Resolved Question: Do Those Yelling "Socialism" Know what It is or WHO is forcing it on them?

The notion of more - not less - corporate involvement in our electoral process is scary indeed, and the Republican Party money-raisers are already gearing up for the "big bucks."Obey has been working on campaign finance reform since the Nixon years, and he just introduced the "Let the People Decide Clean Campaign Act" in the House of Representatives. Obey said, "Corporations have never been people. They don't vote [yet], they don't get drafted, they don't get jury duty, didn't sign the Constitution - heck, some of them hardly even pay taxes in the United States! But the Supreme Court seems to think they should be free to spend unlimited money on political advertising with almost no accountability whatsoever."It's a fact that one of the largest stockholders in Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. (Fox News and the Wall Street Journal) is billionaire Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. Murdoch himself just acquired U.S. citizenship in 1985 to allow him to purchase many American television stations. Anyone who thinks that Murdoch's News Corp. will not take an active role in our elections hasn't been paying attention. Do we really want a Saudi oil prince and an Australian press baron to determine who gets the big campaign dollars (you can sign a petition and become a citizen co-sponsor of Obey's bill online) http://fightingbob.com/article.cfm?articleID=1130 more

Resolved Question: Is there anyone out there who has any additional questions about AVON?

I have had fun selling Avon. It is so easy. All the advertising is handled by AVON so most of it is already done. It is only $10.00 to sign up and that gets you an online web page and 10 books. You have a campaign every 2 weeks. The first 4 weeks you get 40% off your own product no matter how much you sell. Try the skin care regimens and makeup for yourself to be better able to help your customers. I personally have a friend that helps me by selling to people where she works. I trade with her: her time for free product and it works for us. If you would like to sign up or have any additional questions write to me at help.me.rhonda@live.com.There is a new makeup that is coming out in Campaign 7...we are in campaign now. It is Smooth Minerals but in a pressed foundation. Medium coverage with a natural luminous finish but without the mess for the girl on the go. Keep your eyes peeled in a month it will be on my website at www.rhondavelasquez.avonrepresentative.com more

Resolved Question: How do I get my businesses website on page 1 of google?

I've recently taken over a business and the old owners never really did any web advertising, despite being an online store! I'm trying to bump my website up the google rankings - currently, when you search 'children's wedding favours' (which I sell) I don't come anywhere close...I have yet to find myself on a google search! Has anyone got any tips on how to improve this? I'm just about to start a google adwords campaign and am having a new website made by a company that apparently are quite good at optimising your website, but is there anything more I can do? My website is www.eventsmiles.co.uk if that helps at all! more

Resolved Question: A tricky campaign, can you be the genius to solve it?

ok heres the problem. a classy tapas bar, (canas y tapas-check it out online) needs toattract students. one, students have a pre-consumption about the price-need to highlight the fact its not as expensive as it looks. Two, up-sell the spainish atmosphere as the idle hang out for students. tricky you say. how do you change perceptions and attract this particular market with a catchy strapline, or clever campaign? its a dummy breif for aschool project, but i want to get an amazing grade so i can use it to show to some people in an advertising agencie im interested in working for, seeming as i have zero portfolio. thanks guys, top help. :) more

Resolved Question: i want to sue omegle?

i obviously am too young to do it, being only fifteen. however, the site is dispicable. their advertising campaign is, ''talk to strangers!'' and there is a quote that says: Chats are completely anonymous, although there is nothing to stop you from revealing personal details if you would like. What kind of world is this? The main number of females that use it are below the age of 18, and the majority of males are older, college level, talking about wanting sex and being horny! There has to be a way to sue them. (They have no page warning about the dangers of online chats) Is there any way to make this possible? more

Voting Question: What do you think of my persuasive argument writing piece?

It's supposed to be a feature article.. i think it sucks ...and i think my english teacher is going to despise it too. here it is:Stop Commercialism now How many times have you surfed on the internet and not found yourself to come across many ads that have popped up on the page you were on or are on? Many advertisers are profiting from what reels us in, which are these many ads you hear or see on the TV, radio, internet, etc. All in all, it’s a two-sided affair. Say you are just checking your email and you see a thousand emails. Possibly, half of those are spam from those penny-pinchers out to get you and your money. So what should you do about this? Well, you have one of two options being the check all and delete button or moving all that unnecessary junk to the spam folder where it belongs and needs to stay. Commercialism is vastly becoming a problem not a success as many assume it to be. Studies show that 67% of teens buy items online and 37% of children do. Commercialism attacks the adolescent ages because they figure we are susceptible to any commerce that they are willing to throw at us. Also, many individuals assume this to be a more convenient way of purchasing anything and it being a faster way. That may be, but how do you know you are actually getting what you paid for? You’re wasting your precious time behind a glass screen. Purchase the more effective way, by going out into stores and getting what you need. Many politicians use commerce for their campaigns. You know those TV ads that always contradict that you need to vote for so and so for president instead of the other guy because he did whatever? This is a way of a scam to get money out of your pockets and into their hands. These ads are the ones that are appealing to hear or see, just an easier way to pull you in. Commercialism also costs too much money. Most of which is probably our tax dollars. The price goes up for a product if realized that it makes a certain individual sustain a cool image by using it or buying it. Many of these can be misleading, so any time you are gullible to believe one you are giving away money that could be used for something more important. Advertising takes up a lot of one’s time. We only have one life to live right? The average American spends at least 60 minutes reading, hearing or even watching ads on the television, radio, in magazines, etc. By the time that person comes of old age, 4 years of their life will be basically deducted away from under their feet. Some say that we are immune, too smart, and too savvy to fall for such. If so were true, we wouldn’t know so much of certain brand names, dress a certain way, buy the foods we eat, and our lives wouldn’t mirror the ads around us. In addition to that, we wouldn’t need pop-up blockers, virus protection programs, and firewalls to save us from all this commerce. So ask yourself this, are we really immune to what we see on the TV, hear on the radio, etc? If we really were, we wouldn’t feel the vanity of using these things to get a better self-image to fit in with the way society portrays us to be, which is all the same. It’s kind of a win-win situation at its best, honestly and ironically enough. On the contrary, you are helping yourself out somewhat the same way you are helping out these phony ads. Sure ads can help us out by providing vital information to us consumers, but there is way too much that we are exposed to. Ads can hide the fact of caring for each other, the environment, and the community. Many ads give off a bad message to viewers. Such as smoking meaning you are different in a good way than everyone else, you’re only cool if you drive a pricey car, and also making us think that you have to be mature to drink. These messages can cause conflict in families because they could or can influence the way a person in that family thinks. This could cause friction because of the choices that family member made due to the advertisement. In that case, who’s to blame here? It all depends on the situation. To blame for 90% of it would be the advertisement because it provoked them to make such a decision and the other 10% being lack of poor judgment and self-esteem that was made better by the advertisement. So for all this in mind, why do we really need commercialism anywhere? To pay the bills, to help finances, to help make it an easier, better, more convenient way to make purchases? All it does is cause problems. What does it really help? You’re not really earning anything but helping the advertiser earn your trust and money. So next time you fall for one of these, think of all the consequences that won’t cushion your fall. Whenever you see a pop-up that pops up on your screen, click the x button at the top right, whenever you see any junk email click the delete all button, whenever you hear an ad on the TV, radio, or any electronic device turn it off and read a book not a magazine, instead. You can do many things to avo more

Resolved Question: Question about hotjobs.com. Which option below would you choose and why?

Now, join the decision team at hotjobs.com. Which option would you choose and why? *Option1: Focus on a few major cities or on employment in one industry. - Because the biggest job markets (and potential revenue) are in handful of U.S cities, Dimitri could spend precious advertising dollars selectively by remaining a specialist in technical jobs only or by focusing exclusively on the New York area. But, Hotjob's profits would be limited and vulnerable to local market conditions. Furthermore, online companies were attracting investors, so if Dimitri didn't position Hotjobs as a national player, he might miss his window of opportunity. Well-funded competitors would go national, then return to the local markets and crush Hotjobs. *Option 2: Act local, look national. - By focusing advertising on the country's top seven markets, Dimitri could concentrate his sales force in Hotjobs' regional territories (espacially New York where the national media is strong), hitting each with short blasts of a multimedia and telemarketing campaign. This option would include limited spending on national television advertising, giving Dimitri more bang for his advertising buck while establishing Hotjobs as a premium players. It would also allow messages to be customized to each city. However, a poorly planned and executed advertising message could make Hotjobs seem like a Low-budget, regional player-making larger companies and job seekers reluctant to sign up for a company they perceived as too small. *Option 3: Advertise aggressively to position Hotjobs as a national brand - By coming out fighting on a national level in this new industry, Hotjobs would get a head start by establishing itself as a leader in the business for years to come. But, Hotjobs' main competitor Monster.com was better funded and already had an established public image. With much less money to invest, Dimitri could end up with no brand image while exhausting his limited advertising dollars. Thank you for your time :) more

Resolved Question: Didn't candidate Obama promise "Special Interest Groups would have NO influence in HIS Administration?

So WTH do you call this? (be sure to read to end) By MATTHEW KAMINSKI Oakland, Calif. Flexing his influence, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President Andy Stern turned up at the White House 22 times in the first six months of the Obama administration, more than anyone else on the visitor logs released last month. But the good vibes in Washington contrast with the troubles inside the house of labor itself. Unions are competing for shrinking turf and members, and the most ferocious intramural battle today involves Mr. Stern's union here in California. For the past 10 months, the SEIU has fought to hold on to 150,000 members in its Union of Healthcare Workers affiliate, or UHW. The challenge comes from a group of former UHW leaders and Stern confidantes. Pushed out by Mr. Stern after a prolonged power struggle, they started a rival outfit, the National Union of Healthcare Workers, or NUHW, in January and immediately moved to build it up by wooing away members from the SEIU's local, UHW. Now these upstarts charge that the UHW threatened workers with deportation and tampered with secret ballots to narrowly win a pivotal election last summer in Fresno, Calif. The NUHW allegations, contained in a complaint filed last Friday and previously not made public, take the battle to a new level. The June vote was in a "decertification" election—in which some 10,000 home-care workers were asked to choose between the UHW that already represented them or the NUHW. Old labor hands say they've never seen a decertification vote like this. The SEIU shipped in 950 or so staff and spent an estimated $10 million on mailings, advertising, phone banks, door-to-door canvassing and the like. The NUHW doesn't have this kind of firepower. At a rally for staff in late May, David Regan, an SEIU executive vice president who took over the UHW in January, roared that, "We gotta give a butt-whipping they will never forget." When the secret ballots were mailed in and counted, the SEIU won that vote by a sliver, 2,938 to 2,705. The NUHW immediately called for a re-run of the election, challenging voting irregularities. The two unions have traded accusations since. But now, Carlos Martinez, an immigrant from El Salvador who was on the SEIU's staff during the campaign, has come forward—so he says—to blow the whistle on his employer. Mr. Martinez went door-to-door canvassing the home-care workers during the 15-day election. Like him, many of them are native Spanish speakers; some are illiterate. Speaking in an interview over a sandwich at a hotel in the Bay Area late last month, Mr. Martinez says he was instructed by superiors to tell the workers that if they voted against the SEIU, they could lose their medical benefits, see their green cards or citizenship revoked and possibly be deported. He says he and other staffers were also told to pressure voters to spoil ballots that had been filled out for the NUHW. In other instances he filled ballots out for them. He says he even took some to the post office, as did other SEIU campaign workers! http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203946904574300411938459486.html?mod=rss_Today's_Most_Popular more

Resolved Question: 1. What have been the key success factors for Sony?

Sony Started as a radio repair shop, founded by Masuru Ikura and Akio Morita after Would War II. The company began its long history of producing compact consumer electronics in 1957, when it introduced the World’s first pocket-sized all-transistor radio. The company’s name, Sony, was taken from Sony, the Latin word for “sound” Sony went on to invest a series of transistor-based TVs and increasingly smaller audiocassette recorders. In 1979, the Sony Walkman introduced the World to a new, portable way of listening to music. Sony became a world leader in consumer electronics and was the first Japanese company to have its shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. In the late 1980s, Sony began expanding into media, purchasing a U.S. record company (CSB records for $22 billion in 1988). And a major Hollywood studio (Columbia Pictures for $4.9 billion in 1989). The purchases made Sony a major force in the entertainment industry. The importance of marketing at Sony started with Akio Morita, who said that for a company to be successful, it must have three kinds of creativity: creativity to make inventions, creativity in planning and production, and creativity in marketing. Creativity in marketing at Sony means not just cleaver ads, but deep insight into its customers. For example, Sony knows its playstation customers like to find clues and to decode things. So Sony’s ads for playstation 2, like “Signs,” feature a young man walking the streets of a city where he encounters various signs foreshadowing the events. Mannequins appear in a store window, arms outstretched, and point enigmatically to something that’s about to happen. “The lead character is almost in the midst of his own role-playing game. He needs to follows clues to save the heroine”, said Andrew House, Sony’s executive vice president of marketing. In the ads, “we were essentially trying to tap into a range of emotions that we think we deliver in the games – intrigue, forebonding, excitement, panic, relief and achievement at the end”. Sony’s marketing also includes careful measurement of each campaign’s effectiveness. Foe example, Sony runs 30-second commercials for its Playstation as part of the previews in more than 1,800 theatres and on 8,000 movie screens. The ads appear before such films as “The Cat in the Hat”. Sony Computer Entertainment America has been running movie ads for six years.” Cinema advertising has been very effective for us”, said Amil Blaire, director of product marketing.” The reason why we have committed to cinema every year is the tremendous unaided recall shown by our own research and communicus – commissioned ad tracking”. Another example of measurement is Sony’s GenY youth marketing efforts. “The online program promoting the NetMD ATRAC CD Walkman and Cybershot U30 ran July 1 through September 30, 2003, and we found that more than 70 percent static banners”, said Serge Del Grosso, Director of Media and Internet Strategy, Sony Electronics”. In fact, Sony has even developed a direct-marketing solution which it sells to other companies who want to measure marketing effectiveness. The product, called eBridge[TM], allows marketers to use video, measure the effectiveness of the campaign, and gain insight into the target audience, all in one package. Sony expects that the next big breakthrough will not come from a single new electronic device.Rather, Sony President Kunitake Ando says that the future lies in making a whole range of devices more usefully linking them in a networked home-entertainment system. The company believes that its clout in consumer electronics, combined with its media content, will allow it to steer that convergence in a way that suits it. Whether the future of convergence resides in TV’s or PC’s or devices , $62-billion Sony makes every one of them- with a strong brand name that gives them an extra push off retail shelves around the world. 1. What have been the key success factors for Sony? 2. What recommendations would you make to senior marketing executives going forward? What should they he sure to do with its marketing? more

Voting Question: Could you look through my writing and correct my grammatical mistakes? part 2?

Hi:) Could you look through my writing and correct my grammaticall mistakes? It is a part of my coursework. Thank you very much for your help! "All of businesses that want to benefit for international presence must be aware that some government regulations and policies are possibly different. Law in England and will vary and business that is expanding should have good knowledge about low under which they are going to operate in the future. Lack of knowledge could cause serious and expensive problems in the future. Form my own experience, I know that USA’s law and regulations are different form those in the European Union. For example, three years ago when I was looking for a laptop with high specification, I realized that it is much cheaper to buy a laptop from one of the biggest online retailer which was located in USA. If you buy a product from outside the Europium Union particular product is shipped to you and you have to remember about additional costs, such as: taxes which depend on what US state the seller is in. The selling price which was stated on the webpage was very attractive and unfortunate it didn’t include additional costs. Finally, when I nearly purchased the laptop I discovered that I needed to spend some extra money on tax purposes. Each business which operates internationally must remember that a potential customer may feel cheated if he or she will find out after purchasing that it is necessary to add $150 to selling price of $500 for tax purposes and shipping purposes. All businesses which distribute their products to audience in different countries should remember to inform them about additional costs. The business which wants to expand also should be aware that some foreign languages are completely different, for example Arabic is read form right to left. Some advertising slogan could be difficult to translate. Even when it can be translated it could be difficult to understand for foreigners and the advert will be not as effectible as it was on home market. There are many examples of translations that went disastrously wrong. For example, when translated into Chinese, the KFC slogan "finger-lickin' good" came out as "eat your fingers off". In some countries, some types of adverts are not allowed to be shown in public and as I mentioned before is this task some adverts can by taken as offensive because of cultural differences, different priorities in life or different sense of humour. The owner of the business that want to expand and operate in different countries must have specific knowledge about foreign culture and markets because a cultural difference can have a big impact on the way how business is operating, A lack of knowledge can be expensive and can cause many future problems. In different countries there may be some restrictions on what can be shown and what cannot. The owner of the business must make sure that he or she has a good knowledge about the culture and the market where the new business will be operating and run the marketing campaign."No, it wouldn't that be cheating. I wrote everything in by myself and i just need to correct my errors :( more

Resolved Question: L.E.I Taylor Swift yellow sundress and cowboy boots?

so in February, Taylor launched these really nice, cheap sundresses for Walmart by L.E.I...but every time i go to a store, they either have like 3 (ugly) dresses left, or none at all. does anyone know if they are still making these dresses, have discontinued them, or they have just sold out?? I looked online on Walmart.com, but the yellow dress that i want isn't there. It's not even on the L.E.I website!!! Help please!!!!!!!! Also, there are these really cute cowboy boots that are in Taylor's advertising campaigns for the dresses; you can see them on the L.E.I website (i will put all links in the bottom)...but they are not on the walmart website, or in stores!! where can i get these boots??? wow, walmart is sooo frustrating!!!!!! thanks for your help!!! xx (dress i want) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3492/3240293891_4befdbc6f8.jpg http://thebeautystop.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/taylor_swift_for_walmart_dresses_2.jpg (boots) http://www.leijeans.com/ (click "get the looks" then on the pic of boots) more

Resolved Question: What is the best MMO (outside of WoW and GW)? (Plz click to find out what I'm looking for)?

Hi! I'm looking for another MMO to play. I've played WoW but it costs too much to maintain every month for my currently limited budget. So I've resorted to playing Guild Wars for the past year, but I think I need a break from it. Plus, it's frustrating waiting for Guild Wars 2. I've had some really bad experiences with other games, so I'm skeptical about trying other advertised games UNLESS I get a good review of them. The potential MMO must have the following: -- Missions and Quests (primary reason I play any RPG-- video or table top-- is for the quests) -- Campaign storyline (preferred -- I'm aware this is rare in MMOs) -- Henchmen! (Not required, but this would be a VERY BIG PLUS. I'm aware that this may not exist in other MMOs. But henchies in any RPG are good for cannon fodder esp. when you need to save yourself and other players. I tend to command my henchies to run into monsters and distract them while myself and the other players sneak by). -- Awesome special effects (esp. during battle) -- Decent graphics (Anime graphics perferred... for a change) -- Must have an incentive for monster grinding (REQUIRED -- going up levels and getting cool items isn't enough for me). In GW, my character gets reputation points, which leads to titles and special abilities that come in handy for my elementalist character. In WoW, I tended to go on dungeon crawls with online friends and the socializing kept me from getting bored with killing monsters. Plus, it was very easy for me to find friendly people while on the WoW trial. Games I've played so far: --Ragnarok Online: This game is nothing more than a glorified chat line. It also had too many botters and people who would use special bombs to clear out dungeons WHILE OTHER PLAYERS WERE DUNGEON CRAWLING. When I complained to the GMs, they did nothing about the problem. Plus, there were only quests to gets special hats for your character to wear. -- Maple Story: Cute game, but too many tweens who call other gamers N00B for no reason. Where I come from N00B is slang for baka, stupid, and idiot. Plus I've been booted from guilds for no reason and no explanation (even though I logged on once a day). Plus, there are only collection quests (like Ragnarok) and killing monsters without any incentive got really boring. -- Runescape: This is a poor man's Guild Wars POSER. Just pay the one time fee of $30 for GW Prophecies and get the real thing! Plus alot of Maplestory people often play this game. -- Dungeons and Dragons Online: Anything created by the Turbine company means you have to be a rich gamer and maintain a $3000 gaming comp with a gigantic hard drive space to play without tech problems. I know. I've played this. Plus, somebody please kill that stupid narrator! And the players are rude too! I need to point out that neither WoW nor GW has such crazy computer requirements and those 2 are standard in the MMO world! -- Lord of the Rings Online: Another game from Turbine. Requires expensive gaming comp to play. -- Silkroad Online: Great game with awesome graphics EXCEPT that the servers are constantly full so I can't log on. Plus, the quests are too bland and uninteresting. IMO, I think the programmers need to learn how to write more engaging fantasy stories. They really need to study the Star Wars Ep. 4's script to learn how to write a basic hero story structure. Once you learn the basics, then you can do your own variations. So that's about it. In your opinion, what MMO should I check out? If you need to know my computer specs please check out http://www.xfire.com/profile/sliderkta/ more

Resolved Question: Can someone translate this into German? (150 words-ish) (10 points for first answer)?

Please do not enter it into one of those online translation things. They are TERRIBLE. Okay here it is. I believe that TV is a wonderful pastime but I think that particularly young people spent too much time watching TV. I spend two hours infront of the TV everyday. I watch TV because friends talk about television a lot and because I want to relax. I have a TV in my room and I have ninety-nine channels. I think that almost every house in Scotland has a television. Realityshows are becoming more and more vulgar and considering the daily routine of TV bloodbaths, violence among teenagers doesn't come as a surprise to me. Advertising campaigns win new customers for new products and create new jobs. Advertising is not manipulation but a free choice and you don't have to watch adverts; you can switch over. All in all, I think families should spend more time speaking than staring at the TV but is there anything more relaxing than making yourself comfortable un front of the TV with a cup of coffee?Honestly, please don't joke :( more

Their 'chores' will include feeding turtles, watching whales and collecting the post. He or she will not need qualifications. although they will have to be a good swimmer, and enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving. Eleven potential candidates will be picked and flown out for interviews, with the final choice being made on May 6. Voting Question: Any 4th Edition D&D DM's open for an online Campaign?

Very recently we have been heavily advertising a new gaming group looking for a Dungeon Master on the Official Wizards of the Coast forums. Nobody has bitten, so I'm trying again here. The game is being run in a program called Fantasy Grounds (which you would have to buy). It will be running on Friday nights (Time TBD), and so far we have a party of about 6 experianced players. All we need is a DM and we're good to go (other then buying the program). If you do not have the program, we are signing up for a group discount, so it will be cheaper to do it then. Any issues or questions, feel free to answer the question, contact me here, or petition to join the group at: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/DNDOrdar/ Thank you very much! Hope to hear from you soon! :DThe reason we choose 4th edition is because it is the most widely supported by Wizards of the Coast right now, and although it is not 'complete', we feel it delivers the experiance we are looking for :) more

Resolved Question: Does this sound okay? 10 pts?

We had to come up with a product for class and I came up with walk wear which is basically a hoodie with speakers in it so you can listen to music Does my body paragraphs and conclusion sound alright and if can you please let me know if I should make any changes. Thanks The average cost for a television commercial is about $200,000 for one 30-second commercial during prime time. The magazine ads are $1,200 to $5,000 per month or per issue depending on the ad size and demographics. Online ads are $0.60 pay-per-click or $1,200 - $1,800 a month for aggressive campaigns, although it does not include search engine optimization. Banner ads on websites can cost $200 to $1,200 per year and per banner. Websites cost $150 annually for domain and hosting, plus what you determine your budget to be for design and maintenance. A reasonable bottom line budget for an author without a large body of work for a basic site is about $500. Each of these advertising approaches will make a great impact on the consumer while convincing them to buy our product. Television commercials, magazines ads, online ads, and celebrity endorsement, are most favorable and popular today by society and will also help promote the merchandise. The target audience is anyone who enjoys listening to music. The cost effectiveness of the product is reasonably priced and well worth every penny. Also, the redundancy capabilities can be modernize and altered for future representation. Consequently, in order to sell the product Walk- Wear we will use a variety of different and alluring forms of media to capture the consumer. Television commercials, magazines ads, online ads, along with celebrity endorsements will help promote our product while making a new fashion trend.  more

Resolved Question: Read this!! Want to be taxed for each mile you drive?

The following is an article from newsobserver.com. If you don't want to read the whole thing, it basically says that they are playing with the idea of taxing everyone for each mile they drive because more and more people will be turning to fuel efficient cars and not buying as much gas and they will be loosing the gas tax money. What do you think of this? ================================== Bruce Siceloff, Staff Writer Comment on this story Two hundred Triangle drivers will be recruited this fall to road-test a satellite-technology system that might be used one day to collect highway taxes on every mile we drive -- replacing the gas tax on every gallon we buy. Computers mounted in volunteers' cars will use global positioning system tracking to count the miles -- even across state lines. Participants will receive make-believe state and federal tax bills for their miles. For their time and their opinions, they'll be paid $895 in real money. The $16.5 million Road User Charge Study will enlist drivers in six states to determine whether the technology works, and whether Americans would accept a new mileage tax. Volunteers will be asked how they feel about technology that collects information about their driving. The federal government and 15 states, including North Carolina, are paying for the study to find a fair, reliable revenue source that can keep pace with growing transportation needs. "The gas tax is not going to be a viable way of funding our highways in the future," Jon Kuhl, a University of Iowa professor who is directing the study, said in an interview. "The national Highway Trust Fund is already going broke, and the situation is going to get worse." Gas tax collections are slowing as cars get more miles on each gallon, and as $4 pump prices force Americans to reduce their driving. A few years from now, many Americans might be driving plug-in electric and fuel-cell cars that don't use gas at all. Michael Walden, an economist at N.C. State University, said the study will help Americans answer hard questions about how to pay for the nation's transportation infrastructure. He agreed with Kuhl that the nation needs to find a replacement for the gas tax. "Perhaps a better way in terms of assessing someone's use of the roads is not how many gallons they use but how many miles they actually drive," said Walden, who is not involved in the study. "A mileage tax could be adjusted over time, as the cost of road construction goes up." With the $895 bounty and an advertising campaign that will start next week, Kuhl and his team hope to enlist a diverse mix of car owners from the six-county Triangle area. Details are available by phone at 866-363-1975 (toll-free) or online at www.roaduserstudy.org. After the participants are chosen and trained, their cars will be outfitted with GPS computers -- the satellite technology that drives popular dashboard navigation gadgets. Over eight months, starting in December, the car's computer will record the number of miles driven in each state, then upload the information to a central billing system. Make-believe taxes Cars will have make-believe per-mile tax rates based on their EPA-estimated fuel economy. The tax rates are intended to generate about the same taxes on miles that the car pays in taxes on gallons of gas. The mileage tax would be higher for a heavy truck that burns a lot of gas, and lower for a fuel-thrifty hybrid. A typical car rated at 24 miles per gallon will have a make-believe federal tax rate of 0.8 cents per mile, plus 1.3 cents per mile for the North Carolina tax, Kuhl said. For 24 miles, that's 31.2 cents state and 19.2 cents federal tax -- about a penny more than the current taxes on a gallon. If the technology works, it could give federal, state and even local governments the option to set different tax rates for different vehicles. Volunteers also will test of public attitudes about a new type of tax -- and about technology that gathers information about where people drive. "Privacy is a hot-button issue," Kuhl said. "People rightly have a knee-jerk reaction about being tracked." The system will only count the number of miles driven each month in a given state, he said. "There's no way these units could be used to track people or determine they were in a particular place at a particular time," Kuhl said. Some drivers will worry about government snooping, Walden said, and that could make it even harder to sell the idea of a new tax. "I don't know if the mileage tax is going to be any better accepted than the gas tax, but I know we have a problem finding money for our roads," Walden said. bruce.siceloff@newsobserver.com or 919-829-4527 http://www.newsobserver.com/news/growth/traffic/story/1245637.html more

What was the coupon? the 555 deal..... that's not a coupon!!!! its misleading just to get me to sign up, what the hell kind of marketing is that. -they also attach "555 deal coupons to the pizza boxes upon delivery, ridiculous. The "30 minute pizza tracker" - Advertised both online and TV. "you've got pizza tracker!!" they say... "no longer than 30 min, use our online pizza tracker". Ok, sounds good, so I use the tracker, 40 minutes go by, ok.. so I call. They tell me yeah sorry were running late, I said ok well what do I get, my "pizza tracker" is at 40 min. "nothing, that's just a timer" was the responce. Laugh My Ass Off! frickin ridiculous, an elementary student could come up with a more wholesome marketing strategy.. anyone else agree? sorry for the rant =) more

Resolved Question: How many impressions do I need to get a good rate of return for an online ad campaign?

I'm thinking of advertising online with various newspaper publications. The purpose of the ads will be to drive traffic to my website where the customer can purchase various health, fitness, and beauty related products. In a separate ad, I'll advertise a business opportunity for which customers will also be driven to a website. Many of the newspapers have sections for these types of offerings whether in the general classifieds or display ads in their lifestyle magazines. I want to reach enough interested customers to get a good rate of return. Is asking for a 2% - 5% rate of return asking too much or too little? What would be a good target number of impressions to purchase to get this rate of return? Please give me good info and if you have supporting information from the internet, please provide it. The best answer will receive 10 points.  more
