks concern Obama fans?

Obama had nearly $66 million in the bank at the end of the two week period and debts of about $2.3 million. The Democratic National Committee and the joint victory fund reported combined cash on hand of $31 million. McCain and the Republican National Committee reported having a combined $84 million as of last week to spend before Election Day. The reports illustrated Obama's superior financial position going into October. He spent more than $80 million on media advertising. McCain, using his resources and the Republican National Committee's, spent a combined $38 million on ads. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081024/ap_on_el_pr/campaign_money more

Resolved Question: Any hospital based community nurses out there? ?

I find it annoying that there is such a push to get people out of hospital beds. There are constantly reports in the media about overcrowding in hospitals, and how the govt has decided to increase hospital beds, do more elective surgery, streamline emergency waiting times, etc. But they never seem to mention the pressure that doctors are under to get people in and out of hospital beds. I'm not sure how these measures will work without the resources to support them anyway. There is a huge lack of nursing staff and allied health professionals in our public hospitals, sometimes advertised positions do not get any applicants at all! I have pleaded with doctors to keep some patients in hospital for a little longer as they're unsafe for discharge - I don't ask for this lightly either. I've documented it in hospital chart in capital letters with underlining. But I am often fighting a losing battle, as the penalties that the individual medical teams and the hospital suffer if they don't reach a pre-decided average length of stay timeframe for each patient, is too powerful an incentive to compete with. I know we can't keep people in hospital forever, and that there are sick people waiting in the wings for that hospital bed, but we need to keep the vulnerable people safe and that involves appropriate discharge plans. One patient was recently discharge even though the physio, OT and myself deemed him unsafe for discharge. He was home less than two hours before he returned with a broken hip after having a fall. My job involves assessment of the elderly hospital patient and providing support services for them after discharge. But community services are struggling to cope with the demand and often have huge waiting times. Community packages at the higher level are always full, and they also have huge waiting lists, meaning that sometimes people need to go to nursing homes instead of being supported at home, which is often not what they or the supporting family want to happen. Some people just fall through the cracks in the system because they don't fit certain criteria - too young, no carer, not receiving a government pension, etc.. I am really frustrated with the system, and have already complained to any that will listen. I have even spoken directly with the Prime Minister about some of my concerns. Nothing seems to be improving. Does anyone else share my irritation? I try really hard to do a good job for my patients, but the system lets me (and them) down. more

Resolved Question: What has happened to the UK??

Not advocating such behaviour, but in the UK U can now get 14 yrs imprisonment 4 murder if U kill someone while being on the phone while driving. On that logic, if I was a teenager, carrying a knife & hightened the risk of stabbing someone that would make me a motorist? Truly what is the actual (%) of such cases? (taking nothing away of the tradegy that has happened for a select few.) But why is the UK in such a mess? The majority of people here are educated, why does Authority treat 'THE PEOPLE' like uneducated peasants from the 1940's who were made foul 2 the evils of the NAZI regieme. All these such BILLS show is a crumbling system, that is quite obviously losing a war, fuelled by a uncontrollable media. Advertising they truly are losing the war due 2 ridicolus shock tactics that obviously do not have the resources 2 manage. What actually R these deeper ills that is supposedly seen as wrong with the social make up of general soceity the UK Authorities R lead to believe are there? more

The question about why an assistant's position: I was an editor for 18 months and had to resign from the position. Office politics broke out between two sides and I got caught in the middle. It made things unbearable for me. I guess if there were a better position, I'd apply for it, but part of me just wants to be someone else's helper - I'd rather be told what to do. I was making 40k and it didn't equate with the annoyance I had to put up with it. more

Resolved Question: How do I start a 527 organization?

I created http://www.blockbarack.com about 2 months ago and I'm looking into forming a 527/non-profit organization. Currently we have about 5,000 active members in the organization from all 50 states and 38 countries. Considering about 85% of our members are college students we are low on funds. We have put most of our resources into online advertising and ad campaigns. So if anyone who shares our beliefs are welcomed to join our organization. Any donations will be greatly appreciated, and can be made on the site via paypal. The facts will prevent Obama from becoming President, but seems that the majority of the media completely ignore them. Exposing the truth is sometimes unpopular but a necessity. more

Resolved Question: How do you feel about being part of a system that enslaves 3rd world countries?

We feed the system we work for the system. Corporate Greed has gone so far that it either ownes the media such as General Electric or AOL Time Warner, or it has subsiduary companies which advertise on a network which allows it to manipulate and control bad press against their company. Corporations seek the lowest wages and the cheapest resources...many of these resources are obtained through harsh economic tactics that put a country into massive dept. I could go on and on...it comes down to us the consumers, if we consume the system works, if we don't consume the system fails....but that is pretty much impossible.Confessions of an Economic Hit Man is a great book and I recommend anybody who is interested in international affairs to read this. more

Resolved Question: Has anyone else noticed this?

Recent music is designed for one thing-to make money. It's driven by the media, and consumed by the undiscerning masses, just because it's "cool." The "artists" today have very minimal talent, and most will not last more than two or three years. Nobody will be listening to them twenty years from now. The "music" they create involves millions of dollars on production, distribution, advertising, etc. The true greats had extremely limited resources fifty years ago, yet they are still listened to. Personally, I cannot envision Justin Timberlake or 50 Cent performing when they're well over 50 years old. more

Resolved Question: about Dietstudy.com and the one day diet. how do i go about getting media attention and spreading the word?

i personally have a copy of the offer contract in my posession. assuming that i scan it in and upload it, what's the best way to spread the word about what specifically the contract says ? i am not slandering these people but i AM passing along information as a neutral party and informational resource. about dietstudy.com: these are the people that are "performing a diet study" and will pay all of the paritcapants $1000 to at the end of the study. some people have already invested anywhere from $150-$300 in this and i think they should know what the contract says and what they are paying or about to pay money for. they advertise all over radio. i put a similar question up about this in law, and (in diet and fitness) because i do not want negative legal action filed against me. i am just a messenger. but tell me guys, how am i going to get it out there? what's the best way? i want the media to hear me and listen to me. i want the people to hear me. where do i start? what should i do? more
