Resolved Question: being 18 and needing to decide on a career?

Im an 18 year old college student planning on majoring in advertising/mass communications. The only thing is that I don't feel the corporate business type setting is for me. I Have lots of tattoos, and most of the men in my family are blue collard workers (painting cars, houses and building stuff). I don't want to do blue collard work tho, i want something different. I decided to either go into non profit work (something that i actually care about), in a advertising agency or just be at the hard rock hotel -_-, I'm also looking into fire fighting, my uncle is Miami dades fire chief...so ye more

Resolved Question: Why this strictly-enforced social stereotype for parents?...?

Sorry that this is so long, but just bear with me, please...besides, this is my second Q here on Y!A since I joined last month...and I'm having a great time so far! Anyway, it seems that in every hospital nowadays, after your child is born, you have 24 -48 hours to (a)name the kid AND (b)get it a Social Security card, or else you CAN'T leave the hospital...plus, the rule also applies when you are discharged, and the staff in the nursery finds out you DON'T own a Chrysler minivan(whether Dodge Caravan, Chrysler Town and Country, or the late Plymouth Voyager)...you are banned from leaving unless you go out and rent the darn van, just to make them happy(the STUPID idiots!)...keeping Chrysler loyalty to a new level is just ridiculous! Also, when you make the official announcement of the upcoming birth(or the baby's homecoming, well-meaning neighbors(yeah, right!), sneak into your house and paint the baby's room the socially-appropriate colors(you know, "Miami-Dade County Blue[actually bright turquoise!] for the boy, or Miami-Dade PINK[yecch!] for the girl, plus the matching gender-appropriate decals on the walls, like footballs, baseballs, and firetrucks(boys) or flowers, pictures of puppies(hello, I HATE pit bulls--except for Rachael Ray's beloved Isaboo!), and pictures of MILEY CYRUS[yecch!])... Why must these sterreotypes be continuously enforced?...is it just to make the advertising agencies, Chrysler workers and sales associates(and hospital nursery staffers) happy?...or what? When our kids(Redondo, now 12 1/2 and Marina, now 10 1/2) were born, the nursery staff refused to let us leave the hospital in our '85 Chevy Sprint minicar unless we rented a Chrysler Town and Country minivan from the dealer down the street...as for the "neighbors-from-hell", they actually did those awful deeds I described earlier...and I had to repaint the rooms back to MY colors(basic white and NO decals on the walls!)... The neighbors came over two weeks later and made sure we "toed the line" re: the kids, but were truly upset at the "re-modeling of the rooms", and vowed to make our lives as new parents miserable...especially when we had the windows open during the summer heat waves in their first year of life, when they got a heavy dose of VAN HALEN instead of lullabies!...take THAT, Ben Spock! I like being a "rebel" parent as some of you have proudly labeled me(thanks!), but the pressure to conform by "well-meaning" folks in the pediatric advertising community is going too far, IMO! Your thoughts? P.S.: too bad I can't also classify this under "Society and Culture"...sigh...Sorry to posters 1 and 3, but I tell the truth the way it is, and besides, I have NOTHING against Chrysler products, it's just that in our neighborhood near Hemet(CA), you're not a "soccer-mom-to-be-in 15-years" unless you have a Caravan/Voyager/T & C...crazy, eh? more

Resolved Question: How to land a job in an Advertising Agency??

I live in Miami and I've sent a lot of resumes and I've called the agencies to send in my resume and they always tell me to email it. I never get an answer. I don't know where else to look for an Advertising job. I don't have any experience (except for a 6 month internship at a bad ad agency) but I really want to start my career. I don't know what the next step should be.... I don't know if there's something wrong with my resume or cover letter. more
