Resolved Question: how do i start a recruitment agency?

So i'm starting a recruitment agency. After much research and info i know how it works. However, to build a client base, what does this consist of. How can you get big retailers or companies to advertise their jobs with your agency. What makes yours so different to other agencies? more

Resolved Question: Have you ever worked in the adult film industry?

Okay, I'm an open minded graduate, looking for a bit of cash. Recently while trawling through a recruitment website, I stumbled across an advert looking for people to feature in adult movies. People could either take up fully clothed roles and feature as extras, or they could have more "hands on roles" if they were comfortable to do this. Naturally I clicked on the link http://fantasy-flix.com/ and emailed them. They phoned me back that same day, explaining who they were, and how they operated etc. It all sounded fairly professional (actors are all tested beforehand and so on). They then asked me a few questions so they could obtain a profile of me, which they then uploaded to their distributors. Because I was unwilling to do certain things (I'm not THAT open-minded), my profile came back with a 45% success rate. This means that 45% of their clients would hire me. She said this was a fairly good return, and that the minimum they'll accept is 30%. She then asked me for a picture, which I duly supplied. At the risk of sounding arrogant or conceited, I'm a rather good-looking guy, and I work out a lot. Having received the pics, the girl that I'd been dealing with was adamant that I would easily obtain employment. She asked if I would be able to work immediately, to which I replied yes. As she scrolled through her database, she informed me that there were jobs very near me starting in two weeks. It's a days work, 3-4 hrs, and I get a minimum of £800. Tempting? But here's the part that's left me concerned. They ask for advertising fees as they're essentially a recruitment agency. It's £200 for 3 months, £400 for 6 months or £600 for a year. What should I do? more

Resolved Question: DPA by an advertisement company, how do I complain?

Hi, I was working in an estate agency . One day , a sales person from my local borough came to my office in order to promote an advertisment opportunity in the local borough street map. I was interested but I told the gentleman that I would advertise for the new company I was about to open myself in two months. He agreed with the conditions and took my personal details for the meantine and he was supposed to give me a call back and take the relevant informations that i wanted to print on the street map. Two months later,I reveive the printed street maps along wiht an invoice, al when I look up for the ad, it was all my personal details were printed. It included my home address,my cell phone number,my personal email address, and my home phone number along with the old agency company name and their fax number. I was furious to see this! First of all the ad made no sense since all the informations were mixed up and secondly, my personal data were printed like this and now are in reach of the whole community of my local borough. I was shocked to know the council itself could make such a huge mistake. I have been receiving so many calls on my phone (both cell and home) ,my email id is full of spams. Now that they are asking for the invoice payment,I wrote them a letter to complain about the situation and recently they wrote back to me saying they refuse my complain and still expect the payment. The reason they give me was that I was suppoised to call them in roder to tell them the infromation I wanted to be printed on the ad,they said they called at home and no one anser and plus they said they send many fax at my old agency! Why would they send fax there when i specifically had told them I will not be there anymore. They finish the letter by stating that since they had no reply from me,they printed my personal data!! I still cannot beleive they did that just for the sake of an ad and some hundred pounds.I mean the council prefered to print my personal details rather than cancelleing the ad. I called them when i recieved their letter and still stand by saying they did nothing wrong. I dont understand why they dont realize the gravity of their mistake . I work with my clients personal data,I know how careful i have to be with their details ,any mistake and I can be sued for data protection leakage. Please help to reply back to them with strong words so this issue is for once and for all finished. I will not pay for this ad .Period. I want them to realize their mistake ,and compasate me for the damages it did to my personal life ( compensation is just to scare them off,I dont want it lol) And now then sent me a court notice saying that if I still dont pay within 3 days they will take me to court. I should be taking them to court! (but cant affort it..) Many Thanks. more

Resolved Question: I have been un-employed for 11 months?

I was working in the insurance industry and have 5 years accounting experience. I really don't know why I can't find a job with my experience I have gained over the years. I am 26 and have applied for about 650 jobs online since being out of work. I know there is alot of competition out there but I must be doing something wrong. I recently attended a job seminar which was very helpful which was funded through the job centre. I have since updated my CV, joined ‘linkedin’ as the guy said a lot of companies are not going through job agencies anymore and are advertising jobs through social networking sites to reduce costs although I am finding this really tough as I can’t seem to find a job which matches my level of experience. Apart from applying for jobs online, I have emailed about 250-300 companies directly, emailed old clients I use to work with and have emailed former work colleagues/managers but unfortunately nothing turned up. I have not done any studies or anything just yet as I am waiting to start work and then take my accountancy studies once I have joined a company as they can fund that for you. I think also the longer I am out of work the harder I am going to find it especially as employers don’t like when people have huge gaps on their CV. Every day apart from the weekend is like Groundhog Day for me. Wake up late, look for work on about 10 different job sites, chase job agencies, watch TV, have dinner, go gym, check Facebook then play Playstation 3 until the early hours. I use to go travelling quite a bit and would like to do some more once I start earning some money so that is another out of many other reasons why I would like to get back into work. I am so eager to get back into work its unreal. My parents just say keep going and something will turn up and im sure something will, im not going to give up as I know its just a matter of time. If you have any opinions, find yourself in a similar situation or would like to give me any advice then please share your thoughts, thanks. more

Resolved Question: Has anyone ever head of CA Talent Agencies In Toronto?

I sent a demo to them for voice-over work. A gentleman from there called me and told me in no uncertain terms he wants to sign me. Then he advised me it would cost $225.00 to put me on something called "Breakdown Express" which he said would advertise my talent for possible clients for one year. My concern is that I read on greatvoice.com, which is supposed a premier resource for V/O talent that no legitimate agency needs money up front; real agencies get paid AFTER you get work. Has anyone worked with CA Talent, or can point me in the right direction? I don't have a lot of money, so $225.00 is a lot for me to just burn on another scam. more

Resolved Question: Is Cebu Pacific allowing travel agencies to book flights in advanced of their advertised Piso Fare sales?

Cebu Pacific, a Philippine airline company, has become famous and much sought-after for its popular Piso Fares that cost, literally, a peso each (exclusive of travel tax and terminal fees). There has been a lot of incidents happening lately, that a day in advanced of the one of the airline's scheduled Piso Fares, most of the flight dates are booked solid during the travel period. Is Cebu Pacific intentionally blocking their flight schedules during sale dates, or are they giving various Philippine travel agencies first dibs at securing dirt cheap airline fares that they, in turn, sell to their clients at regular rates? more

Resolved Question: Ladies. I decide to be honest with this lady i think is special. Please tell me what you think?

So... I am 34 and she is 28. We have been business asociates for about two years and developed a good relationship as friend as well. One night we went out to celebrate a business acheivment together with other friends and ended up alone together at the end of the night. I always liked her but had never really been with her alone as she was a client at my advertising agency. I own the company by the way. So we ended up making out all night which was great. I really do think she is special. Since then we have been out a few more times one of which things got very hot between... We seem to enjoy eachothers company! At the same time she seemed distant and undecided about what she wants. Her xboyfriend broke up with her recently. Since things were going a little weird I decided to talk. I told her that I can't play games with her and that I am going to be straight. I told her I like her and made sure that she undrstood that I wasn't playing around. She then said she wants to take things slow... I was kind of cool with that so I plYed along and even though she made kind of a small effort to invite me a out she often seemed like she dosnt like me... We have been to my place a few times and I have been good (I am not looking for sex). So after a little back and forth I told her the following. "I really like you, and I really feel you are still healing and I am looking for somthing that is simple and clear... I totaly understand and I love you as a friend but I really can't get into anything with Simone that clearly dosnt know what they want. Especially to you. Take the time to clear up your head and if you do then let me know... You never know what can happen.". Be honest and tell me what you think? I Was in a relationship with a married woman for 4 years. It completely tore me apart! I just don't feel like I have tome for people that don't know what they want! Am I wrong foe going about it in this way? And if she likes me really would this not make her understand how I feel? more

Voting Question: How does an advertising online business work?

I've been curious to know the inner mechanisms of an online advertising agency. What do they do? They pay anyone who put one of the company's ads on their website? ... How do they get clients? Resolved Question: I made the right move? But why do you think she ended wanting to talk? Is she interested for real?

So here is the story... I have been sort of going out with this lady... she happens to be a client at MY advertising agency as well so we have knon each other for 2 years and we were always friends. We have been out and made out a couple of times but to be honest she seems very undecided about what she wants at least from what I gather. After watching her go hot and then cold and then hot again... I decided that I am not up for games. I sent her an sms that explained that I am not willing to be around someone that dosn't know what they want... and I have no patince for games when it is with some one that I am really interested in. Both me and her have enough people around us if we want to mess around... But because I don't feel its right to mess around with her I made it painfully clear that I think we should leave it at that with no hard feeling. I was very direct and straight. I want to make sure that she understands where I am standing! She answered in a word saying that I am rude... and I just said... I am not rude... Just making sure to be Clear. Sorry if you think other wise. We left it at that. So that was that and the next day went by as all the others. We spoke on the phone about work and all was cool. I was feeling good that I left it alone. All of a sudden she then sent me a message that evening asking to go for cocktails. I accepted and she came over to this place we ususaly meet adn seemed kind of streessed. She tried to explain to me that she is a very scared and afraid and thats why she like to take it slow with me. I said slow is fine... But Back and forth is not. She agreed that I have a point but again kind of insisted that we stay all afternnon together... She again ended up in my arms and we had fun... but no kissing... we kind of made plans to do other stuff aswell... What do you really think is going on with this girl? Is she playing games? is she jsut keeping her options open? Or is she really into me ? I have layed all my cards on the table and I am sure she has got the message that no playing around with me. And she still shows up? What should I do and what is on her mind? Is she for real...? Or should I just drop it? more

Resolved Question: I'm kind of getting mixed up with a lady client which I really like. Is she playing me or is she for real?

I am getting mixed up with a client of mine which Im not sure of her intentions as she has very recently broken up with her xboyfriend.  I don't know what she wants? So we went out to celebrate a business acheivment and ended up making out one night and she was a bit distant in the morning even though I asked her out again!. I layed off but I think she is my type so I asked her out Again. She said she couldn't make it and the next day she asked me out but I had to work. The next week went by and of course we continued to work as always very profecionally. Then, She openned one day and told me she had just broken up with her xboyfriend about 2 weeks ago and she was with him for about 6 months. We went out again and ended up making out all night at this bar again. She seem to need some loving as she was always in need if a hug, but she only let's go of her defences when she has a few drinks... Or so it seems. I asked her to take off for the weekend and she seemed quite keen on that but explained to me that it was her best friends birthday so even though she would love to come, she can't.  I left it at that since I got the feeling that she seemed a little undecided about her feelings. We have known eachother for two years so I really don't want to put either of us in a difficult position. As the days went by and I layed off she asked me to go for a drink after work one night... And so we did and we sat down and chatted. She tried to tell me that she thinks I have missunderstood her. As if she was trying to tell me that she dosnt want me to lay off! She said that she thinks I have the wrong idea. As if she was telling me that she wants me but in a shy way. She tried to explain to me in a few words that she is a little afraid and that's why she is acting a little weird.  I told her I understand and explained that I would not be messing around with a client if I wasn't serious about her... She would constantly look down and seemed again kind of weird behaived. But also when we kissed we were really pationate and it was hard for us both told back. She always insists on explainig to me how she is when she is in a relationship! Why?  I really would like to at least slightly understand what she wants. Is she just playing around with me?is she interested and just scared? What is it she wants and what is my best move? She kind really delays to answer to any message I send her and dosnt make many moves but as I said we have been out a few times.  One night she said she would drop by for a drink but only for a little while as she had other plans with girlfriends. She ended up nor leaving all night and we started going at it again nut she seemed frigile and somehow calm in my arms. It fealt good! Of course this could all just be From drinking too much again! That was are second time alone together. We ended up sleeping at my house! Just sleeping!  The last time I saw her was last Sunday as she asked me out! went out all day ate, drank, laughed and it was obvious were having a blast! When leaned over to kiss her she turned away! Weird! Then we went to my place and she fell asleep on my couch. She Woke up later on that night and went home. So that's it. What is up?   What question should I ask that would help us. I'm not saying I can't accept rejection from her. But I really would like to understand what's she wants! How should I play my cards. I am 34 and she is 28. I have an advertising agency and she is an employee at one of my biggest clients.  Is she a player? And just making smart moves? Or is she really a little afraid and hurt?   more

Resolved Question: Lawyer ethics help. Who should do what?

Let's say a divorced couple returns to court after several years regarding a change of issue. They both are happy with their own lawyers. But in the time since the first suit the plaintiff's lawyer has joined another firm which has been employing, and continues to employ an advertising agency at which the defendant is a key employee. The firm has been very happy with the ad agency. Now that the plaintiff's lawyer has moved, the defendant is now creating ads for the plaintiff's lawyer's firm. Should the plaintiff get a new lawyer? Should the Plaintiff's lawyer drop his client? Should the firm drop the ad agency? Or, should nothing change? Are there ethical guidelines in place for this kind of situation?Oh, BTW, this hypothetical situation is set in California. more

Resolved Question: What can Jobseekers and Employment Agencies do to avoid being FOOL by COMPANIES ?

When COMPANIES advertise for job openings the salary budget is "Negotiable". Then they get the employment agencies to help them to source for the same openings but setting different salary budgets for different employment agencies to work on. Currently employment agencies “Do Not Disclose Companies Name" to jobseekers they represent. Consequently the same jobseeker may be sending to the same "Company" directly or through different employment agencies with different salary budgets. 1) Now if you are the Company receiving the same CVs from the same jobseeker with different salary budget via different sources what will you think and do with the same jobseeker ? 2) If you are a Jobseeker, do you think you will get the job ? 3) If you are the Employment Agency do you think you can close the deal ? The consequences will be the Companies asking to see more CVs and lose confidence with the jobseekers at large and ended up taking a longer time for employment agencies to close deals. This will affect the survival of jobseekers and employment agencies. So I urge Employment Agencies “To Disclose Company Names" they represent to all jobseekers from the start to avoid duplicated CVs with different salary budgets ended in the hands of Companies. Jobseekers and Employment Agencies have to work closely to share information about Companies who are out there to "Test Market" and wasting jobseekers and employment agencies time, effort and money bearing in mind that the Companies do not pay a single cent at all. By not disclosing and sharing information about the "Companies" amongst employment agencies and jobseekers it will only drive employment agencies and jobseekers into desperation. Companies will take advantage of this weakness and keep setting lower and lower salary budgets for employment agencies to work on. This will further create for frustration and desperation amongst employment agencies and jobseekers. The job market in Singapore is small and the employment agencies and jobseekers have to work "Smart" and not let the Companies “Fool” them. Employment agencies should not worry about jobseekers sending their CVs direct to their Clients cause most of the Companies have that "Shopping for the Best Candidate" attitude through various sources. At the end of the day it is all about which jobseeker has the "BEST MATCH" in the eyes of the Companies not the employment agencies nor the jobseekers.Companies may instruct employment agencies “Not to Disclose" their Companies Names to jobseekers so that they are better "Manipulate" jobseekers and employment agencies. Companies usually want to portray themselves as good employers who are willing to pay what the jobseekers are worth for. So they choose to hide behind these employment agencies to "test market" without dirtying their own hands. I WELCOME PUBLIC COMMENTS ON THIS ISSUE !! Resolved Question: Should I take this matter to small claims court?

I started working for a friend's advertising agency last April as a graphic designer. I did several jobs for him, but he was always late to pay me, and always gave me the run-around about why he couldn’t. He was always demanding work be done by a specific, strict deadline, but he always took his sweet time to pay me. But what was weird was that he always had money and was always taking clients out to eat with the company debit card, and on a few occasions, I saw him use the card at liquor stores and restaurants in casual settings. I was suspicious. The last job I did for him was a billboard for a client, and I originally charged $1,000 to design it. After the billboard went up, he reduced it to $900 for some reason!!!!! I couldn't legally do anything though because it wasn't in writing yet. He then made a contract that said he’d pay $90 payments from January to October. I wanted the payment in full, but payments were fine. However, ever since January, he has been late on the payments, giving me attitude every time I remind him to pay me, which I have to remind him EVERY time to pay me (if I didn't, he wouldn't pay me at all) and I feel I’m being treated very unfairly. Should I sue? I no longer work for him. more

Resolved Question: Did anything like this take place on Collins project ?

<Backlash: Women Bullying Women at Work Katherine Streeter By MICKEY MEECE Published: May 9, 2009 YELLING, scheming and sabotaging: all are tell-tale signs that a bully is at work, laying traps for employees at every pass. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Peter DaSilva for The New York Times Kent Kaufman and Laura Stek, right, of the Growth and Leadership Center, coach Cleo Lepori-Costello, left, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, on communication skills. During this downturn, as stress levels rise, workplace researchers say, bullies are likely to sharpen their elbows and ratchet up their attacks. Its probably no surprise that most of these bullies are men, as a survey by the Workplace Bullying Institute, an advocacy group, makes clear. But a good 40 percent of bullies are women. And at least the male bullies take an egalitarian approach, mowing down men and women pretty much in equal measure. The women appear to prefer their own kind, choosing other women as targets more than 70 percent of the time. In the name of Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, what is going on here? Just the mention of women treating other women badly on the job seemingly shakes the womens movement to its core. It is what Peggy Klaus, an executive coach in Berkeley, Calif., has called the pink elephant in the room. How can women break through the glass ceiling if they are ducking verbal blows from other women in cubicles, hallways and conference rooms? Women dont like to talk about it because it is so antithetical to the way that we are supposed to behave to other women, Ms. Klaus said. We are supposed to be the nurturers and the supporters. Ask women about run-ins with other women at work and some will point out that people of both sexes can misbehave. Others will nod in instant recognition and recount examples of how women more so than men have mistreated them. Ive been sabotaged so many times in the workplace by other women, I finally left the corporate world and started my own business, said Roxy Westphal, who runs the promotional products company Roxy Ventures Inc. in Scottsdale, Ariz. She still recalls the sting of an interview she had with a woman 30 years ago that turned into a one-person firing squad and led her to leave the building in tears. Jean Kondek, who recently retired after a 30-year career in advertising, recalled her anger when an administrator in a small agency called a meeting to dress her down in front of co-workers for not following agency procedure in a client emergency. But Ms. Kondek said she had the last word. I said, Would everyone please leave? She added, and then I told her, This is not how you handle that. Many women who are still in the work force were hesitant to speak out publicly for fear of making matters worse or of jeopardizing their careers. A private accountant in California said she recently joined a company and was immediately frozen out by two women working there. One even pushed her in the cafeteria during an argument, the accountant said. Its as if were back in high school, she said. A senior executive said she had finally broken the glass ceiling only to have another woman gun for her job by telling management, I cant work for her, shes passive-aggressive. The strategy worked: The executive said she soon lost the job to her accuser. ONE reason women choose other women as targets is probably some idea that they can find a less confrontative person or someone less likely to respond to aggression with aggression, said Gary Namie, research director for the Workplace Bullying Institute, which ordered the study in 2007. But another dynamic may be at work. After five decades of striving for equality, women make up more than 50 percent of management, professional and related occupations, says Catalyst, the nonprofit research group. And yet, its 2008 census found, only 15.7 percent of Fortune 500 officers and 15.2 percent of directors were women. Leadership specialists wonder, are women being overly aggressive because there are too few opportunities for advancement? Or is it stereotyping and women are only perceived as being overly aggressive? Is there a double standard at work? Research on gender stereotyping from Catalyst suggests that no matter how women choose to lead, they are perceived as never just right. Whats more, the group found, women must work twice as hard as men to achieve the same level of recognition and prove they can lead. If women business leaders act consistent with gender stereotypes, they are considered too soft, the group found in a 2007 study. If they go against gender stereotypes, they are considered too tough. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image David Kadlubowski for The New York Times Michelle Cirocco, left, and Donna Kent of Televerde, a company in Phoenixthat set up call centers at a state prison. Women are trying to figure out the magical keys to the kingdom, said Laura Steck, president of the Growth and Leadership Center in Sunnyvale, Calif., and an executive leadership coach. Women feel they have to be aggressive to be promoted, she said, and then they keep it up. Then, suddenly, they see the need to be collegial and collaborative instead of competitive. Cleo Lepori-Costello, a vice president at a Silicon Valley software company, came to the center for training. She got off to a bumpy start when she stormed into her new role like a bull in a china shop, Ms. Steck said. In gathering feedback about Ms. Lepori-Costello, Ms. Steck heard comments like: Cleo is good at getting things done but may have come on too strong in the beginning. She didnt read the different cultural unspoken rules like she could have. So Ms. Steck and Kent Kaufman, another coach at the center, began a one-year, once-a-weekindividual coaching program. It included role-playing and monthly group discussions with other female executives who acknowledged that they also had major blind spots about being politic at work. (The group was once nicknamed the Bully Broads.) When she came to the center, Ms. Lepori-Costello said, she thought her colleagues were not initially open to her ideas. Through coaching and conflict role-playing, she came to realize that her behavior was perhaps too much overkill and that she was not always attending to all the people around her. Joel H. Neuman, a researcher at the State University of New York at New Paltz, says most aggressive behavior at work is influenced by a number of factors associated with the bullies, victims and the situations in which they work. This would include issues related to frustration, personality traits, perceptions of unfair treatment, and an assortment of stresses and strains associated with todays leaner and meaner work settings,, he said. Mr. Neuman and his colleague Loraleigh Keashly of Wayne State University have developed a questionnaire to identify the full range of behaviors that can constitute bullying, which could help companies uncover problems that largely go unreported. Bullying involves verbal or psychological forms of aggressive (hostile) behavior that persists for six months or longer. Their 29 questions include: Over the last 12 months, have you regularly: been glared at in a hostile manner, been given the silent treatment, been treated in a rude or disrespectful manner, or had others fail to deny false rumors about you? The Workplace Bullying Institute says that 37 percent of workers have been bullied. Yet many employers ignore the problem, which hits the bottom line in turnover, health care and productivity costs, the institute says. Litigation is rare, the institute says, because there is no directly applicable law to cite and the costs are high. Two Canadianresearchers recently set out to examine the bullying that pits women against women. They found that some women may sabotage one another because they feel that helping their female co-workers could jeopardize their own careers. One of the researchers, Grace Lau, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Waterloo, said the goal was to encourage women to help one another. She said: How? One way we predicted would be to remind women that they are members of the same group. We believe that a sense of pride in womens accomplishments is important in getting women to help one another, Ms. Lau said. To have this sense of pride, women need to be aware of their shared identity as women. In the workplace, however, it is unlikely that women will constantly think of themselves as members of one group, she said. They will more likely see themselves as individuals, as they are judged by their performance. As a result, women may not feel a need to help one another,, she said. They may even feel that in order to get ahead, they need to bully their co-workers by withholding information like promotion opportunities, and that women are easier to bully than men because women are supposedly less tough than men. Skip to next paragraph WHAT better place to be a bully than in a prison? Even so, that is exactly where Televerde, a company in Phoenix that specializes in generating sales leads and market insight for high-tech companies, set up shop. About 13 years ago, the company created four call centers in the Arizona state prison in Perryville, employing 250 inmates (out of 3,000). Through immersion training, mentoring and working with real-world clients, these women can overcome their difficult circumstances, said Donna Kent, senior vice president at Televerde. Often, they will win over bullies and we see the whole thing transform. Thats what gives us inspiration and our clients inspiration. TODAY, about half of Televerdescorporate office is made up of graduates from Perryville, including Michelle Cirocco, the director of sales operations. She has seen how women treat one another in other settings and she thinks the root cause is that women are taught to fight with one another for attention at an early age. Were competing with our sisters for dads attention, or for our brothers attention, Ms. Cirocco said. And then we go on in school and were competing for our teachers attention. Were competing to be on the sports team or the cheer squad. To be sure, the Televerde experience is not for every inmate, and those who are in it still must work hard to maintain a highly competitive position. As we get into the corporate world, Ms. Cirocco added, were taught or were led to believe that we dont get ahead because of men. But, we really dont get ahead because of ourselves. Instead of building each other up and showcasing each other, were constantly tearing each other down.Televerde reversed that attitude in Perryville, Ms. Cirocco said, by encouraging women to work for a common cause, much like the environment envisioned by the Canadian researchers. It becomes a very nurturing environment, Ms. Cirocco said. You have all these women who become your friends, and you are personally invested in their success. Everyone wants everyone to get out, to go on to have a good healthy life. If the level of support found at Televerde were found elsewhere, Ms. Klaus said, it would solve a lot of problems. The time has come, she said, for us to really deal with this relationship that women have to women, because it truly is preventing us from being as successful in the workplace as we want to be and should be. Weve got enough obstacles; we dont need to pile on any more. >To gameface, Thanks. Terrific. more

Resolved Question: Do you know much about media companies and advertising?

Is my understanding of all of this correct? Please tell me what I have wrong. Also please inform me of anything further regarding what I'm talking about. Advertising agencies have to use media companies. They need them, because a media company is essentially the owner of some form of medium- which is the vehicle for the advertising agency's client's advert. Now, take for example a media company that publishes a newspaper. We will call it ABC. So am I right to say that ABC owns this paper? ABC has different departments in their organisation. One part is the editor. We will call him John. John is in charge of deciding what things are written about in the paper. That is, he decides what news articles go in there, what adverts go in there, and what advertorials go in there. Now another department within ABC is the journalists, who are the people who write the news articles, about anything they wish. Another department is the publishing team, who actually print the newspaper. Another department is the team who try and find clients to advertise in the herald. And another department is booking the adds and scheduling the ads, whatever that means. So am I right to say the media companies are a big part of advertising? Advertisers have nowhere to advertise without them. MAIN QUESTION: Do media companies have an advertising team of their own? That is, do they create the ads for their clients (some business) or does an advertising agency make an ad for a company and then that agency goes to the media company, whether it be a magazine, a radio station, or a tv channel? more

Resolved Question: Hidden agendas of employment agencies?

Why do temping agencies advertise vacancies in local newspapers or with Jobcentreplus, etc, when the vacancies can easily be filled by their registered clients? For example, a position for a Warehouse Operative was recently advertised in a local newspaper. I'm sure the agency has plenty of registered clients who could easily fill that position. Could it be just a ploy to get more people on their books so that they can impress potential clients (employers) with how many job hunters they have registered with them. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Should I apply for a different job at a company that rejected me for another position?

My previous job was with a recruitment advertising agency in a role that dealt with both recruitment and client services. Last month, I applied for a position at a local company. I went through a phone screen, sent a follow up email, and was told that they had better suited candidates. Today, I found another position with them in a different role (I was rejected from a client services position; this one is for a recruiter.) Since it is also a match to my background, I thought I would apply. Should I? Do I state in my cover letter that I was rejected for a different position? more

Resolved Question: Is it better to apply for a job advertised on a company's website or to go through a recruitment agent?

I saw a temp job advertised on a job board by a specialist (HR industry) recruitment agency. They'd changed the title slightly, but by looking at the skills being asked for / doing a bit of detective work, I was able to locate what was obviously the same job on the website of the client company (a very big one) only on a pemanent basis. I assume they must be looking for someone as a temp until they fill the slot? I'd actually be interested in either as I was recently made redundant. I know that many companies in my sector, and especially in London, prefer to use recruitment agents, despite there being a fee (ironic given I'm in HR). My question is, were I to post my CV directly to the company's website, is it less likely to be looked at than if a recruitment consultant put me forward? Do companies genuinely use their own recruitment sites at all or are they there "for show"? I've only ever made career moves with agencies to date and it seems the only way to get a job in London ...Perfect CV: thanks for your honesty. Recruiters are usually keen to put me forward for roles after meeting/talking to me: I come across well at interview, so they expand on my CV. However,I had a bad experience with one last year, hence my trepidation: this guy found my CV online, called me at work (he clearly googled it and called reception - very bad practice) then submitted my CV, which was a near perfect match for quite a niche HR role. After a couple of weeks he told me that I hadn't got through for interview. However, in the interim I had a couple of very professional agents, who I'd met, signed up with formally and trusted, call me re: the same role. Both were surprised to hear I hadn't got through, and suspected that this guy might not be on said company's contracted agencies list. She explained that as I'd already been put forward by this guy, I wouldn't be able to get the job unless it was through him, as he'd introduced me. You have to be careful ...Oh I just clicked - PSL means what I've called contracted agencies, right? Preferred Supplier List? (I'm in L&D, hence my unfamiliarity with recruitment jargon). more

Resolved Question: Help me with an online college class dilemma!?

Okay here's the deal. I am taking an online college course and my teacher is a complete idiot. I am not saying this because I do not like her or anything like that, but more than once I have proved her wrong along with nearly ever other person in my class. She always grades my papers wrong and has to redo them after she realizes it and then she will submit something to me saying that she is sorry but will still have to take points off because it is a state run online college course and it will look as if she is "giving me a break". Whatever that means, because I really don't know. Well I recently turned in this quiz listed below and she gave me a grade of 80. This is not a bad grade I know, but I know the answers I submitted were right as I researched and asked others employed in the profession if my answers were correct. I would like to know your answers and I made a deal with her that if I can get at least 10 other people that do not know my initial answers to the quiz to answer the questions the same way that I did, she will give me a full grade. So thanks in advance! The quiz is about graphic design, marketing, sales, and advertising. 1. What are the differences between a “strategy” and a “tactic” in advertising? 2. What is an SMP? Why is it important? 3. What is “Positioning?” How does an agency help their client achieve this? 4. How does an independent contractor know how much to charge for services provided to clients? 6. Write a description of a real or made-up example ofGuerrillaa marketing. 7. Describe one typical section usually found in the written agreement between the client and the agency (Hint: the “Proposal” document and the “Terms and Conditions” document will combine to create the written agreement which will be signed by both the client and agency) 8. How would you handle the difficult situation below? Your client says you are taking too long to complete the work they asked for. You think they do not understand the process, particularly since there were several change orders to deal with. 9. What kind of problems sometimes come up within the agencies internal management? – How can they be solved? 10. Why is it important that problems within the creative team environment be solved? more

Resolved Question: What would be the best way to find a mentor in my industry? (Advertising / Marketing)?

I've been working in the advertising / marketing industry for a few years now (been on the client, website, and agency sides of the biz). I really want to put together a time line or "game plan" for my career. My father is a senior manager at a financial institution, and he recommends finding a mentor who is in a position that I aim to achieve. Most of my work has been in the digital (online) space. Right now the (abbreviated) plan is: to gain a strong grasp of all mediums, get an MBA from a top-30 business school, and eventually end up as a Product Manager or CMO for a fortune500 company. I was thinking of placing an ad on CraigsList or LinkedIn, but don't know how best to word something like this, or even if those places would be good to use -- where do successful marketing / advertising professionals frequent? :) more

I know that large, national ad agencies/ media buyers would be interested in purchasing ads (for their clients) in the newspaper I work for. I am new to the business, but I know that my newspaper has indeed relied on national ad agencies/ media buyers for much of its ad revenue in the past (and still does). Is it okay for me, as an ad rep, to contact ad agencies directly to try to convince them to spend more of their client's ad dollars with my particular media? more
