Resolved Question: What should I be learning for web design?

I am currently attending the University of Alabama, majoring in Digital Media and Advertising. I have learned a lot about programs like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, but I was recently turned down for a job because I was not familiar with Flash. I would like to teach myself Flash, and some web coding, however, the last web coding class I took was in 2005, and I learned basic HTML. I've kinda been out of the loop as far as coding since then, so I need to know what type I should teach myself. I was reading on Wikipedia, and it seems that HTML 5 may be the new standard, but I figure that there is someone out there MUCH more knowledgeable on this topic than me. I just need some direction as to which types of coding I need to familiarize myself with to be able to build a more interactive, modern website than the ones I know how to make with simple HTML.I am not concerned with the difficulty of learning, so please don't exclude suggestions because I am out-of-date or a beginner. I have self-taught myself much of the Adobe Suite, and HTML. I am very dedicated to being a quality graphic designer, and being able to create stunning websites, so I am more than willing to put in lots of time to learn what I need to know. more

Voting Question: How can I pick my college major?

I am currently going to a community college in Texas and I am trying to decide my college major. Obviously, unless its a technical field, your major doesn't matter as much as your experience does, and I'm prepared to continue my education passed a Bachelors (because I know I'll have to in the end). I went through my course catalog, and highlighted every class I saw to be interesting. Then, from there, I looked at the correlating department to see where those classes were organized; therefore, I could limit my selections and make it less difficult for myself. After compiling my classes, I noticed that most of my classes selected were art oriented- which is surprising to me, as I was never a "good" drawer (but, only through little practice and discouragement from poor teachers). In order from most classes to least: Digital Design (Graphic Design, Web Design/Programming, Animation, Digital Video, etc.) Communications/English (Radio/TV/Electronic Media) Fine Arts (Drawing, Painting, Sculpting) Advertising/Business Game Development/Computer Programming Humanities/Philosophy Language At the end, I'm clear about my objectives; I'd like to learn several languages and learn about cultures, but they will probably be elective classes I will take instead of majors. However, I'm at a cross roads between the first 4, and even lesser so the 5th selection. I'd like a degree that can open up a multitude of jobs/careers down the road, and I think Game Development wouldn't have a lot of breathing room for me in the future; I'd be fine in that industry, but I'd like to possibly move outwards too (I could be wrong in this). And the Fine Arts are simply classes in drawing, design, and photography; classes to better my skills and as an introductory to the Digital Design classes. So, that probably wouldn't be a major. I'd only want to learn programming as a side skill to open up other opportunities, or to learn it to create things myself. So I can see Game Development as a future degree. I'd like to find a way to combine these three in the best way possible, or the best degree for me in the future: Design, Advertising/Business and/or Communications. I feel as so that would be best for me and my future, but I have no clue how to go about it as a major, let alone what schools to go to. And I gravitated towards Business as I feel as so that would be an important asset to have in the business world. The good thing is, I'm finishing my basics at community college, and I'm going to transfer out; so, I have plenty of schools to choose from in the nation. So basically, here's my major: What major do you think I should have? Should I do a combination of major/minor, or double major? And what are possibly the best schools to go to for my direction? Thanks. And sorry for the length. The Ugly Blunt Truth: I appreciate you for reading the topic of question, and nothing else. more

Resolved Question: Anyone else wake up to no TV channels this morning?

Our TV region is undergoing the digital switch over, Granada region is the largest switch over so far. Advance publicity advised that it would be simple. Since the 4th November this is the 3rd time we have had to re-tune digital equipment, and there are stories of people loosing channels or having the regional TV they watch changed. We were informed last night that another re-tune is required, so this morning switch on TV and.....nothing. Hopefully it will be sorted later, but it's not the simple process that is being advertised. Can you imagine the media outrage when it happens in the south east?Micheal; S4C is channel 4 in Welsh. Resolved Question: my life seems depressed but doctors say I'm not depressed, whats wrong!?

for over 7 years now ive been struggling to find something that moves my heart to a point where I can wake up with the desire to do that particular thing regardless of anything else. I know that what I am expecting is not way off base because I remember feeling like that when I was young(10-13 years old). I've always been intrigued by how things work, had a great childhood in a great school. I always tend to be self taught and always searching for something more. over the last 7 years I've gone through several states of mind concerning why I feel so empty if I have a good, healthy, stable life with a loving family, believe in god(not religion) and happen to be talented in several fields. First I thought that I wasnt putting much effort in, so I tried harder..eventually nothing changed so I thought maybe I was focusing on the wrong activity...I ended up learning tons of stuff about people, me, and the world...however I still feel empty. so I turned to a doctor, perhaps I suffer depression or something similar. I was tested and nothing, i'm ok. I've always been good at arts, sports and physics. I began studying industrial design but later transfered to industrial engineering because I felt I needed more of a challenge involving math in my carrer. along side my studies I painted and show my work in art galleries, I played soccer. I designed a website just for fun and then people began calling requesting my web design skills, later my graphic design skills, then I ended up programming software. with that money I bought a camera and ended up learning photography. Later, feeling empty, I changed carrers again moving on to mechatronich engineering to spice things up a little bit more. There I learned electronics, mechanics and other stuff. with this I built an animatronic snowman to decorate my house in chirstmas. several months ago I was called by a multinational advertising company offering me a job regardless of me being in college still. This position required me to desing advertising strategies in digital media. the list goes on, the point is that I've had a wonderful and priviledged life but I feel empty. I wake up in the morning and I go on just driven by the hope that perhaps today I will find something that makes me passionate. I feel full of energy and willpower just about to explode, I want to use all that I've learned and make a change, make money but I just cant find something that makes me passioante. ]Im tired of trying out things just to see if they make me feel something...so far Ive done this and all ive got is beeing good at a lot of things, but not really good (dont care if im not really good, just happy to do it!) at anything. any opinions, insights, comments are welcome!youre right wtfoff, I used the phrase "got tested" as a summary for this case. just to keep this short and dont make an already long story, boring. thanks for your comments ;) more

Resolved Question: Is there a way to get Commercial Radio airtime without being signed to a Major label?

Is there a way to get Commercial Radio airtime without being signed to a Major label? If you have accomplished this how did you do it? I know there are a lot of artist promotional companies out there and most of their packages which include commercial radio or TV start at about 25K. I’m thinking there must be another way for good bands to get the media attention they deserve without having to sell a kidney or get arrested for streaking during a show, LOL! Honestly, can Indie Bands really compete with the Major labels mega-buck advertising power and grid lock control of commercial radio? Is getting the attention of a Major Label the only way a band can truly be successful? How much money are you investing each month into the success of your band versus what you are getting back from gigs, CD sales, and royalties from digital download vendors? Are your fans paying you to make music or are you paying your fans to listen to your music, LOL! Let’s hear what’s on your minds! more

Resolved Question: WHAT ABOUT THE SPYWARE LAWSUIT YAHOO?

The new lawsuit (PDF) accuses the online giant of some truly seedy advertising activity that falls under the general heading of "syndication fraud." The case was filed in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey and names Crafts by Veronica as the class representative. Crafts by Veronica has purchased advertising exposure from Yahoo in the past, but now claims that much of that exposure came through spyware, typosquatting, and parked domains—none of which qualify as "popular, high-quality sites" that Yahoo advertisers were promised. The lawsuit alleges that many of the reported problems have to do with Yahoo's syndication network, a group of partner companies that take ads from Yahoo and display them on their own sites. Although many of these partners are reputable media companies, several of them are firms like Intermix and Direct Revenue, firms investigated as spyware purveyors by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Why would Yahoo remain in partnership with such companies? It's simple—the relationship is highly lucrative. Spyware advertising is far cheaper to offer than pay-per-click advertising on reputable websites, and the lawsuits alleges that Yahoo bills its advertising customers at higher rates, promises them good exposure, but then places ads with spyware providers at a fraction of its usual cost. This results in large profits for Yahoo, but generates few useful leads for the advertiser. The lawsuit describes the practice this way: "By placing Class Members' ads into illegal platforms such as spyware programs, Defendants wrongfully collect high search engine advertising fees for ads that are actually shown in contexts that are worth far less, if anything. It is well known that spyware advertising is much cheaper than search engine advertising. ... But when Defendants and their Syndication Partners place Class Members' ads into spyware, they continue to charge Class Members full price for these ads, and pocketing the difference between the high fees Class Members pay and the low cost of providing spyware-delivered advertising." A second allegation concerns typosquatting web sites, where Yahoo is accused of placing ads. Again, advertisers were promised that their message would be displayed in "popular, high-quality sites" and typosquatted domains can hardly be considered that. Advertisers are still being billed at the same rate, however, as if their ads were appearing on the Washington Post's website. "Particularly egregious is that Defendants even charge their advertising customers for ads shown on typosquatting web sites targeting those customers' own names. Take for example Yahoo's advertising customer Expedia.com. A user intending to visit the Expedia web site might mistype it as 'expedai.com.' At 'expedai.com,' the user sees a list of ads provided by Defendants, including an ad for Expedia, along with other customers of Defendants. If the user clicks the Expedia ad, the user is taken to the true Expedia site, which is where he or she wanted to go in the first place—without clicking an Expedia ad—and Expedia has to pay defendants a PPC [pay-per-click] fee." Finally, the suit alleges that Yahoo places some of its ads in parked domains, which "appear if users incorrectly guess, mis-remember or otherwise mistype a domain name." Such advertising can hardly be considered "targeted," but advertisers are billed as though it were. The suit claims that most of these activities occurred through Yahoo's network of affiliates, but that Yahoo was aware of the problems this created. This isn't the first time that Yahoo has been accused of partnering with dodgy companies, either. Last year, Ben Edelman published a detailed look inside Yahoo's connections with various alleged spyware providers. Lawsuits over online advertising have grown in frequency over the last few years as the new medium has become increasingly important. Google recently paid almost US$90 million recently to settle a click fraud case, and Yahoo is now facing several lawsuits accusing it of both click fraud and syndication fraud. Will such cases make buyers more wary about paying large sums for online advertising? Perhaps, but the market is currently booming. These cases do suggest, though, that the digital age still has used for ancient wisdom: caveat emptor. more

Voting Question: I need some Degree Help!?!?

Im looking at going to school in the fall although not for sure since im not sure how much help i can get. My real question is i have no idea where to go or what to go for. I thought about going to Full Sail for their recording arts or music business but that is way to pricey for me. I live in ohio currently so local would be nicer, but not needed. I have a passion for digital media. Mainly music, i love recording etc. But i also would love to pick up some photography and video editing not a ton just enough to know basic manipulation etc. So what degree would envelop these 3 things the most. I know their are electives and such but im trying to keep it simple. i was thinking a recording arts or music with a minor in advertising for the video and image stuff? what are your thoughts!Frivilous teenage things! Have you watched TV they all take graphic design and audio. If you even have a family youve taken a picture and wanted it to look good. In 2003, lawsuits were charged against Apple, complaining that the batteries lasted for shorter lengths of time than said and that the batteries slowy lost power over time and decreasing the battery life even more. The lawsuit was setteled and for people who were involved got $50 store credit, or battery change. iPods have been criticized for their short life-span and fragile hard drives, It concluded that some models were more durable than others. •iPods have many different size compbaliltiy ranging from 512MB to 160GB, that’s 250 songs to 40,000 songs more

Resolved Question: Challenge: To turn off your tv for a month? You are being brainwashed?

Can you do it? If you accept my challenge, please email me in a month and tell me of your accomplishment. Not only are the messages on tv getting everyone to conform into the same way of thinking, the way they want you to think. But through modern technology there is a lot more to it. Have you even wondered for a second why the government has spent billions on giving you a better television picture through the digital switch? At least 200 million tv's needed the converter box. They gladly gave away $40 vouchers for anyone that needed it. 40X200 million, not to mention all of the media advertising about the swith. You do the math, they must really want you to watch tv. Look at these videos and tell me what you think.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09XNHrGlTB0&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltX6X0TFNDg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6lu6KIZ0CA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQD9xkzmVdE&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq4eL-9PUn8 more

Resolved Question: Male Bashing on TV article please if someone can summary the article!!?

Warning for our male readers: The following article contains big words and complex sentences. It might be a good idea to have a woman nearby to explain it to you. It's been a hard day. Your assistant at work is out with the flu and there is another deadline fast approaching. Your wife is at a business conference, so you have to pick up your son at daycare, make dinner, clean the kitchen, do a load of laundry, and get Junior to bed before you can settle down on the sofa with those reports you still need to go over. Perhaps a little comedy will make the work more bearable, you think, so you turn on CBS's Monday night comedies: King of Queens, Yes, Dear, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Still Standing. Over the next two hours, you see four male lead characters who are nothing like you. These men are selfish and lazy, inconsiderate husbands and poor parents. And the commercials in between aren't any better. Among them: A feminine hygiene ad: Two women are traveling down a lovely country road, laughing and having a great time. But wait. One of them needs to check the freshness of her mini-pad, and, apparently, the next rest area is six states away. A woman's voice-over interjects, "It's obvious that the interstate system was designed by men." A digital camera ad: A young husband walks through a grocery store, trying to match photos in his hand with items on the shelves. Cut to his wife in the kitchen, snapping digital pictures of all the items in the pantry so that hubby won't screw up the shopping. A family game ad: A dorky guy and beautiful woman are playing Trivial Pursuit. He asks her, "How much does the average man's brain weigh?" Her answer: "Not much." A wine ad: A group of women are sitting around the patio of a beach house, drinking a blush wine. Their boyfriends approach, but are denied refreshment until they have "earned" it by building a sand statue of David. Welcome to the new comic image of men on tv: incompetence at its worst. Where television used to feature wise and wonderful fathers and husbands, today's comedies and ads often feature bumbling husbands and inept, uninvolved fathers. On Still Standing, Bill (Mark Addy) embarrasses his wife Judy (Jamie Gertz) so badly in front of her reading group, that she is dropped from the group. On Everybody Loves Raymond, Raymond (Ray Romano) must choose between bathing the twin boys or helping his daughter with her homework. He begrudgingly agrees to assist his daughter, for whom he is no help whatsoever. CBS is not the only guilty party. ABC's My Wife and Kids and According to Jim, Fox's The Bernie Mac Show, The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, and (the recently cancelled) Titus, and the WB's Reba also feature women who are better organized and possess better relational skills than their male counterparts. While most television dramas tend to avoid gender stereotypes, as these undermine "realism," comic portrayals of men have become increasingly negative. The trend is so noticeable that it has been criticized by men's rights groups and some television critics. It has also been studied by academicians Dr. Katherine Young and Paul Nathanson in their book, Spreading Misandry: The Teaching of Contempt for Men in Popular Culture. Young and Nathanson argue that in addition to being portrayed as generally unintelligent, men are ridiculed, rejected, and physically abused in the media. Such behavior, they suggest, "would never be acceptable if directed at women." Evidence of this pattern is found in a 2001 survey of 1,000 adults conducted by the Advertising Standards Association in Great Britain, which found that 2/3 of respondents thought that women featured in advertisements were "intelligent, assertive, and caring," while the men were "pathetic and silly." The number of respondents who thought men were depicted as "intelligent" was a paltry 14%. (While these figures apply to the United Kingdom, comparable advertisements air in the U.S.) Some feminists might argue that, for decades, women on tv looked mindless, and that turnabout is fair play. True, many women characters through the years have had little more to do than look after their families. From the prim housewife whose only means of control over her children was, "Wait till your father gets home!" to the dutiful housewife whose husband declares, "My wife: I think I'll keep her," women in the '50s and '60s were often subservient. (This generalization leaves out the unusual someone like Donna Reed, who produced her own show, on which she was not subservient.) Then, during the "sexual revolution," tv began to feature independent women who could take care of themselves (Mary and Rhoda on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Julia, Alice and Flo on Alice, Louise and Florence on The Jeffersons). So now, 30 years later, you'd think that maybe we'd have come to some parity. Not even. Granted, men still dominate television, from the newsroom to primetime. And men do plenty on theiMy question is can someone summary this article like what actually is the author trying to say what his good point and what his weak point. how can we realted taht in our life. pleaseeeeee more

Resolved Question: What major should I pick for a music/entertainment publicist career?

I'm starting university this year to complete the Communications and Media Studies degree, and I eventually want to become a music or entertainment publicist. I have a keen interest in the media and writing, and the degree requires a 'specialist stream' to be chosen (either advertising/marketing, digital communication, journalism or screen studies). I would love to do journalism, but would the advertising & marketing stream be more suitable for my career path? more

Resolved Question: deviantart's policy? concerns?

when they ask you to agree to their submission policy, thats probably the only terms and agreements on a website that ive actually read through. one thing concerned me: "3. License To Use Artist Materials. As and when Artist Materials are uploaded to the deviantART Site(s), Artist grants to deviantART a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to do the following things during the Term: a) to prepare and encode Artist Materials or any part of them for digital or analog transmission, manipulation and exhibition in any format and by any means now known or not yet known or invented; b) to display, copy, reproduce, exhibit, publicly perform, broadcast, rebroadcast, transmit, retransmit, distribute through any electronic means (including analog and digital) or other means, and electronically or otherwise publish any or all of the Artist Materials, including any part of them, and to include them in compilations for publication, by any and all means and media now known or not yet known or invented ; c) to modify, adapt, change or otherwise alter the Artist Materials (e.g., change the size) and use the Artist Materials as described in Section 3(b); and d) the right to sublicense to any other person or company any of the licensed rights in the Artist Materials, or any part of them, subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement. e) Artist acknowledges that Artist will not have any right, title, or interest in any other materials with which Artist Materials may be combined or into which all or any portion of Artist Materials may be incorporated. f) During the Term, deviantART's licenses under this Agreement include the right to use any part of the Artist Materials in the promotion, advertising or marketing of the DeviantART Sites. g) As used in this Agreement, the term "Artist Materials" means any content uploaded to the deviantART Site(s) which may include without limitation Artist's name(s) (including professional names), trademarks, trade names, likenesses, photographs, biographical materials, audio-visual materials, artwork, liner notes, and other graphical, textual, video, film or audio materials and any and all "skins," computer-generated images or other artwork or images that Artist submits to deviantART in any medium or format whatsoever." the chance, i know, is slim, but i prior to that, they claim that the artist retains the rights to their work at all time. however, it appears that they claim that they can also use your work, which concerns me. enough people use the website to the point where enough people must be comfortable with these conditions. this is the url to the agreement: http://www.deviantart.com/submit/agree more

It is relatively cheap comparing to advertising in media and allows a business to expand into new markets without huge costs. Cost of setting up a website depends from type and size of the website. The business will need to choose between building its website itself or hiring web designers. Using a web designer can be expensive, but they have a better knowledge of what works on the web and build a more effective and more safety websites using the latest techniques. A website can break down geographical barriers and create new ways of communication. The Internet gives smaller businesses a relatively low cost strategy for competing on the same online terms as much larger competitors. Using a web appearance helps to reach into a new areas which may not normally be able to reach because of limited capital and expand markets more cost-effectively. Resolved Question: I need like 50 more words to this essay...can you help me?

I believe that my education here at The New York Institute of Technology teachings will give me an opportunity to promote, advertise, and to even change peoples lives for the better in the field of Communication Arts. Communication Arts is like a cancer, it spreads world wide, just like this years November 4th Election, because change will come. When I said C.A. is like cancer, I really mean it is like a cancer, because it could go from one country to the next. Communication Arts is a field with 10+ options to choose from. These 10+ options that the Communication Arts field has to offer includes: advertising, audio recording and radio, digital film, media studies, print and electronic journalism, public relations, corporate and documentary video, television production, web design and computer graphics. Communication Artist are responsible for letting the public know the new trends in fashion, whats going on behind closed doors in the government, and the latest in entertainment. A communication artist is also responsible for putting other businesses, or services out there. A Communication Artist can develop a web page or commercial for the next Civil Engineerer, or the latest rap or hip hop artist. One of my accomplishments that I am most proud of is my social skills, because that is not an easy thing to overcome. It is so hard; it’s harder then having a baby and I am a dude. In college, as I learn of the teachings that NYIT has to offer me, I plan to write up a business plan, and go from the bottom up. Resolved Question: Can someone please recommend a SATA hard disk for me to buy?

I'm looking to buy a new HD for my desktop PC to replace my existing system drive (C drive), as HD's nowadays are a lot faster, larger and cheaper than when I built the PC back in 2004. The computer is running with 3.2 MHz Intel processor and Asus P4C800-E Deluxe mobo, 3 GB RAM. The mobo takes SATA and EIDE hard drives. Can anyone recommend a SATA HD I should look out for, on which I would be using for operating system and for installing software (it means reinstalling OS and software). I'll be using the system for processor intensive applications (video editing, games, etc) -- note, I already have extra drives for storing data, media and on which I do my video encoding. I can only seem to find SATA II drives on the market -- are those backwards compaitible with SATA I mobos? I have my eyes set on Western Digital but they seem to have three families in terms of performance, called Green, Blue and Black. Their website is vague. The "Green" drives look appealing as they are advertised as quiet and economical on power. Has anyone used those, and is speed compromised to acheive these environmental benefits? Also what would be a recommened size before speed starts to get compromised noticeably? My current system/software drive is 160 GB. I'd like my new drive to be bigger to install more software but not too big that the drive runs slower. more

Resolved Question: Did anyone ever get hired by using a online job search engine?

I just graduated from college and am working as a waitress, and I wish I can find a job that is related in my field so I can make some real money (Digital Media and Broadcasting), I've been applying online through a lot of job search engines such as Monster, yahoo hotjobs, etc., and I was wondering do they really look at your resume and application when you send it out, or is it just a complete waste of time? How would I show the company advertising for the position that I am very interested in the job without being a nuisance? It seems today everything is done through the internet, and sometimes I wonder if it is even worth emailing the company or mailing them my resume? I would much rather call or show up at the place and show that I'm very interested, because it seems like any person can apply too at the same time. Anyone have any tips from experience that they would like to share? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: HELP: Advertising... Is it more of an Arts major? Chances of working in a magazine???

I'm doing an AA in Advertising this Fall at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Well, I know it's an art college so the program must've been leaning more towards the artistic side. But I just want to double check. Any opinion? I want to delve more into the creative side, NOT the business aspects (although I know one of the foundation classes has something to do with marketing). In general, does an Advertising major have anything to do with Broadcast Journalism? Do I still have a shot of working in magazines as a feature writer/editor aside from being an art director? I already hold an AA in Screenwriting for Film, TV & Digital Media, so if I combine this with the degree I get in Advertising, do I have a chance of working in a magazine (or moreover, launching my own magazine)? more
