Open Question: how do local TV advertising agencies do their pricing?

I know there are multiple ways to do it, I'm specifically curious how most local TV ad agencies do it - the ones who research, write, produce the ad as well as do the media buy. I'm aware that agencies get a 15% discount on the media buys so they get money that way, but how much do they charge for the entire package? Do they research and produce the ad for cost and just make money on the media buy? If so, what does that typically run? Is there a markup on that? If so, how much? more

Voting Question: Can they really get away with this???

I had a recent spat with the local cable company (Charter Media), I want to buy air time to air a TV Commercial for my business. My company offers Video production services to a small community (Less than 50,000), Charter Media offers a similar service line. They have refused to air my commercial on their cable networks. Their reason, "It's a conflict of interest...". Excuse me? This is air time we are talking about not bashing one another. So my question lies, "Can they really get away with this?" I already have a few phone calls in to the local Broadcasters Association and the FCC and I can get around them by using Spot Runner but my budget for media advertising is not high enough yet to use their services. Any help with this would be great. THX more

Voting Question: I need some Degree Help!?!?

Im looking at going to school in the fall although not for sure since im not sure how much help i can get. My real question is i have no idea where to go or what to go for. I thought about going to Full Sail for their recording arts or music business but that is way to pricey for me. I live in ohio currently so local would be nicer, but not needed. I have a passion for digital media. Mainly music, i love recording etc. But i also would love to pick up some photography and video editing not a ton just enough to know basic manipulation etc. So what degree would envelop these 3 things the most. I know their are electives and such but im trying to keep it simple. i was thinking a recording arts or music with a minor in advertising for the video and image stuff? what are your thoughts!Frivilous teenage things! Have you watched TV they all take graphic design and audio. If you even have a family youve taken a picture and wanted it to look good. Please if you cant say anything educated or nice just dont comment! more

Resolved Question: HELP on Advertise and Marketing !!!!!!!?

HELP on Advertise and Marketing !!!!!!!? Managing the Marketing Function Media Impact Group (MIG) is a large advertising agency home based in Tokyo and Kumamoto and with several newer divisions in other cities across Japan. MIG specializes in consumer service clients including food chains, resorts, and theater operators. Headquarters in Tokyo is eager to develop a larger client base in the lodging industry. Besides having made the company's initial reputation and continuing to provide financial and administrative management, headquarters also offers expertise, data bases, and other knowledge resources for the local offices. When a local office wins a bid, it receives 20% of the revenues. The Tokyo and Kumamoto offices jointly receive over 50% of the revenues with the remainder distributed to all other offices. Local offices absorb the cost of preparing specific bids; although they can draw on headquarter expertise. Local managers' pay includes a salary and a large bonus, 50 % of which is based on the office's current profitability, and the other 50 % based on overall company profitability. The Quality Inn chain has just approached the Kumamoto office with a request for a bid on an advertising contract estimated to require over 6,000 hours per year for 3 years. Quality has made it clear that the billing rate for the winning bid will not exceed $120 per hour, although the industry standard for this type of contract is $140 per hour. The bidding is expected to be intense with at least six other agencies willing to prepare bids. Nathan estimates the minimum cost of a credible bid will be $200,000. Moreover, given the current heavy workload, Nathan will have difficulty finding individuals with time to prepare the bid. As the Vice President in charge of the Kumamoto office, Nathan is reluctant to attempt the bid. ______________________________________... Comment on the factors in the system for motivating and rewarding Nathan that contribute to his reluctance to bid on a contract that headquarters is eager to win. What changes would make Nathan more interested in bidding? more

Voting Question: Do you think Twitter is all hyped uped because of the media?

Resolved Question: Where are the Army Ads with the 'what would you do' question at the end?

As part of a course I'm running on advertising through Media Studies, I'm trying to get access to any of the British Army Advertising videos that end with a question asking something like 'what would you do next?' One of these involves a soldier having the presence of mind to remove their eye wear when speaking to locals in order to present a more human image of themselves. Another one shows two men watching the enemy through infra-red until they look like they are going to be spotted. This series of adverts wasn't run too long ago at all and yet I can't find any examples of them anywhere, either on youtube or anywhere else. Could somebody please let me know if you have come across them? Thanks for any help you can offer.I'd also like to get hold of the answer to this question that concerns the old 'Frank' adverts and the 'This is the life, Smudger' advert: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081120201137AAOaUAN more

Resolved Question: Small business advertising ideas?

I am starting a computer repair/media digitization business from my home. I am trying to think of ways to advertise this business. My ideas so far are putting an ad in my Church's yellow pages, seeing if I can distribute flyers at my local mall, Craig's list, Google Adwords, Ebay Classified Ads, and just word of mouth. Does anyone know of any other affordable good ideas for advertising my small business? I also have a website detailing my services. more

Resolved Question: Aint this what greasy tony been saying all the time?

US firm to close branch due to lack of employees Mon Mar 16, 3:06 pm ET US firm to close branch due to lack of employees AFP/File – A Filipino call center worker from the Florida, US-based Sykes Enterprises works in front of her terminal … TAMPA, Florida (AFP) – A Florida-based firm will soon close one of its North Dakota offices for a reason that seems unfathomable during the deepening US recession: it can't find enough employees to hire. Sykes Enterprises, which specializes in creating and maintaining computer customer care services for corporations, opened a telephone call center in Minot, North Dakota in 1996. Last May, management wanted to increase the number of employees to 450. Yet an unexpected thing happened: so few people applied for the Minot jobs that the Tampa-headquartered company will have to close the call center on May 10 -- a cutback by Sykes that will result in 200 people losing their jobs. "We've been working for several months there (in Minot) to find enough applicants for the work, since we have been experiencing significant growth in the US," said Sykes spokeswoman Andrea Burnett. She also told AFP that Sykes advertised for many months in the local Minot electronic and press media for applicants. The state of North Dakota has bucked the national trend which has seen the US economy hemorrhage 651,000 jobs in February, pushing the unemployment rate to a 25-year high of 8.1 percent and pointing to an ever-deepening recession. But the unemployment rate in North Dakota stood at just 5.1 percent, one of the lowest in the nation. And Minot in particular has been seemingly recession-proof with the city's economy being based on agricultural commodities and oil production, and with it being the home town of a US Air Force base. The micro-economies of all three are productive, leading to Minot's economic healthiness. Geography, demographics and weather may have kept outsiders from applying for the jobs. The sparsely populated state of just 640,000 residents is in the far northern Great Plains, one of the remotest regions in the contiguous United States. Parts of North Dakota, including the northwest where Minot, a city of about 40,000, is located, can be as cold as Alaska during winter months. Aint what greasy says true? A job dont owe you good money for working like some of you other people said. if they paid well than you guys want to paid for bein sick but what is said is when the illegals leave you guys wont take up the work. Why do you think no one wants the jobs here? more

Resolved Question: What do you think of big media airing Canadian television shows to cut costs?

Isn't it disgraceful enough that they feed the population full of government and corporate propaganda. As more and more people tune out the propaganda matrix and their revenues dry up, they seek to bolster their bottom lines by feeding you less expensive television shows produced in Canada for a Canadian audiences. see this article from Bloomberg today "CBS, NBC Buy Canadian TV Programs to Save on Costs (Update2)" http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=afYDvToAWJks&refer=us some quotes from the article" " March 9 (Bloomberg) -- CBS Corp. and NBC, looking to reduce prime-time programming costs as advertising shrinks, are turning to Canadian television producers for new shows. Two new programs will air after the current TV season ends in May. CBS, which introduced the Canadian drama “Flashpoint” last year, is adding “The Bridge,” a police series also filmed in Toronto. NBC nabbed “The Listener,” about a telepathic paramedic in the same city. U.S. networks have made shows in Canada for years to gain tax benefits. Now they are BUYING DRAMAS WRITTEN AND PRODUCED FOR CANADIAN TV and set north of the border. CTV, the nation’s largest private broadcaster, is sharing costs and will air shows at the same time. THE RESULTS ARE LICENSING FEES FOR NEW DRAMAS THAT ARE ABOUT HALF THE TYPICAL $1.6 MILLION PER EPISODE. " (end of quotes - capitalization added for emphasis) ___________________________________ What about the American television producers, actors and everyone involved in the industry? Is there any loyalty to American citizens on the part of these media corporations, or is it all about propaganda dissemination and profit for the shareholders? They take your money in the form of increased cost of consumer goods to offset the advertising costs, but show no loyalty to the local citizens. This really irks me. How about you? more

Voting Question: Do people still like superhero comics?

I'm seriously considering starting a media production company specializing in comics. Free comics would be available online (after you register for free) and comic books would sell for less than $3 USD per issue. I want to go with superhero-type comics and also add a local slant to it (All of the battles, etc would occur in my hometown - a small place of about 10,000 people). I know the local paper would be willing to run a story on it. Do you think it has the potential to be a success... are superhero comics still in? P.S Income would come from advertising, not sales of comics. more

Resolved Question: Should the FCC pay to implement the "Fairness Doctrine"?

There's more and more talk about renewing the monopoly the "mainstream" media had on the airwaves via the "Fairness" Doctrine, which requires local broadcast stations to give equal time to opposing viewpoints. Since the only successful talk radio shows are Conservative, this means your local station would have to provide ppl like Al Franken and Michael Moore 3 hours a day of equal time - but since the liberal Air America has already proven to be not viable since nobody listens, the local station would be hurt financially. Seems fair that if the gov't mandates something, they should pay for the loss of advertising revenue? more

Resolved Question: Do you agree that Wal mart wants the people to pay their taxes do you agree with these statements against WM?

Wal-Mart's Business Plan "Let the American taxpayer fund our expenses" Wal-Mart is the second coming of the 1920 Robber Barons Wal-Mart Is The Ultimate Predator It has destroyed 100,000 small businesses, is breaking the union movement, has shipped massive amounts of jobs overseas, and has the news media in it's pocket. They are a version of the Pullman Company, but much more dangerous. Wal-Mart's Lives On It's Facade The image of "Sam Walton was just a good old boy" and "Wal-Mart is just a warehouse" is total propaganda. Wal-Mart is peddling the same nonsense the Bolsheviks/Communists used in talking the Russians into destroying their country. Wal-Mart wants you to believe that the company's efficiency, and size, are responsible for the low prices, but that is total BS. Wal-Mart's price advantage Third World Countries This girl makes $1.20 an hour. She replaced a Tennessee housewife that made $14.40 an hour, plus health insurance benefits. The housewife paid taxes which paid for local schools. You may be buying a $25 item for $20, but it is slowly wrecking your economy, and eventually you will be paying full price. Nike shoes pulled the identical scam, when it gave you $22 sneakers for $12, but as soon as they bankrupted their competitors, you were paying full price. A Look At Wal-Mart's Costs Wal-Mart does $260 billion in annual sales, and $180 billion of it is the cost of merchandise, and the rest is land, buildings, advertising, etc. Wal-Mart employs a staff of attorneys and accountants, whose sole function is to shift expenses to the Federal, State and local governments aka the tax payer. States pick up health insurance, unemployment taxes, real estate taxes, electrical, bond financing, etc. They will negotiate a special fee from their electric power supplier, and guess who picks up the tab. Outsourcing To The Third World Is A Giant Swindle Income Taxes Most of Wal-Mart's $180 billion in merchandise is not made in America. 60% is from out of the country. Their suppliers may be in America, but the merchandise, or major components, are made offshore. Not only does a supplier get cheaper labor, but there are income tax considerations and lax accounting practices. When you trans-ship a product through a 'No income tax country', you inflate the bill and pay less income tax in the US. The trans-shipping swindle Made in China Inc Tax Made in America Inc Tax Pair of sneakers' cost $ 6.00 Pair of sneakers' cost $25.00 Sold to Cayman Corp $40.00 Sold to US Store $50.00 $3.50 Sold to an US store $50.00 Sold to customer $75.00 $1.50 Sold to customer $75.00 $1.50 ======= ======= $1.50 $5.00 Their Federal Income tax on the sneakers is $1.50 instead of $5.00. Nike, which could be considered to be a "baby Wal-Mart", with it's Chinese factories, should show a profit of $9 billion on sales of $13 billion, but strangely it only shows a profit of $1.5 billion. China not only provides cheap prices, but enormous opportunities for scamming thanks to trans-shipping and no accounting regulations. The Consumer Swindle When the pair of sneakers leave China, it costs $4.00, but once it enters the 'Sea of Trans-Shipping', and the 'Land of Mystery Expenses', the cost skyrockets to $50.00. Employee Taxes Chinese worker American worker Base Wage $ 1.20 Base Wage $14.60 = $ 30,300 F.I.C.A. $ .91 = $ 1,800 Medicare $ .18 = $ 363 Fed Unemployment tax $ .73 = $ 350 State Unemployment tax $ .92 = $ 800 Paid Vacation $ $ 1,680 State Income tax $ 1,500 Health Ins $ $ 8,000 Annual cost $ 2,500 Annual cost $ 42,000 By outsourcing the production to China, you have avoided $5,250 in taxes that pay for schools, unemployment, Social Security, Medicare and public services. Typical Mayor Typical incentives Wal-Mart gets States and political hacks prostrate themselves to get Wal-Mart stores in their areas. They will forego 10 years of state income taxes, five years of property taxes, build the infrastructure (roads and power). Why will local politicians go along? A super center can cost $20,000,000, and the average skim is 10%. Whose family owns the land Wal-Mart builds on? You have the general contractor who hires favored subcontractors, and there is lots of room for ghost employees and service contracts. There is the always the next election. The same newspapers, that overlook Wal-Mart's predatory practices, can quickly destroy a political career. Governors Agree...... "What's good for Wal-Mart is good for my state". Wal-M more

Resolved Question: Can noone else here under the age of 19 see that the music industry is probably manipulating us?

Because once you start realising it, it starts becoming so very obvious and this counts for those up to the age of 25 or even more too. I'm talking about all of the absolute GARBAGE I keep hearing everywhere! If I have to listen another tailor made song spat out, without any thought or real talent, at our youth one more time on the radio in the car with my friend I am absolutely gonna puke. By now I sound like the local preacher, but I am here to bring up a different point today other than 'your music is horrible, yadda yadda yadda.' So please, listen! First off I want to point out that there are alot of songs still amongst today's youth that are in fact written from the heart and with meaning that do sound good whether I agree with the meaning and support those songs or not. But what about, for example, a sad large majority of popstars, rapstars, hip hop artists, really quite alot of music can be grouped in this paragraph, that spit out nothing but factory processed garbage that serves no other purpose other than party music or to appear to be 'cool'. And when I say appear to be 'cool' I mean useless songs like guys rapping about their 'scores' with chicks and their cash (talk about full of themselves) or some bimbo strutting onto stage in a bikini singing the same old sensual songs with no different meaning whatsoever, all these songs being forced into existence purely so that teenagers can pass them around to each other on their mp3's, put on a show of how 'cool' it is and just to belong. Sensual songs and songs that fit in with a commmon mug attitude may have an appeal, (not saying I agree with them) but as with anything if you eat empty garbage long enough sooner or later you are going to crack, run headfirst into the nearest fridge and gorge yourself on vegetables just to get it out of your system! Don't tell me you aren't tired of eating garbage! Our society has tv programs, games, movies, media influence/many other things all the time sending constant messages to the teenage generation. As teens you are, sorry folks, part child, part adult. Don't think that while you are still in a physical and emotional stage of growing up and adapting to this world that you are not impressionable, that you are not supposed to still learn, that you are completely independent, that you are not supposed to still recieve guidance and finally, that you are not *meant* to be impressionable and fall under all of the above that I just listed, cos you are! Even as adults I promise you that we absorb and are influenced by our environment so that we learn lessons and adapt in life. And where are you getting you're influence from? Alot of teens aren't listening to their parents, who by the way see and know them as a real person existing and care about them. What alot of teens are listening too is the big stars, mass formed and produced by the big companies, the mass, international attitude of rebellion that is around everywhere today and their peers, who all seem to be in the same boat as they are. Disney, for all it's 'sweetness' and it's 'charm' bugs me bigtime. For example, nobody, no-bod-y, well, most people anyway in the teen generation would not have paid any attention to anything do with a 'musical' at all before all of a sudden, "BAM!" HighSchool musical came out. Highscool has been described to us as the 'best time of our lives'. There's this 'thing' about highschool. A theme. Shows featuring highschool dramas have this theme about them as well. The Americanised idea (sorry America, but as the top able contributors to HollyWood and entertainment by default alot things will originate from you) about highschool hunk fotball team captains going out with the homecoming queen is so glamourous, and is an ideal still strongly present in our society. Look at this latest show, Friday Night Lights. For those of you who do watch it, when you first saw it advertised and at the time knew nothing about the show, what was it that attracted you to watch it? I thought to myself, when I saw the add, finally it occured to someone to make a show about one of the most world famous, American originated, glamourised teen related ideals = $$$. So, back to speaking about Highschool Musical. First, we throw in HighSchool, an element which not only brings to alot of tv shows a theme of it's own but it tells teens "Hey guys, it's *HighSchool* Musical, it's relates to you!" and makes the whole thing far more youthful. Element number two: Hot characters that people will like. Element number three: 'Something different.' And no, I am not paying Disney some sort of compliment. Seemingly in contrast to the common teenage ideal of conforming, it has also seemed to come into to fashion to some degree to do 'something different', but this little fashion or fad as I call it that has been integrated into teen society is often actually an act of conforming in itself. Confusing, neh? Well it works like this; From my obseThis situation I realise does not apply to every single teen situation out there, and before someone misreads me, yes I'm 19. And I reaise I'm hard to understand. This is up here cos I want your opinion so speaks! ^_^rest of this message was pasted here http://ever-ambient.deviantart.com/ IDIDN'T REALISE IT WOULD BE CUT OFF more

Resolved Question: This is my essay which I've just completed. Please correct my faults if you can. Thank so much !?

This is my essay which I've just completed. Please correct my faults if you can and give me your opinion. Thank so much ! TOPIC: HOW MANY TYPES OF ADVERTISING ARE THERE? PRESENT THE FEATURES AND EXAMPLES OF EACH TYPE. ANALYZE THE APPROPRIATENESS OF THEM. Nowadays, almost companies can’t lack advertising to introduce their products or services to market. There are many types of advertising. Each type has different role and appropriateness. So, this essay will focus on three types in three paragraphs. Introducing about print advertising in the first paragraph; and then, introducing mass media advertising in the second paragraph; and finally, introducing outdoor advertising in the third paragraph. Today, advertising products via print media is a common practice. The print media include all newspapers, newsletters, magazines, booklets, pamphlets, and other printed publications. The role of print advertising is to offers basic information about the company, their products or services to the selected audiences. Most print media are local. Magazines, on the other hand, have always been national, although there is a trend today toward localization and specialization. There are a huge amount newspapers and magazines are published everyday. But only some types tend to a particular group people. For examples, sporty newspapers are written for men, teenage magazines for teenagers, etc. Therefore, select the right type of newspapers or magazines is important decision of the company, which may reach larger selected audiences. According to a statistic, in Vietnam, at present, there are about 600 newspapers and magazines. Almost companies, which are operating in Vietnam, are advertising via print media; for examples, Vinamilk, FPT, Honda, etc. Mass media advertising is popular most and impact in people’s awareness of the companies and their products. This type includes TV, radio and internet. Mass media advertising is more than simply persuasive messages. Through text and through images, the ad conveys values and beliefs, and these have meanings for those who read, listen or watch them. In this type, cost is the main obstacle for companies which want to advertise on TV. Moreover, just as print ad, mass media ad also has many channels tend to many different objects. Consequently, if the company advertises with reasonable duration and right channel, the company will not waste more money and their advertising still effective. Due to the great role of mass media in the life, nowadays, there are many companies use mass media for their main publicity. For instance, Unilever present their products as OMO and Comfort, P&G with Tide and Downy, etc. Outdoor advertising, one of the oldest and most enduring forms of advertising, is advertising on signs that are located outdoors in public places. This form includes billboards, trade fairs, sporting evens, etc. Outdoor advertising captures the viewer's attention 24 hours a day. True, it has limited coverage. But a well-planned outdoor campaign can effectively cover most major markets. The main features of this type are brevity of the message and cannot target customer. So, the message usually is slogan of the company, such as Canon Corporation with the slogan is “Delighting you always” or Toyota with sentence “Moving forward”, etc. In short, using which types and using on which time is important decision of the company. In my opinion, with carefully choosing, the company can get what they need from all the variable advertisements  more

Resolved Question: Power of mind vs. Power of Commercials.?

I think if you made a commercial that sold korans as magic books that guaranteed to improve your jump shot and send you to heaven when you die, people would beleive it. Today, in Iraq I had picked up lunch for a local national that was doing work for us. He was a diabetic so I made his lunch special avoiding sugars, lots of breads, and giving him caffeine free diet soda. After his meal I saw him grab a Gatorade from the cooler to drink. That's when I got into an argument with the other American escourts about the power of American media vs. the true value of Gatorade. I argued that it was not good for him or us but we all think it is because of commercials. They disagreed beleiveing it hydrated you with electrolytes. Even after explaining why this was false they still thought it was good for the guy. Every living cell has a sodium potassium (electrolytes) ion exchange pump which regulates the water balance inside and outside cells. Water is attracted to particles (electrolytes) and sodium has a different charge than potassium, so as sodium and potassium will naturally balance out due to polarity water will follow and homeostasis occurs. (Hydration - given they have water.) Thus you do not need gatorade for electrolytes. In fact gatorade has too much "electrolytes" and has a higher osmolar pull thus reducing the amount of water that goes into your body. Not to mention the sugar in it - put in it only to make it sell better. Sugar is a diuretic. (It makes you pee thus making you less hydrated.) Plus, sweat is hypotonic. Contains less electrolytes than your blood has. Fluid loss is more of a problem usually than electroylte loss in hot days, especially for people who eat regular meals. The drink was used on Florida Gators and was attributed to their win, but that was a different formula. Once there became a demand for it they pumped it full of sugar and mass marketed it as a sports drink. Even after explaining all this, the other American soldiers still thought gatorade was good not only for them, but for the diabetic. So, back to my question. Being that gatorade, like the supposid health benifits of cigarettes of yore, is unhealthy but beleived to be so because of advertising - how able are our minds to resist what society says around us even despite rational clearly laid out arguments against the statements the t.v. Resolved Question: negotiating pay for a new job?

I am doing marketing and advertising design for a local Equestrian Center. The lady wants to feed my two horses for free (her cost would be $1100) if I'll continue to help her with marketing her facility. She also is allowing me to to teach some riding lessons to clients I am bringing to her facility. These clients have their own horse and will be paying her to keep their horse there which would offset her cost in feeding mine. I would keep any money I make from teaching, as long as I continue to help her with her advertising and events. The marketing advertising design work she has me doing is intensive and she has events planned every month that require me to design media kits, follow-up with contacts and write copy for her media packets. Advertising and design is very expensive, and I'm not entirely convinced this is a fair deal... what are some thoughts on this? more

Resolved Question: What 5 things would you change?

If you could chang 5 things about political campaigns and voting in the US what 5 things would you change? It could be any 5 things, no matter how unreasonable. My five things would be: 1. Limit campaigning to 13 weeks, 4 to chose who will serve for your party, 4 to make your case (visit the people, publish plans, 4 to debate (2 times a week). One week to rest, and then, vote. 2. No celebrity endorsements, none, not even the local weatherman. 3. No advertising of any kind.... BUT Each candidate would be given the same expact amount of money to produce, publish and distribute literature to each registered voter, once or twice per week. They would also get 15 minute slot every other day to address the nation via TV and Radio. 4. The media wouldn't be able to side at all, they can only ask questions, and report exactly what was answered. I don't really care what a liberal or conservative commentator thinks... and niether should you, I'd like to make my own analysis, thank you very much. 5. Make it easier for people to vote, more places to register, like the library, and DMV, and City Halls... and if neccesary, send people door to door or do a community drive and give opportunity to those who can't phyisically go and do it. The Post Office could be extremely helpful, for people who are changing addresses, in that it should hold mail until the resident actually registers (at the post office) their new residence so they can be aware of thier polling places . I did make the disclaimer, that the five things coudl be whatever you wanted, no matter how crazy. I don't think my ideas limit free speech, Ithink they encourage the average American to have someof their own thoughts and cause them to talk to each other. Other democratic countries do not allow celebrity endorsements... it's not infringement on free speech, it's playing a clean game... Which we all know is almost impossible in our current situation... but I think all of our ideas would help clean it up... that's for sure. There is a big difference between 'endorse' and to answer a direct question. more

Resolved Question: How can I removed residual "price tag sticker glue/remnants" from cd and dvd cases? ?

I buy a lot of used cd's and DVDs from the local record store. However, they always put a bunch of stickers all over them. (price stickers, big orange "USED" stickers, as if I need to advertise that to everyone who views my otherwise impressive media library). Unfortunately, when I go to remove these stickers, they always leave remnants behind and big sticky glue patches where the "stick-um" didn't come off. Very Annoying. Does anyone have any tips, techniques, solvents that will help with this? I have tried nail polish remover with little result. I have tried harsher solvents that ended up melting/damaging the case itself. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!  more

Resolved Question: why labour day is celebrated in September instead of on 1st may in the us,? (please read details)?

SITE MENU: HOME | NEWS | OPINION | ARTS | SPORTS | CAMPUS LIFE | PHOTOS | ADVERTISING INFO | ABOUT Last Published: April 29, 2008Boston Weather: 42 °F | FairVolume 120 >> Issue 23 : Friday, April 28, 2000No PDF Available COLUMN Commemorating the True May Day Guest Column Brice Smith May 1st is International Workers’ Day, a holiday set aside to commemorate the historic struggle of working people throughout the world. It is recognized in every country except the United States and Canada, despite the fact that the holiday began in response to the brutal massacre of workers and labor leaders demonstrating for an eight-hour work day in Chicago. In 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions passed a resolution stating that eight hours would constitute a legal day’s work from May 1, 1886. The Federation called for a general strike to achieve this goal, since legislative methods had failed to yield any results. Support for the eight-hour movement grew rapidly among the rank-and-file despite the indifference and hostility of many union leaders. By April 1886, 250,000 workers were involved in the May Day movement throughout the country. The heart of the eight-hour movement was in Chicago, organized primarily by the anarchist International Working People’s Association. The business and governmental powers in Illinois were increasingly disturbed by the revolutionary character of the movement and began to prepare for a violent confrontation. Financed by local business leaders, the police and militia were increased in size and received new and deadlier weapons. To give a specific example, Chicago’s Commercial Club purchased a two-thousand-dollar machine gun for the Illinois National Guard for use against striking workers. Despite the crackdown on labor and the military buildup of anti-union forces, by May 1 the movement had already won gains for many Chicago clothing cutters, shoemakers, and packing-house workers. When workers went on strike at the McCormick Reaper Works Factory on May 3, 1886, police fired into the crowd, killing four and wounding many others. The anarchists called for a mass rally the next day in Haymarket Square to protest the brutality shown by the police towards the strikers. The rally proceeded without incident, until the last speaker was ready to leave the platform. By this point, it was getting late and it was starting to rain, so there were only about 200 or so protesters left at the rally. It was then that 180 police officers marched into the square and ordered the meeting to disperse. As the speaker left the stage, someone threw a bomb at the approaching police, killing one and wounding seventy. The police responded by firing into the crowd, killing one and injuring many. It was never determined who threw the bomb, but the incident was used as an excuse to try to wipe out all of the labor and progressive movements in Chicago. The police ransacked the homes and offices of suspected radicals, and several hundred were arrested without cause. The anarchists in particular were targeted due to their involvement with the eight-hour movement. Eight of Chicago’s most active anarchists were charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the Haymarket bombing, despite the fact that only one was even present at the meeting, and he was on the speakers’ platform. All eight were found guilty and sentenced to death, despite a complete lack of evidence that any of them had any connection to the person who threw the bomb. Albert Parsons, August Spies, Adolf Fischer, and George Engel were hanged on November 11, 1887, Louis Lingg committed suicide in prison, and the remaining three were finally pardoned in 1893. Rather than suppressing the labor and radical movements, the events of 1886 and the execution of the Chicago anarchists actually mobilized many radicals of the next generation. Emma Goldman, a young immigrant at the time, later called the events surrounding the Haymarket affair her political birth. Lucy Parsons, the widow of Albert Parsons, called upon the poor to direct their anger toward the rich capitalists responsible for the horrible conditions the working class lived with. She later traveled the world urging workers throughout Europe to celebrate May Day and remember the events of Haymarket and the subsequent government-sponsored murder of those fighting for the rights of all workers. Instead of destroying the anarchist movement, the events in the wake of Haymarket served to strengthen the movement, spawning other radical organizations, including the Industrial Workers of the World. By covering up the true history of May Day, and attempting to pass off that day in September as “Labor Day” in this country, the state, business, mainstream unions, and the corporate media have covered up a vital chapter in the legacy of dissent in this country. We must recognize and commemorate May Day not only for its historical significance, but also as a time to organize around issues of vital importance to working-class people today. In that effort, activists, labor organizations, students, and all those outraged by the excesses and abuses of modern capitalism will converge on Boston’s financial district this May 1 to show that we will not forget, and that together we can take back the world. Tucson Region Rules waived to add security along 220 miles of AZ border By Brady McCombs and Howard Fischer Arizona Daily Star Capitol Media Services Tucson, Arizona | Published: 04.02.2008 advertisementThe Department of Homeland Security laid claim Tuesday to at least 220 of the 350 miles of U.S.-Mexican border in Arizona to build fences, roads and towers without having to comply with environmental regulations. A congressionally mandated deadline to have 670 miles of fences, barriers, roads and lighting along the U.S.-Mexico border in place by the end of the year drove Secretary Michael Chertoff to invoke the waiver. To date, the agency has completed 309 miles of projects, leaving it with 361 miles to complete in nine months. What Tuesday's order does, Chertoff said, is ensure that the rest of what is necessary can be built without having to complete full-blown environmental-impact statements — and without fearing that one or more sections will become tied up in court. The announcement, however, was greeted by disdain from local environmental-protection groups and a pair of Arizona legislators. "I think every American should be up in arms that the federal government is waiving these laws," said Sean Sullivan, co-chairman of the Sierra Club Rincon Group, which covers Southeastern Arizona. "They are just going to bulldoze ahead in order to get all the projects they had lined up completed." The waiver encompasses nearly two-thirds of Arizona's international border, including swaths of land from as far west as Yuma to near the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Some of the larger expanses revealed by Homeland Security include: ● More than 60 miles stretching from about seven miles east of Sasabe to south of Fort Huachuca in Cochise County. ● More than 55 miles on the Tohono O'odham Reservation, from just east of the village of Ali Ak Chin to near Sasabe. ● More than 50 miles across the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge west of Lukeville. ● More than 20 miles from east of Douglas to near the Arizona-New Mexico state line. In total, Homeland Security identified 13 areas in Arizona. The detailed plans — or what's already under construction or has been completed — for each of the areas weren't available Tuesday. None is a new project, said Amy Kudwa, Homeland Security spokeswoman. "We are simply moving forward with their expeditious construction," Kudwa said. The projects will fall under the general category of "pedestrian and vehicle fence construction, towers, sensors, cameras, detection equipment and roads in the vicinity of the border," Homeland Security said. It's the fourth time Chertoff has used the waiver, created in the 2005 Real ID Act to waive compliance with federal regulations for all border projects. He invoked the waiver on the previous three occasions for individual projects: in October 2007 for construction of two miles of fencing in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area in Southeastern Arizona; in January 2007 on the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range in Southwestern Arizona; and in 2005 in San Diego. Each use has elicited harsh criticism from environmentalists and critics who say no one person should have such overreaching power. Chertoff's use of that 2005 waiver authority "has created a lawless border," said Matt Clark, Southwest representative of Defenders of Wildlife. The waiver continues a pattern of neglecting important environmental, health and safety laws to build an ineffective and environmentally damaging border wall, Clark said. "That arbitrary deadline has resulted in lawlessness along the border and a disregard for environmental health and safety laws," he said. In a statement, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., called the use of the waiver "outrageous," saying neither her office nor local or state elected officials were consulted. "This is unacceptable," Giffords said. "A federal government construction project of this magnitude will impact significantly on local residents, communities and the environment. Those of us who live on the border and represent border communities deserve a seat at the table." U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., called such a broad and poorly conceived waiver lazy. "Secretary Chertoff is abusing the authority granted him by the Congress with this ham-handed waiver," Grijalva said in a statement. "With the stroke of his pen, he overturns 36 laws — some of which have been protecting our resources and our health for more than a century — in an area stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean." In a prepared statement Tuesday, Chertoff said his actions are justified. "The flow of illegal traffic through the border region imperils our ability to fight terrorism by stopping the illegal entry of terrorists, and exposes our border communities and the rest of the United States to the ill effects of drug smuggling, human smuggling and gang activity," he said. "Illegal border traffic has also caused severe and profound impacts to the environment." Invoking the waiver will prevent legal wrangling that could delay projects, he said. That's exactly what happened last year when two environmental groups sought to halt construction of fences and vehicle barriers along the southern edge of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. Challengers said federal officials did not properly consider ways to minimize the impact of the new construction. Chertoff eventually invoked the waiver, and construction continued. Chertoff denied that environmental concerns are being ignored. He said that there is at least a "draft environmental assessment or environmental impact statement" for all of the miles where his agency is erecting new pedestrian fencing. And he said most of the other projects — aside from fences to keep pedestrians out — also will have those kinds of assessments. more

Myspace is a legit advertising venue for everything targeted to the under 30 and starting to become so for the older groups. Serously go check it out. Recording artists of every genre, other arts medias, local businesses (locally to me every locally owned business has a profile with all their biz info and offered services), and for me has been a way to find old high school friends. So, if you are responsible with what you do as you need to be in every other venue on the net and in real life (how much personal info..... cont)have you given out over the course of answering qs here) Myspace can be a very useful internet tool. So I ask very legitamtly, other than the public status of Fox News/Media, why al the negative attention and opinions. Myspace in and of themselves actually do all they can to prevent predators and porn. But it happens. As a responsible parent, you should have an idea of what your children are doing on the net anyways. So again, legit, why the negative opinions? To the first poster, again, those things happen on every online community. If you are going to give the negative opnion to the most popular one, dont you have to give that opinion to every other spot those things happen? Yet you are still here on yahoo. I personally have had my yahoo acount hacked twice, my partners has been hacked 5 times and I know several other people. Also kids are irresponsible with their info all over the net and in real life. Thats where being a good parent and knowing what your kids is up to and education on the appropriate info to give out and what to do if you suspect a bad guy, then you are relativly safe, or atleast as safe as everywhere that can happen yet. I would reason to believe ya even has the same percent of these incidnets as myspace does more

Voting Question: Do you own your own business and want some cheap advertising?

I have organised a charity bike ride in partnership with cancer research uk, its an event that has not been done before, we are cycling to all five capitals of the uk, starting and ending the challenge in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. We are currently looking for business sponsors. We are selling advertising space on the bikes, equipment and clothjing that we will be wearing throughout the ride, our sponsors will also get their name/logo along with links to their own website on our events website (when it is up and running, in the next week or so). We have so far featured on Metro Radio, and in local newspapers the News Post Leader and the Evening Chronicle. And we are making new media contacts each day so we will be featuring in national news asap. If you are interested in having your business/company name/logo seen in Eng, Wales, Rep of Ire, N.Ire and Scot in June 2008 then please contact us at leeandclive@yahoo.co.uk more

Resolved Question: wrongful interference...with contractual relationship..?

1.shirle Baker owns a bakery shop. She has been trying to obtain a long-term contract with the owner of Tim's High Tea House for some time. Betty starts a local advertising campaign using all forms of media: radio, television and newspapers. The campaign is so successful that Tim is convinced and determines it is in his company's best interest to break the contract with The French Bakery so that she can patronize Betty's bakery. Is Betty liable to The French Bakery for the tort of wrongful interference with a contractual relationship? Is Tim liable for this tort? Is Tim liable for anything? more

Resolved Question: How can I promote a used building supply store?

This store was set up to divert useful products from landfill sites. While we focus primarily on building supplies, we also handle other related products such as tools and machines. We are looking for opportunities to promote the store’s products in the local community. We’re already considering an e-mail newsletter, strategic partnerships with places like hardware stores (we often have no-longer-available items), telemarketing, brochures, media interviews, and community events. We’ve had quite good success with online advertising through e-Bay, Kijiji and CraigsList and would welcome suggestions of other inexpensive online marketing initiatives. We know that our primary target market is a male do-it-yourselfer, aged 30-50 who lives within 30 km of the store. The main question is how best to reach that specific target market. Any suggestions ideas would be appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Which dog breed attacks?

MY QUESTION: WHY?Tony A- I agree, PETA sucks! Don't worry so much tho, if we can agree that all dogs are equally able to attack, and the anti-dog crew starts crying about banning breeds of dogs favored by the wealthy and powerful, then BSL will come to a screeching halt. Like the Salem Witch Trials. They went on and on with lies, accusation, and murder until finally a relative of the governor was accused, and BOOM, no more witch trials! Thanx for yr input! more

Resolved Question: Does the media owe us something?

Does mass market media like CBS, NBC, ABC, or even our local news channels and papers owe the public something? For the most part, these networks broadcast free entertainment twenty-four hours a day. They make up their money their money in advertising revenue, but still require operating budgets in the low billions every year. As we don't pay a dime, and aren't required to watch, do these networks owe the lower and middle classes something? Do you think they inaccurately portray the real issues within America so as not to threaten the status quo? What do you think? more

Resolved Question: McCanns puts Britannia on back on TV?

We read that 'Britannia Building Society is to launch a campaign positioning itself as the “fairer" society in its first TV advertising for over three years. The campaign has been created by McCanns in Prestbury' The banking industry have been put in the spotlight and criticised over the past year for being 'unfair' when it comes to the was they deal with some customers particulary over charges. Do you think with Britannia's new advertising campaign we will see other banks and building societies compete under the 'fairness' banner (much like the campaign some banks run about being 'local') ?
