Resolved Question: What makes an organization part of the "mainstream media"?

Some people refer to the 'main stream media' assuming I know what the heck that means. I don't. So, let's say I had a TV channel, at which point would I be mainstream: *Ratings- When I had the highest or high enough ratings. But then I hear Fox gets the highest ratings, so does that make them the main stream media. *Sponsorship- I mean, if Goldline is my advertiser does that make me out of the mainstream. If McDonald's advertises on my station does that make me mainstream? *Approach- Main stream media reports news, while non-mainstream do editorializing. Is that legit? or what? I don't really know how to tell the mainstream media from the un-mainstream media. Can someone help me with a criteria that can help me tell if someone is mainstream or not?Yeah, but how do I know one when I see it ya'll: say I was an alien with no knowledge of American or world politics and just started watching TV channels, what means could I use to tell which was mainstream and which wasn't? more

Voting Question: Does anyone know who puts the advertising leaflets along with the monthly credit card statements we receive?

From time to time, in our monthly statement envelopes we receive from our credit cards or from mortgage companies, there is a small double sided advertising leaflet size: 6”3/4 and 3”1/2. For example, last month I received in my mortgage statement, a leaflet that was selling me labels that I could personalize for envelopes. I am working for a small non-profit organization and we would want to use the media to bring awareness about our non-profit organization. We have contacted several credit card companies and the people we got on the phone have no clue about who puts the leaflets in the envelopes that are sent out. It could be that there is an outside company that is outsourcing the entire mailing process and they would also be the ones who include the advertisement. If you would know how the process works or if you work with that kind of business, please let us know who to contact for sending out this kind of leaflets for the non profit organization. Resolved Question: Should I leave restaurant review if it's going to be bad?

I ordered delivery from a Greek restaurant. The omlette did not come with the canteloupe and melons as advertised on their menu. The "puff" pastry was 80% raw as if it was in the oven for only a few minutes, the outside was a little brown but the rest was raw dough. I paid $2 extra for a 3 egg omlette vs. 2 but I can almost swear it is only 2 eggs. I ordered a medium size salad but it looks like a small side salad. A negative review online can have a bad effect - is it better to just keep it to myself and not post the review? more

Voting Question: Is my speech good enough?

The Media and our Body Images of female bodies that have the 'perfect' figure are all over the world. Women-and their body parts- sell all from foods to cars. Young women are being brainwashed into thinking that the ideal shape means to be skinny, tall, furthermore, being flawless, also known as perfect. ** thesis goes here** It's not just development that affects self-esteem. Many other factors (like media images of skinny girls) can affect a person's body image too. Seeing these images over and over may lead women to think that their own bodies are not acceptable, leading them to develop unhealthy body images. And unfortunately, such negative feelings can sap self-esteem and set the stage for eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. Many women will strive for that 'perfect' frame no matter what they have to do. All the negative influence that the media is portraying as the 'perfect' body are causing more problems then solving them. People are beginning to go to great length just to stay thin, and flawless. An American research group of eating disorder, says, that one out of every four college-aged women uses unhealthy methods of weight control—including fasting, skipping meals, extreme exercise, abuse, and self-induced vomiting. Young girls, too, are being affected to stay thin. But we can stop this! One of the ways we can protect our self-esteem and body image from the media's definitions of beauty and acceptability is to become a critical viewer of the media that we are bombarded with each day. The media's news about body shape and size will affect the way we feel about our bodies and ourselves only if we let them. So, be aware of the 'flawless' images, the stereotypes based more on looks than on talents. The put-downs of people who don't fit the narrow definition of ideal. When we effectively recognize and analyze the media's messages that influence us, remember that the media's definitions of beauty and success does not define our self-image or potential. Overall, though its sad to say, media has completely took over our lifestyle. Although, it can be changed, it all depends how we feel about ourself. No one should want to change who they are because the media makes women feel like we have to 'look a certain way' or 'be a certain way'. The media is just words and pictures designed to advertise products and endorse. The harmful messages they send shouldn't be listened too! __________________________ If my speech needs correction or fixing, please fill free to do it. For my intro. im having problem on my thesis. Can you guys help me think of a thesis statement? more

Resolved Question: Am I not supposed to like Special K cereal? Is it supposed to be a female-only cereal?

Ever since I was about 12 years back in the early 1990s, all I can remember with these Special K commercials is them showing women, yes, even back then when their slogan was "Keep the Muscle, Lose the Fat". But I don't ever recall a single male in any of those commercials. And besides, if men have higher cholesterol, have more heart attacks, AND generally don't live as long as women on an average, then shouldn't these commercials be showing men in them as well as women as well as have more attention for mens' heart and cholesterol than women's because of they get more heart attacks on an average? If you say it's because women do more of the shopping, then why aren't stores banning men from shopping? Whenever I go in there and shop by myself, am I supposed to be an extreme minority? Shouldn't they be banning ALL men and hire women to do all the shopping, even for men who aren't married if the media is going to be THIS sexist? I am also offended that they never show men in any yogurt, toothpaste, mouthwash, and chocolate commercials. I think it's too sexist. If you were in charge of media advertising, would you feature men in those commercials as well? And would you make sure they don't look stupid like the way women normally don't look stupid in commercials? Honestly, unless it changes, I think men are going to get more and more offended and notice what I've noticed and start REFUSING to defend this nation because of it."Tessa", How does showing men in commercials hurt their ability to advertise and make sales? What's wrong with it???"Ocelot", I see what you're saying in your first paragraph. I didn't look at it from that particular angle before, but you're right. Now that I see from your angle, it makes a lot of sense. more

Voting Question: Seen UK top 5 broadband rip-offs? & how best to deal with 'em? What do you think is the best deal? How 2 beat?

I put this in Politics as Govt promise to roll out superfast broadband Is there a corrupt angle? UK's top broadband rip-offs, together with a few ideas on how you can combat them. 1) Super-fast broadband You might think super-fast broadband sounds amazing. Lightning-fast deals via next-generation fibre technology allow you to surf the net at more than 5 times the usual speed (50Mb). Unfortunately, however, super-fast broadband generally comes with a much higher price tag than packages with standard connection speeds. And I think, at £40 a month, providers are ripping us off - especially when you take into account a 8Mb package with a 10GB usage limit can cost less than £6 a month. The fact is, unless you need faster speeds for things like watching internet TV or downloading HD movies regularly, these packages probably have far greater capability than you really need. If you're not a heavy user, paying the higher monthly cost is a waste of money, frankly. 2) Restrictions on download limits Many broadband providers boast of unlimited download limits, only to accompany these bold statements with a little asterisk which, on closer inspection directs you to a fair use policy that restricts the amount you can actually download. Fair use policies are often a get out of jail free card for providers which advertise unlimited download limits, only to impose penalties or other restrictions if you exceed a certain threshold. And, to make things even more complicated, finding out about your own download habits can sometimes feel like trying to break into Fort Knox. For example, when I called my own provider to ask them about my usage, I was only told that I ‘need not worry'. This ambiguous phrasing may make little difference in my case, but in some circumstances you'll only realise you've exceeded your fair usage limit when you get a warning from your provider – or worse, when a hefty bill lands on your doormat. If you want to gauge your surfing habits, this data usage calculator from Virgin is a nifty tool which will give you an idea of your own monthly usage, which you can then use to get the best plan for you. Alternatively, providers Be and O2 offer super-fast broadband with truly unlimited download limits. 3) Broadband without a landline. If you move into a property without a BT landline in place, it will cost you £124.99 to connect yourself to the outside world, plus £10.50 a month in line rental, unless you commit to an 18-month contract. If you don't fancy forking out all this just to get connected, one alternative is Virgin media which, providing you live in a cabled area, will connect you without the need for a BT line (£30 connection fee applies). In addition, some providers such as Tiscali make use of local loop unbundling (LLU) to bypass BT and offer inclusive line rental. LLU enables ‘local loops' (or put simply, the cable through which you receive your broadband) to be freed up so other providers can design their own broadband packages to provide alternative, and often cheaper services. The third way you can get connected to the internet without the need for a BT landline is via a dongle . Dongles provide a convenient way of getting online, though from experience provide much slower download speeds than conventional broadband. Check out my latest article on dongles . 4) Tag on the line This is one of the sneakiest ways broadband providers can stop you from switching easily. They put what's known as a 'tag' on your line, which is difficult to remove. When you run into trouble, they often point the finger at your landline provider, who then points the finger back at the broadband provider, and so on. What many people don't realise is that you have to talk to the provider you want to switch to and ask them to remove it. Luckily, Broadband Choices offers a handy list of numbers on its website to contact with regards to having a tag on your line. 5) Long contract terms Last but not least, contract lengths for broadband, and indeed your mobile phone are slowly creeping up, and these days you'll often have to sign an 18 and sometimes a 24 month contract in order to secure the best deals. However, there is light at the end of the broadband tunnel, and if you don't want to be tied into a lengthy contract, you could always opt for a provider which doesn't impose one. For example, you can now get one-month only contracts from providers like Plusnet and Zen, which enable you to switch at any time. Obviously, your broadband service is unlikely to be 100% perfect, 100% of the time, but hopefully these small tips will help you on your way to a smoother surfing experience. Happy surfing!DJ I can't fib to ya, dude: it was simply the feature on Yahoo homepage as I came online earlier today As a conscientious ex-UK *1 sales rep, here is a simple google just done now:- http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=best+uk+broadband+deals&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=best+uk+broadband+deal&gs_rfai=&fp=1df4639b9e375fe6 OG I nearly chose you now as best reply But instinct says that, as I'm very rarely in till much later on Sunday eves, I'd best link this Q to a few relevant others, asa test of Y/A volume of activity @ this time Anyone wanna do a Y/A search @:- Would it improve summer interest in Y/A to show number of views @ each question? Voting Question: Why do people say the college majors are useless?

I want to work in the advertising field one day, however the schools im deciding on are pretty different as far as the major is concerned. I live in Florida and the schools i selected were usf tampa or ucf orlando. usf has a mass communication major with a concentration in advertising but ucf has an actual advertising degree. I also plan on doubling the major with journalism or some kind of liberal art...maybe history or english. Another thing to consider tho is that tampa is a very large media market (largest in Florida and is also a business city), while orlando is more of a touristy type city, i want to work in either ad agency or something in non profit setting ( preferably the latter), my friend who graduated last year majored in mech engineering, he says the he hates his job but he makes good money, he also says that my major will get me no were in life. I like have taken graphic design and advertising classes throughout high school and i also do volunteer work and i really enjoy both of them.im texting this off and ipod, sheesh i hate grammar police and non journalism is not a dying field, newspapers are dying, who ever said that journalism was strictly for newspapers, the more advance technology becomes the more options you have to communicate more

Resolved Question: Band Fundraiser - are these prices acceptable?

I am doing fundraising for a high school marching band. One of the things that I am doing is sending out letters and offering different levels that local business owners and community can sponsor the band. With each 'level' there is more offered with the biggest focus on the band advertising for the business. I set the levels with the mindset that the economy is not the greatest and hopefully each business will be able to contribute in some way. What I want to know is do the levels seem even and fair based on the amount of money for that level? Also, if you read over that and can think of something else that could be added to enhance the experience for the sponsor, pleaser let me know. Resolved Question: What does 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p mean? Really?

First off, I'm not a total tech nooby or oblivious. I have a somewhat high tech understanding but I'm only 18 and haven't taken courses in anything relative to computers. This is what I know so far. 360p - Low quality ( Unsure. ???x360 ) 480p - Medium quality ( Unsure. 720x480? ) 720p - High quality ( 1280x720 ) 1080i - High quality ( 1900x1080 ) -Interlaced 1080p - Highest at-home quality ( 1900x1080 ) With that being known, here is the important part. I bought a TV about 2 years ago. It was a 26" Samsung HDTV advertised at 720p resolution. My computer monitor had a problem with the VGA input so I decided to see what it would look like if I hooked my computer up to my screen and ditch my monitor with a damaged plug. Needless to say, the TV looked terrible. I was very disappointed at how the quality looked. I did know that LCD screens need to be set to their native resolution to look good, so I set the resolution to 1280x720 thinking that was correct as it was labeled 720p. This lead to a bad picture and ultimately me not using it as a monitor and being disappointed. I then decided I should get an HDMI cable for my monitor and see if that fixed my monitor's problem (Horizontal Banding / LCD Rainbows) and it did. After this fix, I had a spare VGA cable laying around and a TV just in range of using a dual-monitor setup without paying any money for it. I figured even if the quality was bad, it was worth plugging in right? Well. I'm glad I did but at the time it wasn't that great. I just found out that the resolution on it is not 1280x720, it is in fact 1680x1050 which is a lot nicer than the 1280x720 I thought it was. The only thing that gave away my TV's true resolution was the software that came with the NVIDIA Control Panel I was using while setting up a dual monitor setup. It showed up as 1680x1050 (Native) and I was like, no, that can't be. But sure enough it was. So I realize now that my TV is 720p with 1650x1050 resolution. I thought 720p was only 1280x720 and I was wrong. Ok. I now have to question what 720p means as I apparently have no idea. While I'm at it, I figure I'll ask what a few other well known resolutions are in hopes of some good answers. Here is what I would like to know. -Why do the TV brands advertise their products strictly as 720p, 1080i or 1080p rather than the true resolutions? -What does 360p really mean? -What does 480p really mean? -What does 720p really mean? -What does 1080i really mean? -What does 1080p really mean? -What are all the possible variable resolutions for 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p that I can expect to encounter when buying a tv that is labeled so simply? -Do they label their products as 720p/1080p to show what it can display, but is not the maximum? For example would a 1899x1199 resolution TV be labeled 720p purely because it can fully display 720p but can't yet do 1080p?R T, your answer was thorough and informative but nearly irrelevant to my question. I advise you to try again if you want best answer. Also, yeah I know the NVIDIA thing isn't always right about Native resolutions but this time it was. I set it to it and everything is clear as can be. I can see each individual pixel if I look close enough and I did a screen image test. This is the correct resolution, all the NVIDIA thing did was make me try that resolution. more
