Business Change: Using The Quad A Model As An Efficient Way To Getting Middle Managers To Support Change Initiatives

Middle management excels in issues pertaining to run the business. They focus their efforts on keeping employees on the straight and narrow. They maintain adherence with protocols. They work to keep stability in the workplace. Business change is hard on middle managers because the balance of the work environment is disturbed. Getting middle managers on board with change is very important. One approach to this, named Quad A, can help to accomplish this task.

Quad A is a four step process of assessment, analysis, affirmation, and authorization. Managers that go through these steps are far more likely to get behind the business change. The assessment step is actually a two stage process. This first part is focused on addressing the issue of middle managers pushing against change. This can be done by helping the managers develop a comprehension of the change initiative. Then the business case needs to be presented to them. An assessment of the affected responsibility areas is the next step. Finally, they need to identify the issues that must be resolved before an analysis of the change can be made.

When the struggle against change has been surmounted, the second phase of assessment can begin. At this point, all reasonable objections to the business change made by the middle managers should be noted. The purpose of this is to understand the concerns so that solutions can be created. The flip side is that there is an expectation that the managers will line up behind the change and participate in solution development for the noted objections.
