Resolved Question: what do you think of my essay?

Right, so i'm 13 and i'm doing my english GCSE a year early. this is my first EVER essay on media and its about two advertisements for two different perfumes found in Bliss Magazine. I know its rubbish, you dont need to tell me that. haha. if you could give me any suggestions on how to improve/constructive critizism/corrections on punctuation etc. pleaaase help me. thank you. SORRY ITS SO LENGTHY.. YOU DONT NEED TO READ IT ALL. THANKS. Following your close study on Bliss, comment on and compare advertisement features within the magazine that you feel are successful The publishers of Bliss magazine obviously have a clear idea of their target audience. Not only do the bright, girly colours and photographs of current and popular celebrities suggest that it is aimed at teenage girls but also the name 'bliss'- meaning extreme happiness, suggests femininity and youth. The magazine is most likely aimed at females in there early adolescent years and possibly even preteens; perhaps with ages varied between twelve and fifteen. They also know that it is important to appeal to the target audience and so have used a wide range of presentational features to ensure this is achievable; some of these include the colour scheme, lay-out, fonts and images. All of the devices used are not only suitable for the Bliss readers, but also for the purpose of the magazine which is to entertain, give advice, advertise and ultimately sell. The content usually includes pages based on celebrity gossip, news, fashion tips, interviews and “problem pages” all of which have been designed for the purpose and target audience. Obviously, their main priority is to sell and so they approach the potential buyer bribing them with a “free gift”. They also design the front cover making sure the expensive price tag is the least eyecatching part and is over-powered by other feautures. Some would say that magazines such as Bliss can be quite misleading because they lure the shopper into buying it and are only interested in the money that they will be receiving. Another way that the company attempts to increase their profits is by advertising. In the December issue of Bliss Magazine that we have previously studied, two similar advertisements are displayed, both of which are trying to appeal to the same target audience as Bliss Magazine itself which is why they have chosen to advertise in this particular area of the media. The first advertisement is for Avril Lavigne’s perfume “Black star”. Already, the name suggests a lot about the product. For example; you would imagine it to be gothic and dark because those are the connotations of the colour black. Despite the gothic style, pink is used in the colour scheme to make sure that it can appeal to more than just one group of people and produce more sales. Pink is also a typical feminine colour and so is suitable for the target audience. The name “black star” contradicts itself because stars are never usually described as black, therefore creating a sense of uniqueness and individuality which is something many teenagers aspire to be. The wording “be your own star”, tells the reader that buying the perfume can help you to become everything you want to be, therefore making it very persuasive. They also do this by styling Avril Lavigne to look like her perfume bottle. She models a short pink dress with finishing touches including a studded belt, fish net tights and a shinny, silver bangle and is posed to look powerful which breaks the weak and innocent stereotype of a typical girl. Similarly, the bottle is pink and shaped like the dress with a black, star shaped lid which reflects the belt that she is wearing. By mirroring the perfume bottle in her clothes and accessories, it suggests to the target audience that by wearing the perfume, they too can be like Avril Lavigne. The second of the two advertisements is about Coleen Rooney’s perfume. It has been styled carefully to look sophisticated and elegant. By using shades of purple rather than pink, it is still able to attract girls but looks more mature and grown up. The advertisement displays a photograph of Coleen, showing her slim, attractive outline and is airbrushed to make her look “perfect”. The contrast of Coleen against outlines of dancers in the background gives the impression of her “standing out”. Like Avril Lavignes perfume, the bottle is very similarly designed to mirror Coleen’s dress. Both Coleen and the bottle are plain black and very graceful. The positioning of the perfume on the advertisement feature stands slightly behind the photograph of Coleen and is larger than her. By doing this, it familiarises the audience with the product so they know what to look for when buying it. Written on the bottle is “Coleen x” in a handwriting style font and a “kiss” symbol to add a personal touch and a sense of trust and sharing. The products that are being advertised are both quite similar, however; although the target audiences a more

Voting Question: English essay... again?

Right, so i've already posted a question about my media essay about two advertisments in Bliss Magazine - Avril Lavigne and Colleen Rooney's perfumes. However, i didn't seem to ask it very well. So here i go again: This is my INTRODUCTION and the start of the body of my essay. I can't use P.E.E because there is very little writing on the advertisements and so i can't quote it very well. If you could give me any help/corrections/ideas it would be very much appreciated. If not, just leave me your thoughts. Thank you. Resolved Question: What language is most beneficial to learn in terms of business..?

Okay, so I'm seriously contemplating moving to one of these countries for a year, studying thorough links with my University here in the UK, and want to know which language will be most beneficial to me... I study Business Management, want to go into PR, advertising or something else media related, eventually building my own company. I know quite a lot of conversational German, same with Italian, but would it be better to start from scratch and take up Spanish... or French? Surely these are more spoken languages globally..? Also, please don't suggest Chinese (I tried learning that one, big NO NO for me), Japanese etc- it's a vote between German, Italian, French and Spanish.... and why? Thankyou! more

Resolved Question: Could you check my writting? part 1?

Could you check a piece of my media coursework and correct my mistakes? Thank you :) "In this coursework I would like to look through and analyze two magazine adverts and I will be also trying to find out how the adverts attract potential people and persuade to purchase the products or services. The first of the adverts, which I would like to look at, is an advert of a pull-alone trolley suitcase. The advert fills the whole A4 page and there is a big picture of offered trolley in the middle of the page. The picture is catching your eyes and making you to read on the whole advert. The advert is full of information and on the page we can also find a great amount of the text. On the advert you can also find two pictures of attractive supermodel, which uses the product. There is also cut out form in the right bottom corner, which allows you to order the advertised item. The company which is selling the product is trying to persuade and attract potential customers to buy the item by low price. They do not have recognizable brand name and they are not trying to sell their brand name. They are using low price of the item as their unique selling point." more

Resolved Question: Do you agree with this ?

Compared to the past, viewing of pornographic videos and magazines has shot up eversince the dawn of the satellite era of television. A lot of chat shows on television have seemed to justify concepts like"IF YOU A HAVE A GREAT BODY FLAUNT IT". There has been an increase in fashion shows on television which surprisingly show young girls doing a ramp just in their BARE ESSENTIALS. All these factors have contributed towards raising the libido of the new generation to a point where ONE NIGHT STANDS have become an in-thing among youngsters today. Even those companies manufacturing condoms are advertising it from the youngsters point of view thus making pre-marital sex seem easy. Undoubtedly sex is a basic necessity of human beings but one should understand that sex is one of the many needs of a human being and not life. It is high time that the new generation learns to live life with right values and not buy into the hype created by the merciless media and unethical businessmen. What are your views on this ? more

Resolved Question: could any English speaker help me to correct the grammar of my CV? thank you very much.?

AUTOBIOGRAPHY: After accumulating three years experiences on sales representative, I tend to change my career to marketing. This is because that marketing practices not only a simple sale activity but including multiple operations with advertising campaigns, the routes of display and surveys etc. It will be more challenging and interesting. I am willing to face and learn it. Since my wife and I finished master degree dissertations in England last month, we came back to Taiwan for job hunting. My dissertation named “Consumer’s attitude toward greener cars – a study of green marketing application”. The reason of choicing this topic is that I believe green issue should be considered to each business activity, although it is a heavy pollution industry. I read many articles about this issue and found some limitations of executing green marketing. The solutions could be that: communicating with customers through media or cooperating with government and NGOs to educate customers or ally with business partners/rivals to increase customer’s green consciousness etc. My dissertation is being examined now. I am likely to get the certification of master degree in January 2009. My short plan is to learn marketing practices in foreign company in three years. Then, I will do my best to with the balance between work responsibility and family life. The long term goal is to be a capable person who can shoulder more responsibilities in the company which I serve in. In the same time, I will try to commit the societal responsibilities in this stage of life. Serving for a firm which has same value not only can increase stability of work but also decline the friction of execution inside the company. As a result, a global company likes Johnson is an ideal one which can enjoy the work and making progress. Thus, I am willing to face any challenge at work and create more growth to company with colleagues if I have an opportunity to serve to you.  more

Resolved Question: Need help!! rearrange this essay into headings! esay best answer!?

Advertisement: Advertising is a form of communication that companies and brands use to persuade potential customers to buy or consume their products and services. There are several different types of advertising, all developed for different purposes. Covert advertising, for instance, is when a product or brand is included in entertainment and media. For example covert advertising can be seen in films such as I, Robot, where main character played by Will Smith often refers to his Converse shoes, calling them "classics," because the film is set far in the future. I, Robot and Spaceballs also include futuristic cars with the Audi and Mercedes-Benz logos displayed on the vehicles. When a company is producing an advertisement they have to consider their target audience. For instance using bright colours and simple language would attract young children. If a company were selling a beauty product, they would typically use models, as customers want to feel and look confident and by using someone attractive to sell the product, a customer would naturally believe that it will make them appear more appealing, therefore the customer makes an impulse purchase. Where the advertisement is situated is also very important, by placing a billboard advertising a product aimed at teenagers, by a retirement home would be quite pointless as would be advertising Zima frames by a youth club. A majority of television commercials feature a song or jingle that listeners soon associate to the product. Good examples of this would be Hastings direct, Clillit bang and McCain’s. The music that is used is extremely important, and can change the way a customer sees the product. There are also other ways to advertise products other than via television. Companies also use billboards, newspapers, magazines and most recently the internet. Emails in particular are becoming popular amongst companies but can be seen to customers as unwanted and an annoyance, such e-mails are often referred to as ‘spam’ or ‘junk’. Now i need someone to rearrange this paragraph into idfferent headings, which are: 1. General description 2. Possible Audiences 3. Standard Components [what does it include] 4. Purpose of this document You dont have to add any thing just rearrange parts to fit the subject headings please, easy best answer thanks! Omg if nyour not goin to answer the question, dont bother givin me a pathetic lecture on how i should do things myself. In case you havent noticed ive done my homework, hence the essay. Im only askin for someone to rearrange it more

Resolved Question: I'm 16 and planning on starting my own business. Advice needed?

Hey everyone. I'm currently 16 and when i am older i want to run my own business. So recently i decided i might as well start now! Only a small thing though. Just to try and make some more money to put towards university or something i may need. I have Taken Media, ICT, Maths and Business studies. And i have the attitude needed to keep a business open. Although, because i am only young and still in school 4 days a week i was planning on starting small working on Ebay and Amazon. (All done with help of family members) Heres my idea. Due to the increase in size of people. Generally i mean. People need bigger clothes. And some people find it difficult to afford large clothes (XL+) As they are usually expensive. Which is where i see a gap in the market and would like to buy clothes (Males shirts XL up. Trousers 34" up) and then resale using online techniques. Like Ebay... So i need you, to give me links, names and just any company (Based in england) So that i can buy large clothes and sell. So someplace like a warehouse or holesaler. The whole idea of merchenting comes into to play here. This is simply to make a small business on Ebay (selling items) and my own website (As i can make the website myself and also advertise.) Which who knows. In the future my idea may become very successfull. You may find it hard to beleive i am 16 :) I currently have 1300pounds to work with. I been saving up. To summerise.... I need warehouses or holesalers who will sell clothes cheap, so i can resale them on the internet. So if you know of any then please. Do tell me. Any of the popular supliers who make clothe, if you just so happen to have the website for where i can buy large items of clothing for resale.. (E.g Denim jeans, Easy clothing. Ect Ect.) If anymore information is needed feel free to ask and i shall give you it in as much detail as i can. I'm mainly looking for advice. Where i can buy clothes. Where to start ect ect. Thanks for reading and no silly comments please. I am quite serious about my idea and i hope it will be a big success. Many thanks to people who reply. more

Resolved Question: Why Don't We Talk About Smoking and Celebrity Deaths?

Before anyone critisises, I know what it is like to see someone suffer suffer with cancer from smoking and other related diseases, Trust me its not pleasant. its heart breaking. Actress Suzanne Pleshette's recent death from "respiratory distress" was sad. Most of the articles about it briefly mention that she had been fighting lung cancer, but fail to mention that she had been a cigarette smoker in the past. Cigarette smoking is the single biggest cause of lung cancer. It is rarely discussed, but tobacco has taken an extraordinarily heavy toll on Hollywood. The list of beloved celebrities killed by smoking and secondhand smoke is huge, and growing: George Harrison, Johnny Carson, Dana Reeve, Amanda Blake, Lucille Ball, Walt Disney, Nat King Cole, Joe DiMaggio, Michael Landon, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Betty Grable, and Babe Ruth to name just a few. Despite this, the failure to mention a person's smoking history in obituary columns is the norm in celebrity deaths. In just one glaring example, a four page obituary about the 2005 death of prominent news anchor Peter Jennings published by his own network, ABC, fails to mention the contribution that smoking made to Jennings' tragic and untimely death. A CNN's column about Jennings' death didn't mention it either. Something is up when major news organizations omit any mention the single most prominent cause of the death of a renowned news anchor. Big Screen Smoking Silver Screen Star Marlene DietrichSmoking has always been common in the entertainment industry, and Hollywood has a track record of promoting smoking. Lois Lane, a reporter who never smoked throughout her 40 years in Superman comics, was suddenly shown smoking on-screen in the movie Superman II. Tobacco industry documents reveal that Sylvester Stallone signed a contract with Brown & Williamson to plug their brands in five of his movies in exchange for $500,000. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2004 shows that on-screen smoking rates in movies have now returned to rates seen in the 1950s, even though far fewer people smoke now than in the 1950s. Given that smoking was perceived as a more normal activity when Suzanne Pleshette came of age, her smoking wasn't unusual. As the years went on, she was able to quit. But the harm had already been done. So why is the media so reticent to mention the part cigarettes play in killing off so many beloved public figures? Probably because of the cruel but popular belief that people who suffer from lung cancer and emphysema have caused their own diseases. Reporters don't want to be perceived as blaming the victim. Jacking Up Nicotine This damaging and misplaced stigma, however, ignores some important information that has emerged from tobacco industry documents: cigarette companies chemically engineer their products to maximize their addictive qualities. In the mid-1970s, cigarette companies began freebasing nicotine by adding ammonia to tobacco. Freebasing is a chemical process that makes smoke slightly more alkaline, resulting in nicotine being converted to a form that is more rapidly absorbed by the body. It gives the smoker a faster, harder "kick" after lighting up. Tobacco companies that first employed this chemical change, like Philip Morris, won a bigger market share for their products. This did not go unnoticed by competitors, who eventually discovered the change and started freebasing nicotine, too. Ultimately, it became state-of-the-art in cigarette manufacturing. Freebasing is the same chemical process that drug dealers use to turn cocaine into crack. Tobacco companies even use the same chemical that drug dealers use to freebase cocaine, ammonia. But they neglected to ever make consumers aware of this subtle, but powerful, chemical change in cigarettes. By comparison, heroin, a notoriously addictive illegal drug that has killed a tiny fraction of the celebrities and others killed by cigarettes, doesn't have this type of chemical engineering, since it doesn't have wealthy corporate research and development departments working to make them more addictive. This under-the-radar chemical engineering, and its ultimate effect on smokers of making it harder to quit, is one reason why it is unfair to blame smokers for their diseases. Another reason why media outlets are hesitant to mention smoking as a contributor to celebrity deaths may be that big media conglomerates also now own magazines and other media outlets that still accept advertising from tobacco companies, which themselves own numerous subsidiaries that make non-tobacco products. To repeatedly highlight the part that smoking plays in killing well-known public figures could result in a loss of advertising dollars. Tobacco industry documents show that tobacco companies used to get upset when newspaper publishers placed cigarette ads next to obituary columns and funeral notices, back when most newspapers still accepted cigarette ads. Read Between the Lines Reporters may also lack the authoritative documentation they need to back up statements that smoking contributed to a person's death. Most death certificate forms don't have an easy way for doctors to indicate the part tobacco played in contributing to someone's death. Industry documents show that tobacco companies had a hand in this as well. The Tobacco Institute worked quietly behind the scenes to prevent legislation that would allow states to place a check box on death certificates allowing doctors to indicate whether a deceased person had used tobacco. Such a check box would have made it far easier to accumulate data regarding the number of people killed by cigarettes, and would have facilitated tabulation of the overall contribution of cigarettes to the death rate in society. This small change on death certificates posed a distinct threat to tobacco companies. The result is that information quantifying cigarette deaths is more difficult to accumulate than it might be if the cigarette industry not interfered with what can be put on death certificates. Whatever the reason that smoking is not openly discussed in celebrity deaths, the result is a chronic underreporting of the seriousness of the damage this product is doing to our population. Every celebrity who dies from smoking and about whom we cover up that information is a missed opportunity to educate the public about the toll cigarettes take on society. We need to more clearly define smoking's contribution to the death rate, so that the living can more clearly see the urgency in minimizing tobacco use.I am also a x smoker, for only 16 months after smoking for many years.anti smoking lobby NO! more

Resolved Question: Will I be fired? Advice needed please.?

I need to explain. I am a salesman working in the media. I was just £8 off hitting my target for which I will have achieved my commission. So I pay for a small campaign with my own money to hit target. I don’t forge documents, I thought Id done everything above bored. Everyone would have been the winner, the client who I brought £16 worth of advertising for, the company because Id have hit target and Id have been paid my commission. Next thing I know I am hailed into the bosses office and am now facing a disciplinary hearing. The charge is fraud. Only when they explained it to me did I realise I had done something wrong. I was naive and ignorant and am a victim of wanting to just make ends meet by hitting my target. I have never done anything wrong at the company before, have worked there for just under a year. I know that the charge of fraud is a big one. I love my job, work hard and am enthusiastic, my manager was however livid. Am I going to be fired. Advice needed.I just want to add another point. I hadnt forged anybodies signiture nor lied. They found out because I dropped it into conversation with my direct manager. If it was fraud then surely Id have: 1) Used somebody elses credit card, one that they wouldnt trace back to me (As is happens I used my own and ensured my name was all over each peice of paperwork) 2) On the order form (For the two small adverts at £16) I again put myself as the contact person So at no time in filling out the paper work did I think I was doing something wrong. In addition if I tuely wanted to get away with a crime, Id have called up the client, offered them money saying Id pay for the advert but they would have had to sign. Again I state nobody seems to have lost out on anything here except me. more

Resolved Question: Media Studies presentation: Advertising in Sport?

Hi. I have to do a presentation for Media Studies on Wednesday, and I'm pretty nervous. I'm not sure what to say and I have to do it in front of my whole class. The presentation must be on Advertising in Sport and I have decided to focus on Football (Soccer). I know that there are loads of advertisments in the football stadiums, on the shirts and even in the names of some stadiums (e.g. Emirates Stadium). I have also had a look at the various endorsments that products and companies have from football players (e.g. Adidas and Beckham). The trouble is putting all of this into words and explaining it properly. I must explain why it is used, how it is successful, how it is unsuccessful and whether of not it has an effect on the audience/consumers. I am also going to show a video clip from a football match before I start my presentation and before the class know what my presentation is about so that I can see if they take the ads in. What should I acctually say in my presentation? Why is advertising used in football, how it is successful and how it is unsuccessful? more

Resolved Question: With a campaign manager will Gerry and Kate get more productive coverage in their hunt for Maddy?

Gerry appears to be taking a sensible decision.... Extract from Gerry's blog:- " The role for Kate and I in the campaign will not be nearly [as] public. We have to balance any campaigning in the search for Madeleine with protecting Sean and Amelie and making sure their privacy is protected. We are exploring the use of new media and using local advertising, particularly in Europe. There will of course be event driven media exposure such as the balloon launch on Friday 22nd. There are several other very good ideas being developed and a few large companies are willing to help us." more

Resolved Question: McCann blog, just gets worse..?

heres a very brief mention by Jerry McCann about the phonecall update. If I were a parent in his position, Id be glued to a phone waiting for a repeat of that call....just incase. Not going on with the tour and calling the phonecall "nothing interesting" heres his new blog... The last paragraph says it all really, can they get ANY colder if they tried?? 06th June 2007 Day 34 Today seemed to go very well with huge interest in our search for Madeleine. There has also been a little bit of criticism in the German press about the amount of media coverage but this did not seem to diminish the level of interest. The German interviewers are a little more direct with their questions but I was still surprised by the question as to whether Kate and I may be involved in Madeleine?s abduction! Hopefully our answers removed any doubt on that score and that our sole focus in all of the family campaigning is to get Madeleine back. After the media we met with a couple of politicians in private. Firstly, we saw the deputy justice minister for Germany who gave us reassurances regarding the investigation. Following this we met the Mayor of Berlin who is a very powerful and charismatic politician. He asked us what he could do for us and following this meeting asked German tourists who were in the Algarve around the time of Madeleine?s abduction to come forward. He is very popular and such public backing should help our appeal. We had to delay our onward flight to Amsterdam because of some information received by the police, which we needed to be consulted on. We diverted to the embassy in Berlin but it turned out to be nothing of interest. We unfortunately had to miss 2 TV programmes as we arrived in Amsterdam 3 hours late, very tired and emotionally drained. We did manage to catch up with a few friends briefly who we know from the year we lived in Amsterdam. They have been actively campaigning here on our behalf with poster distribution, contacting media and liasing with companies to get advertising space for large posters of Madeleine.claire s, sorry but I do know what Id do in this situation....the total opposite to what these people are doing, thats for sure! And Id treat a potential phone call about my missing 4 year old as more important than missing 2 tv interviews, hoax or not. I wouldnt take the gamble. But then, I wouldnt have gambled with my childs safety in the first place. Fair enough though, the McCanns like a gamble obviously...they gambled with the lives of 3 children under 4, so a gamble on a potential lead to find their missing daughter isnt such a big deal I guess.mshighwater, Im not a nasty person either. I was very sympathetic to them in the beginning, I donate money I could barely afford, I cried for them, along with many others, I prayed for them (and Im not religeous) and I got upset seeing their pain. AT THE BEGINNING. My change towards them isnt because I dont care, but because I do care. They are their own worst enemies, they either have crap PR advice or they want to do it "their way", because obviously, they arnt endearing themselves to the public, they arnt helping themselves, and they certainly arnt helping Madeliene, they are 2 of the most frozen people Ive ever seen, and without even knowing them I can see just how self-centered they are. Anyone who cant see that is blind. They are not normal by any stretch of the imagination, if their hearts were as big as their ego,s then they would still be a Family of 5. Im amazed at how some of you can STILL sympathise with them, so No, I wont stop thanks. more

Resolved Question: Have the recent UK screenings of adverts in the McCann case been paid for by the fund?

Or have they been produced and aired free of charge by TV companies/Ad agencies? If they were paid for by the fund, is this what people expected the money to be used for? If they were provided free, why are these companies not more involved with raising the profile of other campaigns (or in deed established charities) in a co-ordinated fashion? Is there any overall benefit to be gained from TV advertising in the UK anyway, given the saturation of media reporting thus far? more

Resolved Question: I'm now redundant - how long do I have to wait before taking a job for different brand in same company?

I've been made redundant. I work for a global media group who own many high profile brands. I have applied via a newspaper advert for a couple of jobs in different brands under this umbrella of companies. These vacancies are also advertised on the media groups website. HR says that anyone who goes via them to get one of these jobs will lose redundancy money. A) I f I go via the newspaper advert will I still lose redundancy money or be seen as external candidate? B) Is there a statuatory period of time I have to wait until I can still start with the other brand in same media group and not lose my redundancy money? There must be a way around this. more

Resolved Question: Why do the sponsors all have something to say when things are not right? Is it just to get media attention?

Kate Moss was ostracised for her cocaine use and all the modelling agencies withdrew their sponsorship to get in the news? Any media attention is good!!! But now she is back modelling... Big Brother now has a political/racial/bullying situation on their hands but are not withdrawing the show - their viewer ratings have doubled/trebled/gone through the roof. Channel whatever (I will not add to their advertising) are cashing in on it. Now jade's perfume company have withdrawn her skunk-juice off the shelves and danielle's tarting along a ramp contract has been withdrawn and some ripoff mobile phone company have now withdrawn their sponsorship of the entire show too. - BUT FOR HOW LONG? In my opinion it is only for the media attention and they will all renew the contracts once the hype blows over.... what do you think?Gaz - fair comment kate did go to rehab -but she also went back to the cause, Pete D and is still in the news. He hasn't kicked the habit so do you think she is still clean? She was back with him when she got the contract back. But when the hype was on they got all the free advertising. I also agree totally with your comment of kids today with the icons they can look up to. I can be rich by being a dumb, ignorant, obnoxious, rude, sluttish chav, hey anyone can make it!!!!!Thanks Daennyb. With a little luck this channel and the participants will be charged for inciting etc... the channel are actually pleading for PUBLIC money. I will willingly dump my tv if they get it! AND No-ONEwill get my TV license money. more

Resolved Question: Is there a way to avoid advertising?

Advertising isn’t just showing off products, it is tricking people into buying products – product of the year just means the company paid for the banner to show off, 85% of women agreed just means a few women out of 75 tested said it was ok, the science part isn't science at all. It is also subconsciously putting ideas into people's heads about how things are – women are the ones who clean the house, men are stupid and bad drivers to boot, you are ugly without make-up, you have to wear Lynx to attract women… Advertising is everywhere, it is not just kept to the media anymore, on the sides of busses, in our streets, in our toilets...yes because I appreciate being told my vagina smells and I need to fill it with toxic chemicals while I'm sitting in a public loo...really I do[n't]! Is there a way to avoid advertising? Turning the TV over or just not watching, not buying magazines, not listening to the radio, that's all easy enough to do but what about other places? There are many cases where corporations seem to have more power than governing bodies that are there to regulate their practices in the interests of the general public, it does not seem fair that we just have to take in advertising from everywhere with no way of counteracting any harmful messages being given (as we can just not buy the products, but the ideas they portray are harder to ignore). There is subvertising, it is amazing how something little like this can give people the power to counteract advertising when they lack the means to compete with their messages on the same mass degree, but subvertising can be illegal (i.e. defacing or altering advertisements to counter the ideas being shown). Surely if we cannot counteract advertising on our own level there should be some way out, of avoiding advertising? Even if we had to pay for it – such as with things like Sky Plus perhaps we could pay for an option that gets rid of advertising on TV and radio. If not avoid - then limit. Although I agree society dictates advertising I also think it works both ways; if companies had more morals/ethics then a lot of advertising would not exist and so the messages being sent out that these attitudes are ok would not exist either – if media does not say 'this is ok' less people would believe it is ok. For example; Advertisements for commercial menstrual products or feminine washes, they are harmful to health and send out negative messages about the female body. The companies are working on taboos already existing, but they use those taboos and work upon them to keep their customer base and make more money, in using those taboos they are keeping them alive and so effecting society.Yes some advertising is also positive - for example ads that warn people not to do stupid things, because many members of society need to be told such things. But society allows for many lies in advertising and poor ethics because, well, many mambers of society are ignorant and/or stupid so don't see the problem. If it is believed that people need to be told to cook meat correctly, then surely it should also follow that media and advertising should not tell people lies about products that could harm them? more
