I'm taking a level photography and need a digital slr camera - I'm defiantly going for canon or nikon but im new to the whole thing and want to spend under £250 - does anyone have any ideas?
moreVoting Question: TECHIES! Camcorder Questions! ANSWER!?
I'm going to buy a camcorder within the next couple of months. I want it to be the only camcorder that I'll ever purchase, so it has to meet all my requirements. My main requirements are:
- Long battery life (after each charge)
- Night-shot/night-vision/infrared (or whatever else it's called)
- Good visual quality
- Handheld
- Long recording time (40+ hours)
- Digital still photographs (whatever the quality)
- No more than £500 (preferably around £250)
My questions are...
- I don't have a HD television and I don't plan to buy it any time soon, but I do want good quality recordings (I'd be happy with this kind of quality http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JfJ0-jYYhc or perhaps even a bit lower) -- should I buy a HD camcorder? Will the quality be the same/similar as it would look on a HD screen if played on a SD screen?
- I know HDD cameras can record for hours. How many hours (per disk) can the average flash camcorder record? And the average DVD camcorder? Is a much larger capacity disk available to purchase separately? If so, how much (£)?
- How are HDD/Flash recordings put into DVD disks? Does it have to be saved on to the computer first? Can the recording be edited whilst in the camcorder?
- For those who have a bit more time on their hands... I plan to buy my camcorder at Argos. Which one is best for me? http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Browse?pp=80&s=Relevance&storeId=10001&catalogId=1500002201&langId=-1&c_1=1|category_root|Photography|14419436&c_2=2|14419436|Camcorders%2Band%2Baccessories|14419485&c_3=3|cat_14419485|Camcorders|14419490
(excluding 'Internet only' products).
Those are a lot of questions that need answering! So get on with it! :-D- I've just learnt something about SSD - is that another word for flash? Is it better than HDD (for me)?
- How many hours of video can an average HD flash camcorder record onto a 6GB disk?- I decided that I want either a HDD/Flash hybrid camcorder or just a high capacity Flash camcorder and I'm very interested in SSD camcorders.
- I've become interested in shooting time lapse videos.:-\ I think the budget's quite reasonable - Argos is selling a handheld HD camcorder with nightshot for 180 quid. What I mean by "night-shot/night-vision/infrared" is being able to FILM IN THE DARK.
moreResolved Question: Should I be being paid to go to college if I am doing an apprenticeship? (Dental Nurse NVQ3)?
Hi there people, I started training as a dental nurse 3 weeks ago and in my interview and on some contract-sheet-of-paper-thing I signed that I would attend college Friday afternoons unpaid to do an NVQ Level 3 in dental nursing so I would qualify in June/July next year. Apparently I'm very lucky as other girls at the practice have been there for years and still haven't been put on a course to get their qualification. I was keen on this originally and it was all fine and dandy until I actually started and was informed by my other classmates at college that their employers pay them for the full afternoon (the course is 3 hours from 1-4 but obviously you're not at work for that time and travelling to college etc). I am the only one not getting paid, and to add insult to injury, because I am under 25 they told me my employer will actually receive money from the government for having me as an apprentice.
I really like my new job; I got it on the grounds I have a photography degree and when I qualify my manager wants me to lead his practices in Clinical Photography and train other dental nurses to use digital SLRs - he's currently getting me to do loads of photography as well as nursing. My manager is lovely, but he is also my dentist and I don't want there to be any friction - I seem to be impressing so far, as I work and try very hard. My only issue is that I'm doing a 42 hour week, some overtime and a 3 hour college course with home study time of a minimum of 5 hours a week (50 hours of work a week without travel included). The job is extremely demanding and tiring, I have to cycle half hour there and back and to make up the time I'm at college I have to do 2 late nights a week. Should I approach my manager about this? I'm currently living in teeth land, dreaming in teeth land and would like a little relax time from it other than just weekends to be honest with you!! I'd appreciate any info, like how much my manager gets paid for me to do an apprenticeship and what you would do? Cheers x

moreResolved Question: An alternative to Windows Moviemaker?
Hi! I'm a student studying photography. I love to experiment creating music videos but I only have a compact digital camera to do that (It's a Panasonic 'Lumix' if that's important later).
My problem is that the videos are recorded onto a quicktime format, which means that even though I have windows moviemaker on my computer, I can't use these video clips because it doesn't 'accept' that type of video file.
So here are my questions (an answer to ANY of them would be useful!):
What type of movie/video file DOES windows moviemaker accept?
Is some sort of file converter program I could download, perhaps?
And the big one:
Is there an alternative to windows moviemaker that you could suggest?
I'm happy to pay for the software if needed, I just hope it isn't too expensive!
Also at this point I'm really desperate to get these movies rolling, so any difficulty of program - beginner or advanced - is better than nothing!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, you're making my dreams come alive :)

I have sound so far that film even when scanned is much better than raw file work @ 12MP+
So I need a little convincing before taking the next step into purchasing a DLSR. Can you help?
So far in the photo magazines I see a lot of highly polished 'hobbyist' digital, but no sense of 'making' photographs. Perhaps the great John Szarkowski was right after all when he described the descriptive elements and motivations of straight photography? Your opinion welcomed.Good answers so far. And thanks for the link! I work intensely with both film and digital formats in darkroom and digi-suite environments on a regular basis. From my research into the art of "making photographs" (as opposed to taking) I have found that intuition, skill, expression and detail prevail with film. The fact you can't look into an LCD screen encourages a sense of visualisation. I've been told the 'tools' to do the same job expression many times. My senior lecturer has encouraged my love of film over digital with many advantages in tact. The problem is, I have to face digital to further my career in this area.

moreResolved Question: Sanyo Xacti VPC-TH1 Camcorder - Have you got/had one?
Hi,
So does anyone own a Sanyo Xacti VPC-TH1, what do you think of it? I've read the PDF file on it's spec and it seems as if it would be fine for what I need. I have read some bad reviews about it though, which is kinda putting me off... but it sounds as though the people who leave the bad reviews are expecting alot more from a camcorder than myself.
http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0316175265.1258832006@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdjadeiljljdidcflgceggdhhmdgml.0&category_oid=&sku=017253&page=Product&fm=10&sm=2&tm=0
I am going to be buying my very first camcorder soon. I currently use the video recording function on my 3 year old Sony digital camera (Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-T5 - so the video quality is poor-ish). I mainly make for memories, but also I do upload some to Youtube. I also like to edit them (delete parts, add titles, descriptions etc) in Windows Movie Maker (on my Vista PC).
Obviously I want a camcorder that is going to be better quality than what I am using now, which to be honest wont be that hard! But I would also like the camcorder to be fairly ok for taking still pictures too. When I take pictures on my Sony Digital Camera, I just set it to the lowest setting (VGA/Email) rather than 1, 2 or 5 megapixels. I am happy with the quality, because I only look at them on my PC and maybe get some printed as a normal photo. I am not into photography so don't need amazing quality photos.
The Sanyo Xacti VPC-TH1 camcorder is capable of taking 2mp photos, which I think will be fine for me. Alot of other camcorders around the same price (£200 GBP) only take images of 0.5/0,8mp.
I see it's HD, although it's not FULL HD? because it's only 720 rather than 1080 (God I have no idea what I am talking about!). I'm not really after recording in HD, because I heard it can be a nightmare trying to get it onto Windows Movie Maker because it wont recognise the file etc. It all sounds like too much grief to me!
moreResolved Question: Fujifilm s5600 Digital Camera?
Hello,
I have just bought a Fuji s5600 for my wife who is keen to take up amateur photography. I got the camera for £80 new, with a years warranty. I have the option to return the camera within a week, should I actually look into buying a fuji s1500? it would cost another 90-100 quid. The main difference i can see is the pixelation (5mp to 10mp) but as she is just getting to grips I can't see this being something I should bother about. Also there are lenses to buy for the s5600, are these worth looking into? I would like my missus to learn more about photography so is it worthwhile to get additional lenses for her?
