Open Question: Is it immoral to airbrush pictures?

Well, is it? If you think it's immoral, what harm does it do? For the record, I think it's highly immoral. Not only is it false advertising, but putting these women out as the ideal is hurting this generation's self-image. Here's one example I found: http://www.sandstorming.com/images/nikibandafter.jpg more

Open Question: An obscure question on the environment/green living...please read...?

In the not too distant past, advertising on TV was sometimes in the form of subliminal messages (very quick images of less than 1/10th of a second). My question is, as seen as we have now converted to digital TV, can digital TV be used in the same way regarding subliminal messaging, and if so, should we use it to promote buying less and buying locally???I realize that morally it might not be right, but if it can help ease our impact on our world, would it not be a good thing? Also, if yes, how do you think it could be achieved? As in who to contact and such... more

Open Question: Is the scanner that is part of printer, scanner, copier multi unit capable of scanning colour images?

I am looking to buy a Wifi printer. The printer is clearly colour and assume the copier is but there is nothing in the details on any of the printers I have looked at to advise if the scanner records the image in colour. . I have only ever owned a stand alone printer so I do not know what to expect. The reason for seeking the information is because I have seen stand alone scanners which are advertised as colour scanners. This has made me think the scanner in a multi function unit could be black and white Any advise appreciated. To anyone in the USA you will notice I am from the UK because we know how to spell "colour" correctly. Only Joking !!! Have a merry Christmas more

Voting Question: Help on my landscaping and construction business plan i need answers under each topic please help asap.?

Promotion How will you get the word out to customers? Advertising: What media, why, and how often? Why this mix and not some other? Have you identified low-cost methods to get the most out of your promotional budget? Will you use methods other than paid advertising, such as trade shows, catalogs, dealer incentives, word of mouth (how will you stimulate it?), and network of friends or professionals? Should you have a system to identify repeat customers and then systematically contact them? How much will you spend on the items listed above? Where will this money come from? Image What image do you want to project? How do you want customers to see you? What plans do you have for graphic image support? This includes things like logo design, cards and letterhead, brochures, signage, and interior design (if customers come to your place of business). Pricing Explain your method or methods of setting prices. Compare your prices with those of the competition. Are they higher, lower, the same? Why? For most small businesses, having the lowest price might take away from profit margin; large competitors can under price you anyway. Will you have average prices and compete on quality and service? Does your pricing strategy fit with what was revealed in your competitive analysis? How important is price as a competitive factor? Do your intended customers really make their purchase decisions mostly on price? Proposed Location Is your location important to your customers? If yes, how? If customers come to your place of business: Is it convenient? Parking? Interior spaces? Not out of the way? Is it consistent with your image? Is it what customers want and expect? Where is the competition located? Is it better for you to be near them (like car dealers or fast food restaurants) or distant (like convenience food stores)? What qualities do you need in a location? Describe the type of location you’ll have. Physical requirements: • Amount of space • Type of building • Zoning • Power and other utilities Access: Is it important that your location be convenient to transportation or to suppliers? Do you need easy walk-in access? What are your requirements for parking and proximity to freeway, airports, railroads, and shipping centers? Include a drawing or layout of your proposed facility if it is important, as it might be for a manufacturer. Construction? Most new companies should not sink capital into construction, but if you are planning to build, costs and specifications will be a big part of your plan. Cost: Estimate your occupation expenses, including rent, but also including maintenance, utilities, insurance, and initial remodeling costs to make the space suit your needs. What will be your business hours? Distribution Channels How do you sell your products or services? • Retail • Direct (mail order, Web, catalog) • Wholesale • Your own sales force • Agents • Independent representatives • Bid on contracts ......I need answers for these in your opinion for a business plan for a landscaping and construction company please help more

Voting Question: what do you think of my essay?

Right, so i'm 13 and i'm doing my english GCSE a year early. this is my first EVER essay on media and its about two advertisements for two different perfumes found in Bliss Magazine. I know its rubbish, you dont need to tell me that. haha. if you could give me any suggestions on how to improve/constructive critizism/corrections on punctuation etc. pleaaase help me. thank you. SORRY ITS SO LENGTHY.. YOU DONT NEED TO READ IT ALL. THANKS. Following your close study on Bliss, comment on and compare advertisement features within the magazine that you feel are successful The publishers of Bliss magazine obviously have a clear idea of their target audience. Not only do the bright, girly colours and photographs of current and popular celebrities suggest that it is aimed at teenage girls but also the name 'bliss'- meaning extreme happiness, suggests femininity and youth. The magazine is most likely aimed at females in there early adolescent years and possibly even preteens; perhaps with ages varied between twelve and fifteen. They also know that it is important to appeal to the target audience and so have used a wide range of presentational features to ensure this is achievable; some of these include the colour scheme, lay-out, fonts and images. All of the devices used are not only suitable for the Bliss readers, but also for the purpose of the magazine which is to entertain, give advice, advertise and ultimately sell. The content usually includes pages based on celebrity gossip, news, fashion tips, interviews and “problem pages” all of which have been designed for the purpose and target audience. Obviously, their main priority is to sell and so they approach the potential buyer bribing them with a “free gift”. They also design the front cover making sure the expensive price tag is the least eyecatching part and is over-powered by other feautures. Some would say that magazines such as Bliss can be quite misleading because they lure the shopper into buying it and are only interested in the money that they will be receiving. Another way that the company attempts to increase their profits is by advertising. In the December issue of Bliss Magazine that we have previously studied, two similar advertisements are displayed, both of which are trying to appeal to the same target audience as Bliss Magazine itself which is why they have chosen to advertise in this particular area of the media. The first advertisement is for Avril Lavigne’s perfume “Black star”. Already, the name suggests a lot about the product. For example; you would imagine it to be gothic and dark because those are the connotations of the colour black. Despite the gothic style, pink is used in the colour scheme to make sure that it can appeal to more than just one group of people and produce more sales. Pink is also a typical feminine colour and so is suitable for the target audience. The name “black star” contradicts itself because stars are never usually described as black, therefore creating a sense of uniqueness and individuality which is something many teenagers aspire to be. The wording “be your own star”, tells the reader that buying the perfume can help you to become everything you want to be, therefore making it very persuasive. They also do this by styling Avril Lavigne to look like her perfume bottle. She models a short pink dress with finishing touches including a studded belt, fish net tights and a shinny, silver bangle and is posed to look powerful which breaks the weak and innocent stereotype of a typical girl. Similarly, the bottle is pink and shaped like the dress with a black, star shaped lid which reflects the belt that she is wearing. By mirroring the perfume bottle in her clothes and accessories, it suggests to the target audience that by wearing the perfume, they too can be like Avril Lavigne. The second of the two advertisements is about Coleen Rooney’s perfume. It has been styled carefully to look sophisticated and elegant. By using shades of purple rather than pink, it is still able to attract girls but looks more mature and grown up. The advertisement displays a photograph of Coleen, showing her slim, attractive outline and is airbrushed to make her look “perfect”. The contrast of Coleen against outlines of dancers in the background gives the impression of her “standing out”. Like Avril Lavignes perfume, the bottle is very similarly designed to mirror Coleen’s dress. Both Coleen and the bottle are plain black and very graceful. The positioning of the perfume on the advertisement feature stands slightly behind the photograph of Coleen and is larger than her. By doing this, it familiarises the audience with the product so they know what to look for when buying it. Written on the bottle is “Coleen x” in a handwriting style font and a “kiss” symbol to add a personal touch and a sense of trust and sharing. The products that are being advertised are both quite similar, however; although the target audiences a more

Voting Question: English essay... again?

Right, so i've already posted a question about my media essay about two advertisments in Bliss Magazine - Avril Lavigne and Colleen Rooney's perfumes. However, i didn't seem to ask it very well. So here i go again: This is my INTRODUCTION and the start of the body of my essay. I can't use P.E.E because there is very little writing on the advertisements and so i can't quote it very well. The exact words: Step 1: Using the internet, find one piece of tobacco or alcohol advertising. Step 2: Using image manipulation software change this ad to persuade people to not want to use the product. You could add things to/change the image, change/add text. You should alter the image in at least 3 ways. So, I'm very uncreative and need a little help. I obviously can't plagiarize so I need ideas asap! more

Resolved Question: My boyfriend is a registered sex offender and he is moving in with me. I need advice.?

My boyfriend is a registered sex offender. We have known each other for 16 years and been together in a relationship for 1 year, long distance. When he was in his early 20's he paid to subscribe to a website which was advertised through an unsolicited email. He joined for one month and looked at images of what appeared to be young women in there late teens / early 20's. He part downloaded a video and realised that the person on it was clearly underage, unsubscribed from the website and that was the last he heard of it. Two years later he was arrested as the website had been closed down and all people who had paid to subscribe were arrested. He was initially informed that he would probably have only a caution due to the circumstances. Images from the website were in the Computer Cache (all thumbnails from every page he viewed, around 1000 images). They weren't "Saved" to a folder, only in the Cache. The unsolicited email couldn't be found as the case was investigated 3 years later. He doesn't find young people sexually attractive, has never attempted to meet with a child etc... and finds the whole concept repulsive. The case was referred to the Crown Court and as images were on his computer and he paid to use the site and the initially unsolicited email couldn't be found, he had to plead guilty and was issued with a two year suspended sentence and 7 years on the sex offenders register. He is now one year into the two year suspended sentence and is planning to move in with me the other side of the country in a matter of weeks. The problem is that cases like this aren't black and white. There are clearly varying degrees and although he pleaded guilty to the charge of the having the images on his computer, he didn't deliberately seek out indecent images. We have discussed this in immense detail and I believe what he is telling me. What he has told me is also supported by documents from the Police, Crown Court and his Solicitor. The police came to see me the other day in lieu of him moving down to find out how we knew each other, why he was moving here etc... We want a fresh start, an end to our long distance relationship. The problem is that I am a freelance musician and music teacher. I teach at my home address in a set aside teaching room, one on one with students (who are all ages, including under the age of 18). Parents sometimes sit in lessons, but mostly they are dropped off and collected by parents after 30 minutes or 1 hour. I was advised by the Police that if I continued to teach children under the age of 18 in my house, they would have to inform parents about my boyfriend being a registered sex offender. I'm not sure what to do as should this happen, I would lose my good reputation as a well known music teacher in my local community, which is a small community. And this would undoubtedly cause discrimination towards us as a couple. I don't think parents would need to be informed if I visited them at their homes but I can't afford to visit parents at their houses as the time and long distances involved make it impossible. To hire a venue to teach in would also be complicated financially and take more than 50% of my income. The police also said he wouldn't be able to come to gigs with me as their might be children present (I perform at weddings and he is my sound engineer). This seems odd as when I'm performing at a private venue, there is no opportunity to liaise with anyone at all, and he wouldn't have any desire to but I do understand that precautions need to be made. He hasn't actually been banned from working near or with children and his probation officer where he currently lives is aware that he does gigs himself (he is a musician too) and children are present. He doesn't have any other restrictions. He has however been advised to not work with children in the incident that someone who knows that he was charged might falsely accuse him of something. He clearly made a mistake and regrets it immensely. The parole officers see his case as being a bit of a waste of time, in that he isn't a pedophile and was simply in idiot in subscribing to this site initially. But, the minute people here the term "sex offender", a barrier is crossed and it's hard to explain any situation properly. I do know that the aim of probation is to let my boyfriend lead as normal and uninterrupted a life as possible but it seems that my life and routine will be vastly affected in him living with me. I talked to a friend about this and she advised that I not work with children at all as I might be seen as guilty by association if parents were informed. I was also advised that even if I'm not working with children in my home, I shouldn't work with them either. She suggested I end the relationship because it was a lot to take on for me. I know I should probably gain some legal advice and find out what my rights are as his partner. I also know that I wouldn't bI also know I wouldn't be happy without him. We have a long history and I love him very much. more

Resolved Question: What kind of company have I got then?

I know this sounds crazy, but I've just registered my own Limited company, and although I do now what kinds of services I provide, I have no clue what that makes my company. Is it a public relations company? A web design company? An advertising agency? Anything else? I'd love it if, after checking out this list of what I do, you could give me an indication what kind of company that makes me. Here's what I plan to offer as services: - Building web presences for companies and individuals (websites, blogs, articles, reviews, translations, CVs, images, portfolios) - helping solve problems by acting as a think tank which writes proposals for strategies and systems to be implemented, designs concepts for products and services, and conducts polls and surveys. That's it in a nutshell. But where should I advertise in the Yellow Pages? What does all that make me? Thanks for your help. more

Resolved Question: Peer Review of Expository Essay Resources?

Symbols Across Cultures Student name Instructor name Course name Date From the time the earliest cultures learned to make representational drawings, people have been attempting to communicate through the use of symbols. Since the invention of technologies making it possible to widely distribute text and images within the past century or so, symbols have become more sophisticated. Society has improved our understanding of the effectiveness of a given image and manipulation of symbols in the form of advertising has become a science in itself. The tricky part of using symbols in appeals such as advertisements is that the meanings of symbols are built upon the cultural ideas and values of the society in which they’re produced. Meaning is transferred as a result of the understanding of the symbol as well as the way that this symbol is used in association with other symbols that also depend, to a large extent, on the understandings of this same society. The clues that are conveyed through these combinations of images educate the audience regarding how they should feel about various things. This is true whether the symbols are used to sell a product or to illustrate a story. By studying the visual clues presented through these combinations of symbols, an individual can gain a deep understanding of what the company, artist or illustrator is attempting to convey about themselves and social values. Since the symbol has to be understood by the public in order to effectively send an understandable message, there is an interactive cause and effect relationship involved in each symbol used in which the audience both determines the content and is instructed by it. This type of examination of how symbols are used and combined is what Roland Barthes called semiotic analysis. To fully understand the significance of the symbol and the way in which it can convey different meanings depending upon the society in which it is used, it is necessary to establish a fundamental vocabulary for the subject before applying it to specific examples. Essentially, the science of semiotics is the examination of symbols used in a particular culture or context to discover its meaning at various levels. “Semiology therefore aims to take in any system of signs, whatever their substance and limits; images, gestures, musical sounds, objects, and the complex associations of all these, which form the content of ritual, convention or public entertainment: these constitute, if not languages, at least systems of signification” (Barthes, 1964). Through the clever use and combination of symbols, even common associations of meaning with an image can be manipulated in order to introduce a different meaning into the social narrative. This ‘artificial’ imposition of meaning is what Umberto Eco is referring to when he suggests that semiology is “a discipline for studying everything which can be used in order to lie” (1976). Although semiotics can refer to just the simple meanings inherent within a single symbol within a specific dominant culture, the concept of semiotics can move beyond the mere form of the individual symbol, though. Semiotics also expands to take into consideration how these various symbols work together with each other and with the specific language, color, expression and placement of these symbols as a means of signaling to a particular group that a message is intended to communicate something specific to them. In many cases, the resulting composition is expected to convey a deeper content of some kind beyond the mere appearance of its outer form. The language and terms developed within this field are thus very helpful in discovering the meaning of a given commonly used symbol such as the symbol of an apple. The practice of semiology makes the conversation about symbols easier because it breaks the discussion of images down into signifiers, signified and sign. Generally speaking, the ‘sign’ is the meaning that emerges as a result of the signifier and the signified. It can be thought of as the total result when the signified and the signifier are combined. David Chandler (2006) tells us that the signifier is “the form which the sign takes,” or the actual image that the viewer is presented with. The signified is “the concept it represents” (Chandler, 2006), or the ideas that are trying to be communicated. The basic way in which these terms are most often applied during discussion is that the signifier, the actual image, indicates the basic idea, the primary theme of the composition or the individual picture. This can be something relatively complex, such as the word ‘enter,’ or it can be something immediately recognizable, such as the symbol of an apple. From here, the signified almost immediately follows as we interpret the greater meaning behind this image. In the case of the word ‘enter’, we understand that those shapes are letters, those letters spell a word and that word means that this is the more

I am a model myself so I could put a pic of myself on the flyers which would be the cheapest and easiest way but thats really vain and arrogant so im planning to use that as a last resort x more

Voting Question: What do you think of my persuasive argument writing piece?

It's supposed to be a feature article.. i think it sucks ...and i think my english teacher is going to despise it too. here it is:Stop Commercialism now How many times have you surfed on the internet and not found yourself to come across many ads that have popped up on the page you were on or are on? Many advertisers are profiting from what reels us in, which are these many ads you hear or see on the TV, radio, internet, etc. All in all, it’s a two-sided affair. Say you are just checking your email and you see a thousand emails. Possibly, half of those are spam from those penny-pinchers out to get you and your money. So what should you do about this? Well, you have one of two options being the check all and delete button or moving all that unnecessary junk to the spam folder where it belongs and needs to stay. Commercialism is vastly becoming a problem not a success as many assume it to be. Studies show that 67% of teens buy items online and 37% of children do. Commercialism attacks the adolescent ages because they figure we are susceptible to any commerce that they are willing to throw at us. Also, many individuals assume this to be a more convenient way of purchasing anything and it being a faster way. That may be, but how do you know you are actually getting what you paid for? You’re wasting your precious time behind a glass screen. Purchase the more effective way, by going out into stores and getting what you need. Many politicians use commerce for their campaigns. You know those TV ads that always contradict that you need to vote for so and so for president instead of the other guy because he did whatever? This is a way of a scam to get money out of your pockets and into their hands. These ads are the ones that are appealing to hear or see, just an easier way to pull you in. Commercialism also costs too much money. Most of which is probably our tax dollars. The price goes up for a product if realized that it makes a certain individual sustain a cool image by using it or buying it. Many of these can be misleading, so any time you are gullible to believe one you are giving away money that could be used for something more important. Advertising takes up a lot of one’s time. We only have one life to live right? The average American spends at least 60 minutes reading, hearing or even watching ads on the television, radio, in magazines, etc. By the time that person comes of old age, 4 years of their life will be basically deducted away from under their feet. Some say that we are immune, too smart, and too savvy to fall for such. If so were true, we wouldn’t know so much of certain brand names, dress a certain way, buy the foods we eat, and our lives wouldn’t mirror the ads around us. In addition to that, we wouldn’t need pop-up blockers, virus protection programs, and firewalls to save us from all this commerce. So ask yourself this, are we really immune to what we see on the TV, hear on the radio, etc? If we really were, we wouldn’t feel the vanity of using these things to get a better self-image to fit in with the way society portrays us to be, which is all the same. It’s kind of a win-win situation at its best, honestly and ironically enough. On the contrary, you are helping yourself out somewhat the same way you are helping out these phony ads. Sure ads can help us out by providing vital information to us consumers, but there is way too much that we are exposed to. Ads can hide the fact of caring for each other, the environment, and the community. Many ads give off a bad message to viewers. Such as smoking meaning you are different in a good way than everyone else, you’re only cool if you drive a pricey car, and also making us think that you have to be mature to drink. These messages can cause conflict in families because they could or can influence the way a person in that family thinks. This could cause friction because of the choices that family member made due to the advertisement. In that case, who’s to blame here? It all depends on the situation. To blame for 90% of it would be the advertisement because it provoked them to make such a decision and the other 10% being lack of poor judgment and self-esteem that was made better by the advertisement. So for all this in mind, why do we really need commercialism anywhere? To pay the bills, to help finances, to help make it an easier, better, more convenient way to make purchases? All it does is cause problems. What does it really help? You’re not really earning anything but helping the advertiser earn your trust and money. So next time you fall for one of these, think of all the consequences that won’t cushion your fall. Whenever you see a pop-up that pops up on your screen, click the x button at the top right, whenever you see any junk email click the delete all button, whenever you hear an ad on the TV, radio, or any electronic device turn it off and read a book not a magazine, instead. You can do many things to avo more

Voting Question: Question about hotjobs.com. Which option below would you choose and why?

Now, join the decision team at hotjobs.com. Which option would you choose and why? *Option1: Focus on a few major cities or on employment in one industry. - Because the biggest job markets (and potential revenue) are in handful of U.S cities, Dimitri could spend precious advertising dollars selectively by remaining a specialist in technical jobs only or by focusing exclusively on the New York area. But, Hotjob's profits would be limited and vulnerable to local market conditions. Furthermore, online companies were attracting investors, so if Dimitri didn't position Hotjobs as a national player, he might miss his window of opportunity. Well-funded competitors would go national, then return to the local markets and crush Hotjobs. *Option 2: Act local, look national. - By focusing advertising on the country's top seven markets, Dimitri could concentrate his sales force in Hotjobs' regional territories (espacially New York where the national media is strong), hitting each with short blasts of a multimedia and telemarketing campaign. This option would include limited spending on national television advertising, giving Dimitri more bang for his advertising buck while establishing Hotjobs as a premium players. It would also allow messages to be customized to each city. However, a poorly planned and executed advertising message could make Hotjobs seem like a Low-budget, regional player-making larger companies and job seekers reluctant to sign up for a company they perceived as too small. *Option 3: Advertise aggressively to position Hotjobs as a national brand - By coming out fighting on a national level in this new industry, Hotjobs would get a head start by establishing itself as a leader in the business for years to come. But, Hotjobs' main competitor Monster.com was better funded and already had an established public image. With much less money to invest, Dimitri could end up with no brand image while exhausting his limited advertising dollars. Thank you for your time :) more

Voting Question: HDMI - poorer image in Photoshop and Illustrator?

I have a brand new 22" Samsung P2270HD monitor and i bought a HDMI cable to connect the PC. Then i had the surprise to see that the image looks better in the operating system and the internet. But in Photoshop and Illustrator it is worse. I can se, for example, lots of steps in a gradient fill. I've changed the output color format from RGB to YcBcR444 (as seen in an troubleshooter forum on the net) and it is a bit better. Still.. how do i get it to be better than standard cable? I work in advertising and picture quality is needed. I also have this new graphic card - GeForce 9600GT.It's not about Photoshop settings as long as I can see perfect picture with standard PC-monitor cable. The poor quality is only when I plug the HDMI cable. And it's not at my work it's at home. more

Voting Question: Need help with a cute veterinary ad slogan...?

I am making a Yellow Page ad for a veterinary hospital in St. Louis. I've exhausted almost every conceivable idea and have finally decided to go for a cute approach. The ad is meant to target women with families between the ages of 25-64. The basic idea that I've been working off of lately involves a cute little girl sleeping with her puppy...a) by her feet b) in her arms c) as her pillow...with respective quotes...a) "a heartbeat at your feet b) "two hearts that beat as one" c) "a place to rest our heads"...I don't want to get too distracted from the point of the ad, which is to advertise a prominent veterinary hospital in the St. Louis area, but I want to create a friendly, heart warming image that draws the target market in and conveys the company's prestige, expertise, care, warmth, and devotion to both the family and their pet(s)...any suggestions would really be appreciated! Resolved Question: do i get an LCD TV or an LCD monitor with DTV tuner?

i need to buy a new TV, can't get one any bigger than 19" due to space available and i can't afford more than £200. after endless browsing i am still undecided, mainly because after a trip to Curry's earlier and getting disappointed by the poor feed (via a multi-spilt coaxial cable with interferance - so it was impossible to judge the image quality), i came home empty handed. On researching their products, i've found out that what they are advertising and selling as LCD TV's are actually PC monitors with TV capabilities. grrrr.... the main uses for this new TV would be to watch TV (both analogue and freeview), play Xbox 360 and PS2. i want to avoid image blur (when the picture/person/object blurs as the camera pans) as much as possible and text shadowing (whether this be black or white shadows). i don't know which type would be best, or which manufacturer offers the best image quality for my type of usage. i hate stores sales people as all they want to do is make a sale. LCD TV's i have been looking at are: Samsung LE19B450C4WXXU/C. LG LG193050 (discontinued by manufacturer but still available). LCD Monitors with DVT/TV tuners are: Samsung SM933HD LG M197WDhello? anyone?what about samsung LCD TV's? is the sound as bad as the monitors? i know putting tiny speakers into a flat tv will not produce great sound anyway, but considering i'm upgrading from a 14" with mono sound then anything must be better? more

Resolved Question: Holiday Cookie Jars...would you buy? Pricing Question?

A friend of mine and I are entertaining the idea of making cookie mix in a jar (all the dry ingredients all you do is mix in the liquids and bake) to get some extra cash for the holidays. We were thinking of advertising in supermarkets and on college campuses as well as in a busy downtown office building. If you saw an ad advertising a 32 ounce jar of all the dry ingredients to make a HUGE batch of cookies (5-6 dozen possibly more) decorated for the holidays would you consider buying this? We were thinking that this would be a great option for people who are not avid bakers or for people who wanted a cute "handmade" christmas gift. Baking the cookies and selling them that way is not an option as the price we would have to charge to make it worth our while no one would want to pay. Thank you in advance and Happy Holidays! *The following link is to a picture of the idea we had in mind* http://www.dominosugar.com/mm/images/but… more

Resolved Question: emachine d525- no webcam?

I bought an emachine D525 laptop yesterday. The tag and salesperson [at best buy] said that it had a built in webcam. Upon opening it i found a flat black circle above the monitor that i assumed to be it. However, none of the drivers worked, and the computer reported that it could not find a webcam. When I opened the device manager it didn't have a tab for imaging devices, which would signal that it didn't have a webcam at all. At this point I don't know if it has a webcam or not, and if it does, how to make the computer recognize it. And if it doesn't, is there any way to return it and get one that does as advertised? more

Resolved Question: Do Mormons prefer TV advertising over internet advertising because TV watchers are generally dumber?

Mormons prefer dealing with people who aren’t too bright, don’t they? Because bright people know that stories about golden plates, magic rocks and polygamy are a load of bollocks, right? And also, people on the internet have instant access to pages and pages of information about the Mormons whereas TV watchers just have to watch and listen…and occasionally wipe the drool from their chins as the gaze myopically at the images on their screens, right? more

Resolved Question: Does the image engine algorithms greatly affect the Signal to noise ratio on a sensor?

Im kind of annoyed seeing digital cameras for sale, that advertise only the megapixels and thats about it, even on the DSLR ranges. Is this the case, and if so what would be your recommendation of sensor/engine type? more

Resolved Question: could some one proofread my essay for sociology class please!?

SOC 100: Introduction to Sociology Origins of Christmas Mary Clark November 30, 2009 Lou Ann Gray Page 2 Abstract 1. Christmas came from the Catholic Church on December 25, 1648 A. It was first known as “Mass of Christ” then was shortened to “Christ’s Mass” Also known as “boxing Day “Boxes were set on the steps of churches for the poor on December 25th then they were opened for the poor to have their own Christmas they were known as “Alms Boxes” 2.Different ways some countries celebrate Christmas A. Bethlehem: Many stood out on doorstep, rooftops to parading in the street with crosses leading the way to the ancient effigy of Christ (holy child) in churches. Hungary: Christmas was celebrated on December 6th or holy-night (Szent-este)Mikulas (santa) would Come in full attire with presents for “good “boys/girls bring by his side one called “devil child” Carrying a switch for “bad” boys/girls. Russia: Christmas is considered “the festival of winter “now when gifts are given they are given They are given by the grandmother or (Babushka) who is still in search of the holy child, The role of father time is then given to the grandfather. 3. Festivals celebrated The time when the roman saturnalia was happening which was December17-21 Romans bought gifts? For boys/girls small ones (twigs) then as time went on they grew to jewelry and other stuff. Armenians celebrated Christmas on December 6th and gave gifts till Dec25th the reasoning for this is December 6th was the baptism of Jesus and also the day of the three magi. Page 3 4. The myths of Santa where did they come from? This myth came from a bishop in Myra, Lycia (Asia Minor) he was a bishop who on three nights a week during this time went to houses of thieves, virgins and those living shameful lives and threw gold purses for each this is where the day of saints came about (All Saints Day). 5. The image of Santa came from where? The portrait of Santa came about between 1863-1886 by a man named George P. Walker from poetry then building a description of him, the actual illustration came about by a man by the name Archie Lee of the D’archy Advertising Agency. Page 4 The Christmas holiday came from the Roman Catholic Church on December 25, 1948.This was first known as Boxing Day boxes were placed on the steps of nearby churches on December 25th for the poor .Then on December 26th this would be Christmas for the poor to have one for themselves, and these boxes were called “Alms Boxes”. During these times the holiday was known as “Christ-mass” later on it was shortened to the “Mass of Christ” When this holiday had come about there were many different ways it was to be celebrated. Let’s take the city of Bethlehem where it was said to be the birthplace of Christ where the nativity happened, on this night many villagers and townspeople stood out to watch a parade of people governmental officials and churchgoers carrying crosses and such walking on their way to the ancient effigy the holy child from different areas. Then there were those from the country of Hungary they have very different beliefs such as, on December 6th they celebrated “Szent-este” or Holy evening. While on the night the Mikulas or Santa comes he comes staff in hand and presents. At the same time he comes he comes with a side-kick one known as the “Devil Child” for this reason he carries a switch for the naughty boys/girls. Lastly from Russia it is January 6th or “The Festival of Winter” this is done by fasting for 39 days before January 6thfor this reason of when Christmas Eve is when the first evening star is seen after this there are feasts for twelve days following for the twelve apostles more

Resolved Question: Once someone graduates from college and gets a real job, are they not allowed to wear what they want to work?

I'm 19, 4'11", 100 lbs with an hourglass/curvy/athletic whatever its called build. I'm nervous for when I graduate college and get a real job that I will have to dress boring and look like everyone else :( I have 'interesting taste' like i luv these although I can't afford to pay $1000 for them, or half of that... or 70 percent of that xD http://shoeblogs.com/wordpress/images/pesce.jpeg I like to wear legwarmers, japanese loose socks, and all my skirts go above my knee (they aren't way short though, it's just at the knee skirts and longer look really bad on me). I like Louis Vuitton Vernis (the shiny colorful LV bags), and really weird Betsey Johnson stuff. >.> I'm majoring in Business Marketing with a minor in Advertising. I hope to work on commercials and later on start my own business. But until then I'll work for someone else... For real jobs can you have your own sense of style and dress kinda quirky or do you have to look like everyone else? Also if you naturally have a small waist/large boobs and butt and wear fitted clothes, will you get in trouble because you look "too sexy" although that's just your body type and the outfit is very professional? Anyways, Thanks so much!!! Take care :) more

Resolved Question: Scratch Off Game Strategies?

First, all lotteries are guaranteed money loser over the long run, medium run and even over reasonable short runs, that much is a given but it does appear that unlike the lucky number astrology stuff of the draw lotteries, there's some actual possibilities for strategizing with scratch off games so I was wondering what strategies would work best. Unlike the odds of a draw lottery, the odds of scratch off games change as tickets are sold. Lottery authorities often publish the number of tickets printed, the number of prizes in each category printed and the number of prizes in each category claimed to date on a daily basis, Texas does so in the form of a CSV file for download. They obviously don't have a way of collecting the number of sales to date as the tickets are bearer instruments and not sold through a computer terminal but a reasonable estimate of the number of tickets sold and hence the number of tickets remaining by using the total number of prizes claimed versus the total number of prizes printed as the ratio of tickets sold. This means that scratch off games can be timed, with tickets purchased when the odds are in your favor or at least less against you. But what do you decide upon, expectations? (That's when the probability of each prize level is multiplied with the value of the prize and then summed up over all the prizes and is a common Engineering technique for estimating returns on investments). The problem with expectations is that they require a lot of statistically independent chances before they average out if the probabilities are low hence you would literally have to play millions of dollars before the winnings play out as expected. Do you look for games with more prizes? more low value prizes? more high value prizes? underclaimed high value prizes? Probabilities of winning at least one prize of a certain value or higher? Using the ratio of prizes claimed to prizes printed to estimate the number of tickets sold would be able to detect if given prize categories had been under claimed or over claimed when compared to the mean and the higher value prizes would show the most dramatic variation in odds. For example, the "Super Set For Life" game in Texas is currently 89% sold based on the ratio of prizes claimed versus prizes printed but only 3 out the 4 top prizes have been claimed which equates to 75% of that prize category. Another interesting aspect of that game is that if you took the full value of the top prize which is $500,000 a year for 15 years or 7.5 million, then the expectations show a $1.01 return on $1.00 invested. Of course, the prize is actually an annuity probably worth only 63% of the total advertised value which equates with a $0.85 return on the dollar but this is much better then the original $0.68 on the dollar expectation when the game was first printed. This would seem to indicate that if you could corral all the remaining unsold tickets together and just buy them one at a time until you've won the big prize hopefully by about the half way point, you might make money. Of course, you would have to buy 724,059 tickets before being 95% certain of obtaining that last 7.5 million dollar top prize but you would have a 50/50 chance at 381,084 tickets which would be closer to the median of what you would have to buy. Of course, the top prize alone would not meet the 7.6 million dollar median that you would expect to require to obtain the top prize but together with all the smaller prizes, perhaps. Mind you, your scratching arm would be very very tired. On the Internet, there seems to be a lot of people espousing attempting to exploit manufacturing processes such as purchasing tickets at the end of the roll or changing rolls once a certain amount of prizes has been won. The former seems somewhat suspect since it's nothing for a computer to randomize the prize placement throughout a typical roll of 50 or 25 tickets at the point of printing but the latter is interesting since there is a guarantee of minimum prize amount per roll that's published to assure retailers they are not getting rolls completely devoid of prizes and it's likely that this would be achieved by evenly dividing low tiered prizes between the rolls and then randomizing their positions within the roll. Having said that, since I have scanned images of my winning tickets, I can see that my winning tickets have all been in the first quarter or the last quarter of a roll and none of them has been in the middle half but then I can hardly afford enough tickets to have a statistically relevant sample. Maybe if you have sufficient records to determine where in the roll your winning tickets were, you could email them to me so that we could get a reasonably relevant sample (I'd only be interested in Texas games for the time being). So what strategies do you think might marginally improve your odds of winning? Aside from not playing at all.Duh, I said these were astronomical odds and improving them marginally still leaves them astronomical. I just wanted to hear some strategies that people use. It's somewhat simple minded to just be saying that lotteries are bad odds, most gambling is and that's a given. more
